Proverbs 5

The Peril of Adultery
1My son, pay attention to my wisdom;
Lend your ear to my understanding,
2That you may preserve discretion,
And your lips #Mal. 2:7may keep knowledge.
3#Prov. 2:16For the lips of an immoral woman drip honey,
And her mouth is #Ps. 55:21smoother than oil;
4But in the end she is bitter as wormwood,
Sharp as a two-edged sword.
5Her feet go down to death,
#Prov. 7:27Her steps lay hold of hell.
6Lest you ponder her path of life—
Her ways are unstable;
You do not know them.
7Therefore hear me now, my children,
And do not depart from the words of my mouth.
8Remove your way far from her,
And do not go near the door of her house,
9Lest you give your honor to others,
And your years to the cruel one;
10Lest aliens be filled with your wealth,
And your labors go to the house of a foreigner;
11And you mourn at last,
When your flesh and your body are consumed,
12And say:
“How I have hated instruction,
And my heart despised correction!
13I have not obeyed the voice of my teachers,
Nor inclined my ear to those who instructed me!
14I was on the verge of total ruin,
In the midst of the assembly and congregation.”
15Drink water from your own cistern,
And running water from your own well.
16Should your fountains be dispersed abroad,
Streams of water in the streets?
17Let them be only your own,
And not for strangers with you.
18Let your fountain be blessed,
And rejoice with #Deut. 24:5; Eccl. 9:9; Mal. 2:14the wife of your youth.
19#Song 2:9As a loving deer and a graceful doe,
Let her breasts satisfy you at all times;
And always be enraptured with her love.
20For why should you, my son, be enraptured by #Prov. 2:16an immoral woman,
And be embraced in the arms of a seductress?
21#2 Chr. 16:9; Job 31:4; 34:21; Prov. 15:3; Jer. 16:17; 32:19; Hos. 7:2; Heb. 4:13For the ways of man are before the eyes of the Lord,
And He ponders all his paths.
22#Num. 32:23; Ps. 9:5; Prov. 1:31; Is. 3:11His own iniquities entrap the wicked man,
And he is caught in the cords of his sin.
23#Job 4:21He shall die for lack of instruction,
And in the greatness of his folly he shall go astray.

Proverbs 5
5
1 My son, pay attention to my wisdom.
Turn your ear to my understanding,
2 that you may maintain discretion,
that your lips may preserve knowledge.
3 For the lips of an adulteress drip honey.
Her mouth is smoother than oil,
4but in the end she is as bitter as wormwood,
and as sharp as a two-edged sword.
5 Her feet go down to death.
Her steps lead straight to Sheol.#5:5 Sheol is the place of the dead.
6 She gives no thought to the way of life.
Her ways are crooked, and she doesn’t know it.
7 Now therefore, my sons, listen to me.
Don’t depart from the words of my mouth.
8 Remove your way far from her.
Don’t come near the door of her house,
9 lest you give your honour to others,
and your years to the cruel one;
10 lest strangers feast on your wealth,
and your labours enrich another man’s house.
11 You will groan at your latter end,
when your flesh and your body are consumed,
12 and say, “How I have hated instruction,
and my heart despised reproof.
13 I haven’t obeyed the voice of my teachers,
nor turned my ear to those who instructed me!
14 I have come to the brink of utter ruin,
amongst the gathered assembly.”
15 Drink water out of your own cistern,
running water out of your own well.
16Should your springs overflow in the streets,
streams of water in the public squares?
17 Let them be for yourself alone,
not for strangers with you.
18 Let your spring be blessed.
Rejoice in the wife of your youth.
19 A loving doe and a graceful deer—
let her breasts satisfy you at all times.
Be captivated always with her love.
20 For why should you, my son, be captivated with an adulteress?
Why embrace the bosom of another?
21 For the ways of man are before the LORD’s eyes.
He examines all his paths.
22 The evil deeds of the wicked ensnare him.
The cords of his sin hold him firmly.
23 He will die for lack of instruction.
In the greatness of his folly, he will go astray.
