The Plot to Kill Jesus
1After #Matt. 26:2–5; Luke 22:1, 2; John 11:55; 13:1two days it was the Passover and #Ex. 12:1–27; Mark 14:12the Feast of Unleavened Bread. And the chief priests and the scribes sought how they might take Him by trickery and put Him to death. 2But they said, “Not during the feast, lest there be an uproar of the people.”
The Anointing at Bethany
3#Matt. 26:6; Luke 7:37; John 12:1, 3And being in Bethany at the house of Simon the leper, as He sat at the table, a woman came having an alabaster flask of very costly oil of spikenard. Then she broke the flask and poured it on His head. 4But there were some who were indignant among themselves, and said, “Why was this fragrant oil wasted? 5For it might have been sold for more than three hundred #Matt. 18:28; Mark 12:15denarii and given to the poor.” And they #Matt. 20:11; John 6:61criticized her sharply.
6But Jesus said, “Let her alone. Why do you trouble her? She has done a good work for Me. 7#Deut. 15:11; Matt. 26:11; John 12:8For you have the poor with you always, and whenever you wish you may do them good; #(John 7:33; 8:21; 14:2, 12; 16:10, 17, 28)but Me you do not have always. 8She has done what she could. She has come beforehand to anoint My body for burial. 9Assuredly, I say to you, wherever this gospel is #Matt. 28:19, 20; Mark 16:15; Luke 24:47preached in the whole world, what this woman has done will also be told as a memorial to her.”
Judas Agrees to Betray Jesus
10#Ps. 41:9; 55:12–14; Matt. 10:2–4Then Judas Iscariot, one of the twelve, went to the chief priests to betray Him to them. 11And when they heard it, they were glad, and promised to give him money. So he sought how he might conveniently betray Him.
Jesus Celebrates the Passover with His Disciples
12#Ex. 12:8; Matt. 26:17–19; Luke 22:7–13Now on the first day of Unleavened Bread, when they killed the Passover lamb, His disciples said to Him, “Where do You want us to go and prepare, that You may eat the Passover?”
13And He sent out two of His disciples and said to them, “Go into the city, and a man will meet you carrying a pitcher of water; follow him. 14Wherever he goes in, say to the master of the house, ‘The Teacher says, “Where is the guest room in which I may eat the Passover with My disciples?” ’ 15Then he will show you a large upper room, furnished and prepared; there make ready for us.”
16So His disciples went out, and came into the city, and found it just as He had said to them; and they prepared the Passover.
17#Matt. 26:20–24; Luke 22:14, 21–23In the evening He came with the twelve. 18Now as they sat and ate, Jesus said, “Assuredly, I say to you, #Ps. 41:9; Matt. 26:46; Mark 14:42; John 6:70, 71; 13:18one of you who eats with Me will betray Me.”
19And they began to be sorrowful, and to say to Him one by one, “Is it I?” And another said, “Is it I?”
20He answered and said to them, “It is one of the twelve, who dips with Me in the dish. 21#Matt. 26:24; Luke 22:22; Acts 1:16–20The Son of Man indeed goes just as it is written of Him, but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would have been good for that man if he had never been born.”
Jesus Institutes the Lord’s Supper
22#Matt. 26:26–29; Luke 22:17–20; 1 Cor. 11:23–25And as they were eating, Jesus took bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to them and said, “Take, eat; this is My #(1 Pet. 2:24)body.”
23Then He took the cup, and when He had given thanks He gave it to them, and they all drank from it. 24And He said to them, “This is My blood of the new covenant, which is shed for many. 25Assuredly, I say to you, I will no longer drink of the fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new in the kingdom of God.”
26#Matt. 26:30And when they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.
Jesus Predicts Peter’s Denial
27#Matt. 26:31–35; Mark 14:50; John 16:32Then Jesus said to them, “All of you will be made to stumble because of Me this night, for it is written:
#(Is. 53:5, 10); Zech. 13:7‘I will strike the Shepherd,
And the sheep will be scattered.’
