Psalms 36

Man’s Wickedness and God’s Perfections
To the Chief Musician. A Psalm of David the servant of the Lord.
1An oracle within my heart concerning the transgression of the wicked:
#Rom. 3:18There is no fear of God before his eyes.
2For he flatters himself in his own eyes,
When he finds out his iniquity and when he hates.
3The words of his mouth are wickedness and deceit;
#Ps. 94:8; Jer. 4:22He has ceased to be wise and to do good.
4#Prov. 4:16; (Mic. 2:1)He devises wickedness on his bed;
He sets himself #Is. 65:2in a way that is not good;
He does not abhor #(Ps. 52:3; Rom. 12:9)evil.
5Your mercy, O Lord, is in the heavens;
Your faithfulness reaches to the clouds.
6Your righteousness is like the great mountains;
#Job 11:8; Ps. 77:19; (Rom. 11:33)Your judgments are a great deep;
O Lord, You preserve man and beast.
7How precious is Your lovingkindness, O God!
Therefore the children of men #Ruth 2:12; Ps. 17:8; 57:1; 91:4put their trust under the shadow of Your wings.
8#Ps. 63:5; 65:4; Is. 25:6; Jer. 31:12–14They are abundantly satisfied with the fullness of Your house,
And You give them drink from #Ps. 46:4; Rev. 22:1the river of Your pleasures.
9#(Jer. 2:13; John 4:10, 14)For with You is the fountain of life;
#(1 Pet. 2:9)In Your light we see light.
10Oh, continue Your lovingkindness to those who know You,
And Your righteousness to the upright in heart.
11Let not the foot of pride come against me,
And let not the hand of the wicked drive me away.
12There the workers of iniquity have fallen;
They have been cast down and are not able to rise.

1For the leader. By David, the servant of Adonai:
2Crime speaks to the wicked.
I perceive this in my heart;
before his eyes there is no fear
of God.
3For, the way he sees it,
crime makes his life easy —
that is, until his wrongs are discovered;
then, he is hated.
4His words are wrong and deceitful;
he has stopped being wise and doing good.
5He devises trouble as he lies in bed;
so set is he on his own bad way
that he doesn’t hate evil.
6Adonai, in the heavens is your grace;
your faithfulness reaches to the skies.
7Your righteousness is like the mountains of God,
your judgments are like the great deep.
You save man and beast, Adonai.
8How precious, God, is your grace!
People take refuge in the shadow of your wings,
9they feast on the rich bounty of your house,
and you have them drink from the stream of your delights.
10For with you is the fountain of life;
in your light we see light.
11Continue your grace to those who know you
and your righteousness to the upright in heart.
12Don’t let the foot of the proud tread on me
or the hands of the wicked drive me away.
13There they lie fallen, those evildoers,
flung down and unable to rise.
