Proverbs 29
29
1He#2 Chr. 36:16; Prov. 6:15 who is often rebuked, and hardens his neck,
Will suddenly be destroyed, and that without remedy.
2When the righteous are in authority, the #Esth. 8:15; Prov. 28:12people rejoice;
But when a wicked man rules, #Esth. 4:3the people groan.
3Whoever loves wisdom makes his father rejoice,
But a companion of harlots wastes his wealth.
4The king establishes the land by justice,
But he who receives bribes overthrows it.
5A man who #Prov. 26:28flatters his neighbor
Spreads a net for his feet.
6By transgression an evil man is snared,
But the righteous sings and rejoices.
7The righteous #Job 29:16; Ps. 41:1; Prov. 31:8, 9considers the cause of the poor,
But the wicked does not understand such knowledge.
8Scoffers #Prov. 11:11set a city aflame,
But wise men turn away wrath.
9If a wise man contends with a foolish man,
#Matt. 11:17Whether the fool rages or laughs, there is no peace.
10#Gen. 4:5–8; 1 John 3:12The bloodthirsty hate the blameless,
But the upright seek his well-being.
11A fool vents all his #Prov. 14:33feelings,
But a wise man holds them back.
12If a ruler pays attention to lies,
All his servants become wicked.
13The poor man and the oppressor have this in common:
#(Matt. 5:45)The Lord gives light to the eyes of both.
14The king who judges the #Ps. 72:4; Is. 11:4poor with truth,
His throne will be established forever.
15The rod and rebuke give #Prov. 22:15wisdom,
But a child left to himself brings shame to his mother.
16When the wicked are multiplied, transgression increases;
But the righteous will see their #Ps. 37:34; Prov. 21:12fall.
17Correct your son, and he will give you rest;
Yes, he will give delight to your soul.
18#1 Sam. 3:1; Ps. 74:9; Amos 8:11, 12Where there is no revelation, the people cast off restraint;
But #Prov. 8:32; John 13:17happy is he who keeps the law.
19A servant will not be corrected by mere words;
For though he understands, he will not respond.
20Do you see a man hasty in his words?

21He who pampers his servant from childhood
Will have him as a son in the end.
22#Prov. 26:21An angry man stirs up strife,
And a furious man abounds in transgression.

But whoever trusts in the Lord shall be safe.

And he who is upright in the way is an abomination to the wicked.

1One who becomes stiff-necked,
after many reprimands
will be shattered instantly —

2When the righteous flourish, the people rejoice,

3A man who loves wisdom brings joy to his father,#Pr 10:1; 15:20; 23:24–25; 27:11; 28:7
but one who consorts with prostitutes destroys his wealth.#Pr 5:9–10; 6:26; Lk 15:13,30
4By justice a king brings stability to a land,#2Ch 9:8; Pr 29:14
but a person who demands “contributions”#29:4 The Hb word for contributions usually refers to offerings in worship.

5A person who flatters his neighbor

6An evil person is caught by sin,#Pr 12:13; 18:7; Ec 9:12
but the righteous one sings and rejoices.#Ex 15:1

but the wicked one does not understand these concerns.
8Mockers inflame a city,#Pr 11:11; 26:21; 29:22
but the wise turn away anger.
9If a wise person goes to court with a fool,

10Bloodthirsty men hate an honest person,#Gn 4:5–8; 1Jn 3:12

all his officials will be wicked.

14A king who judges the poor with fairness —

16When the wicked increase, rebellion increases,

and give you delight.

19A servant cannot be disciplined by words;

There is more hope for a fool than for him.#Pr 26:12
21A servant pampered from his youth

22An angry person stirs up conflict,

24To be a thief’s partner is to hate oneself;

27An unjust person is detestable to the righteous,
and one whose way is upright