28“But #Matt. 28:16; Mark 16:7; John 21:1after I have been raised, I will go before you to Galilee.”
29#Matt. 26:33, 34; Luke 22:33, 34; John 13:37, 38Peter said to Him, “Even if all are made to stumble, yet I will not be.”
30Jesus said to him, “Assuredly, I say to you that today, even this night, before the rooster crows twice, you will deny Me three times.”
31But he spoke more vehemently, “If I have to die with You, I will not deny You!”
And they all said likewise.
The Prayer in the Garden
32#Matt. 26:36–46; Luke 22:40–46; John 18:1Then they came to a place which was named Gethsemane; and He said to His disciples, “Sit here while I pray.” 33And He #Mark 5:37; 9:2; 13:3took Peter, James, and John with Him, and He began to be troubled and deeply distressed. 34Then He said to them, #Is. 53:3, 4; Matt. 26:38; John 12:27“My soul is exceedingly sorrowful, even to death. Stay here and watch.”
35He went a little farther, and fell on the ground, and prayed that if it were possible, the hour might pass from Him. 36And He said, #Rom. 8:15; Gal. 4:6“Abba, Father, #(Heb. 5:7)all things are possible for You. Take this cup away from Me; #Is. 50:5; John 5:30; 6:38nevertheless, not what I will, but what You will.”
37Then He came and found them sleeping, and said to Peter, “Simon, are you sleeping? Could you not watch one hour? 38#Luke 21:36Watch and pray, lest you enter into temptation. #(Rom. 7:18, 21–24; Gal. 5:17)The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.”
39Again He went away and prayed, and spoke the same words. 40And when He returned, He found them asleep again, for their eyes were heavy; and they did not know what to answer Him.
41Then He came the third time and said to them, “Are you still sleeping and resting? It is enough! #John 13:1; 17:1The hour has come; behold, the Son of Man is being betrayed into the hands of sinners. 42#Matt. 26:46; Mark 14:18; Luke 9:44; John 13:21; 18:1, 2Rise, let us be going. See, My betrayer is at hand.”
Betrayal and Arrest in Gethsemane
43#Ps. 3:1; Matt. 26:47–56; Luke 22:47–53; John 18:3–11And immediately, while He was still speaking, Judas, one of the twelve, with a great multitude with swords and clubs, came from the chief priests and the scribes and the elders. 44Now His betrayer had given them a signal, saying, “Whomever I #(Prov. 27:6)kiss, He is the One; seize Him and lead Him away safely.”
45As soon as he had come, immediately he went up to Him and said to Him, “Rabbi, Rabbi!” and kissed Him.
46Then they laid their hands on Him and took Him. 47And one of those who stood by drew his sword and struck the servant of the high priest, and cut off his ear.
48#Matt. 26:55; Luke 22:52Then Jesus answered and said to them, “Have you come out, as against a robber, with swords and clubs to take Me? 49I was daily with you in the temple #Matt. 21:23teaching, and you did not seize Me. But #Ps. 22:6; Is. 53:7; Luke 22:37; 24:44the Scriptures must be fulfilled.”
50#Ps. 88:8; Zech. 13:7; Matt. 26:31; Mark 14:27Then they all forsook Him and fled.
A Young Man Flees Naked
51Now a certain young man followed Him, having a linen cloth thrown around his naked body. And the young men laid hold of him, 52and he left the linen cloth and fled from them naked.
Jesus Faces the Sanhedrin
53#Matt. 26:57–68; Mark 10:33; Luke 22:54; John 18:12, 13, 19–24And they led Jesus away to the high priest; and with him were #Mark 15:1assembled all the #Matt. 16:21; 27:12; Luke 9:22; 23:23; John 7:32; 18:3; 19:6chief priests, the elders, and the scribes. 54But #John 18:15Peter followed Him at a distance, right into the courtyard of the high priest. And he sat with the servants and warmed himself at the fire.
