God’s Wrath on His Enemies
2God is #Ex. 20:5; Josh. 24:19jealous, and the Lord avenges;
The Lord avenges and is furious.
The Lord will take vengeance on His adversaries,
And He reserves wrath for His enemies;
3The Lord is #Ex. 34:6, 7; Neh. 9:17; Ps. 103:8slow to anger and #(Job 9:4)great in power,
And will not at all acquit the wicked.
#Ps. 18:17The Lord has His way
In the whirlwind and in the storm,
And the clouds are the dust of His feet.
4#Josh. 3:15, 16; Ps. 106:9; Is. 50:2; Matt. 8:26He rebukes the sea and makes it dry,
And dries up all the rivers.
#Is. 33:9Bashan and Carmel wither,
And the flower of Lebanon wilts.
5The mountains quake before Him,
The hills melt,
And the earth heaves at His presence,
Yes, the world and all who dwell in it.
6Who can stand before His indignation?
And #Jer. 10:10; (Mal. 3:2)who can endure the fierceness of His anger?
His fury is poured out like fire,
And the rocks are thrown down by Him.
7#Ps. 25:8; 37:39, 40; 100:5; (Jer. 33:11); Lam. 3:25The Lord is good,
A stronghold in the day of trouble;
And #Ps. 1:6; John 10:14; 2 Tim. 2:19He knows those who trust in Him.
8But with an overflowing flood
He will make an utter end of its place,
And darkness will pursue His enemies.
9#Ps. 2:1; Nah. 1:11What do you conspire against the Lord?
#1 Sam. 3:12He will make an utter end of it.
Affliction will not rise up a second time.
10For while tangled #2 Sam. 23:6; Mic. 7:4like thorns,
#Is. 56:12; Nah. 3:11And while drunken like drunkards,
#Is. 5:24; 10:17; Mal. 4:1They shall be devoured like stubble fully dried.
11From you comes forth one
Who plots evil against the Lord,
A wicked counselor.
12Thus says the Lord:
“Though they are safe, and likewise many,
Yet in this manner they will be #(Is. 10:16–19, 33, 34)cut down
When he passes through.
Though I have afflicted you,
I will afflict you no more;
13For now I will break off his yoke from you,
And burst your bonds apart.”
14The Lord has given a command concerning you:
“Your name shall be perpetuated no longer.
Out of the house of your gods
I will cut off the carved image and the molded image.
I will dig your #Ezek. 32:22, 23grave,
For you are #Nah. 3:6vile.”
15Behold, on the mountains
The #Is. 40:9; 52:7; Rom. 10:15feet of him who brings good tidings,
Who proclaims peace!
O Judah, keep your appointed feasts,
Perform your vows.
For the wicked one shall no more pass through you;
He is #Is. 29:7, 8utterly cut off.

Nahum 1

Is 10.5–34; 14.24–27; Zeph 2.13–15 This is a message about Nineveh, the account of a vision seen by Nahum, who was from Elkosh.
The LORD's Anger against Nineveh
2The LORD God tolerates no rivals;
he punishes those who oppose him.
In his anger he pays them back.
3The LORD does not easily become angry,
but he is powerful
and never lets the guilty go unpunished.
Where the LORD walks, storms arise;
the clouds are the dust raised by his feet!
4He commands the sea, and it dries up!
He makes the rivers go dry.
The fields of Bashan wither,
Mount Carmel turns brown,
and the flowers of Lebanon fade.
5Mountains quake in the presence of the LORD;
hills melt before him.
The earth shakes when the LORD appears;
the world and all its people tremble.
6When he is angry, who can survive?
Who can survive his terrible fury?
He pours out his flaming anger;
rocks crumble to dust before him.
7The LORD is good;
he protects his people in times of trouble;
he takes care of those who turn to him.
8Like a great rushing flood he completely destroys his enemies;#1.8 Some ancient translations his enemies; Hebrew its place.
he sends to their death those who oppose him.
9What are you plotting against the LORD?
He will destroy you.
No one opposes him more than once.
10Like tangled thorns and dry straw,
you drunkards will be burnt up!
11From you, Nineveh, there came someone full of wicked schemes, who plotted against the LORD. 12This is what the LORD says to his people Israel: “Even though the Assyrians are strong and numerous, they will be destroyed and disappear. My people, I made you suffer, but I will not do it again. 13I will now end Assyria's power over you and break the chains that bind you.”
14This is what the LORD has decreed about the Assyrians: “They will have no descendants to carry on their name. I will destroy the idols that are in the temples of their gods. I am preparing a grave for the Assyrians — they don't deserve to live!”

Is 52.7
Look, a messenger is coming over the mountains with good news! He is on his way to announce the victory! People of Judah, celebrate your festivals and give God what you solemnly promised him. The wicked will never invade your land again. They have been totally destroyed!