55#Matt. 26:59Now the chief priests and all the council sought testimony against Jesus to put Him to death, but found none. 56For many bore #Ex. 20:16; Ps. 27:12; 35:11; Prov. 6:16–19; 19:5false witness against Him, but their testimonies did not agree.
57Then some rose up and bore false witness against Him, saying, 58“We heard Him say, #Matt. 26:61; Mark 15:29; John 2:19; (2 Cor. 5:1)‘I will destroy this temple made with hands, and within three days I will build another made without hands.’ ” 59But not even then did their testimony agree.
60#Matt. 26:62; Mark 15:3–5And the high priest stood up in the midst and asked Jesus, saying, “Do You answer nothing? What is it these men testify against You?” 61But #Is. 53:7; John 19:9; Acts 8:32; (1 Pet. 2:23)He kept silent and answered nothing.
#Matt. 26:63; Luke 22:67–71Again the high priest asked Him, saying to Him, “Are You the Christ, the Son of the Blessed?”
62Jesus said, “I am. #Matt. 24:30; 26:64; Luke 22:69And you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Power, and coming with the clouds of heaven.”
63Then the high priest tore his clothes and said, “What further need do we have of witnesses? 64You have heard the #John 10:33, 36blasphemy! What do you think?”
And they all condemned Him to be deserving of #Matt. 20:18; Mark 10:33; John 19:7death.
65Then some began to #Job 16:10; Is. 50:6; 52:14; Lam. 3:30; Mark 10:34; Luke 18:32spit on Him, and to blindfold Him, and to beat Him, and to say to Him, “Prophesy!” And the officers struck Him with the palms of their hands.
Peter Denies Jesus, and Weeps
66#Matt. 26:58, 69–75; Luke 22:55–62; John 18:16–18, 25–27Now as Peter was below in the courtyard, one of the servant girls of the high priest came. 67And when she saw Peter warming himself, she looked at him and said, “You also were with #Mark 10:47; John 1:45; Acts 10:38Jesus of Nazareth.”
68But he denied it, saying, “I neither know nor understand what you are saying.” And he went out on the porch, and a rooster crowed.
69#Matt. 26:71; Luke 22:58; John 18:25And the servant girl saw him again, and began to say to those who stood by, “This is one of them.” 70But he denied it again.
#Matt. 26:73; Luke 22:59; John 18:26And a little later those who stood by said to Peter again, “Surely you are one of them; #Acts 2:7for you are a Galilean, and your speech shows it.”
71Then he began to curse and swear, “I do not know this Man of whom you speak!”
72#Matt. 26:75; Mark 14:30; Luke 22:34; John 13:38A second time the rooster crowed. Then Peter called to mind the word that Jesus had said to him, “Before the rooster crows twice, you will deny Me three times.” And when he thought about it, he wept.

Mark 14
14
Jesus Anointed at Bethany
1It was now two days before Passover and the Festival of Unleavened Bread. The leading priests and the teachers of religious law were still looking for an opportunity to capture Jesus secretly and kill him. 2“But not during the Passover celebration,” they agreed, “or the people may riot.”
3Meanwhile, Jesus was in Bethany at the home of Simon, a man who had previously had leprosy. While he was eating,#14:3 Or reclining. a woman came in with a beautiful alabaster jar of expensive perfume made from essence of nard. She broke open the jar and poured the perfume over his head.
4Some of those at the table were indignant. “Why waste such expensive perfume?” they asked. 5“It could have been sold for a year’s wages#14:5 Greek for 300 denarii. A denarius was equivalent to a laborer’s full day’s wage. and the money given to the poor!” So they scolded her harshly.
6But Jesus replied, “Leave her alone. Why criticize her for doing such a good thing to me? 7You will always have the poor among you, and you can help them whenever you want to. But you will not always have me. 8She has done what she could and has anointed my body for burial ahead of time. 9I tell you the truth, wherever the Good News is preached throughout the world, this woman’s deed will be remembered and discussed.”
Judas Agrees to Betray Jesus
10Then Judas Iscariot, one of the twelve disciples, went to the leading priests to arrange to betray Jesus to them. 11They were delighted when they heard why he had come, and they promised to give him money. So he began looking for an opportunity to betray Jesus.
The Last Supper
12On the first day of the Festival of Unleavened Bread, when the Passover lamb is sacrificed, Jesus’ disciples asked him, “Where do you want us to go to prepare the Passover meal for you?”
13So Jesus sent two of them into Jerusalem with these instructions: “As you go into the city, a man carrying a pitcher of water will meet you. Follow him. 14At the house he enters, say to the owner, ‘The Teacher asks: Where is the guest room where I can eat the Passover meal with my disciples?’ 15He will take you upstairs to a large room that is already set up. That is where you should prepare our meal.” 16So the two disciples went into the city and found everything just as Jesus had said, and they prepared the Passover meal there.
17In the evening Jesus arrived with the Twelve. 18As they were at the table#14:18 Or As they reclined. eating, Jesus said, “I tell you the truth, one of you eating with me here will betray me.”
19Greatly distressed, each one asked in turn, “Am I the one?”
20He replied, “It is one of you twelve who is eating from this bowl with me. 21For the Son of Man#14:21 “Son of Man” is a title Jesus used for himself. must die, as the Scriptures declared long ago. But how terrible it will be for the one who betrays him. It would be far better for that man if he had never been born!”
22As they were eating, Jesus took some bread and blessed it. Then he broke it in pieces and gave it to the disciples, saying, “Take it, for this is my body.”
23And he took a cup of wine and gave thanks to God for it. He gave it to them, and they all drank from it. 24And he said to them, “This is my blood, which confirms the covenant#14:24 Some manuscripts read the new covenant. between God and his people. It is poured out as a sacrifice for many. 25I tell you the truth, I will not drink wine again until the day I drink it new in the Kingdom of God.”
26Then they sang a hymn and went out to the Mount of Olives.
Jesus Predicts Peter’s Denial
27On the way, Jesus told them, “All of you will desert me. For the Scriptures say,
‘God will strike # 14:27 Greek I will strike. Zech 13:7. the Shepherd,
and the sheep will be scattered.’
28 But after I am raised from the dead, I will go ahead of you to Galilee and meet you there.”
29Peter said to him, “Even if everyone else deserts you, I never will.”
30Jesus replied, “I tell you the truth, Peter—this very night, before the rooster crows twice, you will deny three times that you even know me.”
31“No!” Peter declared emphatically. “Even if I have to die with you, I will never deny you!” And all the others vowed the same.
Jesus Prays in Gethsemane
32They went to the olive grove called Gethsemane, and Jesus said, “Sit here while I go and pray.” 33He took Peter, James, and John with him, and he became deeply troubled and distressed. 34He told them, “My soul is crushed with grief to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with me.”
35He went on a little farther and fell to the ground. He prayed that, if it were possible, the awful hour awaiting him might pass him by. 36“Abba, Father,”#14:36 Abba is an Aramaic term for “father.” he cried out, “everything is possible for you. Please take this cup of suffering away from me. Yet I want your will to be done, not mine.”
37Then he returned and found the disciples asleep. He said to Peter, “Simon, are you asleep? Couldn’t you watch with me even one hour? 38Keep watch and pray, so that you will not give in to temptation. For the spirit is willing, but the body is weak.”
39Then Jesus left them again and prayed the same prayer as before. 40When he returned to them again, he found them sleeping, for they couldn’t keep their eyes open. And they didn’t know what to say.
41When he returned to them the third time, he said, “Go ahead and sleep. Have your rest. But no—the time has come. The Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners. 42Up, let’s be going. Look, my betrayer is here!”
Jesus Is Betrayed and Arrested
43And immediately, even as Jesus said this, Judas, one of the twelve disciples, arrived with a crowd of men armed with swords and clubs. They had been sent by the leading priests, the teachers of religious law, and the elders. 44The traitor, Judas, had given them a prearranged signal: “You will know which one to arrest when I greet him with a kiss. Then you can take him away under guard.” 45As soon as they arrived, Judas walked up to Jesus. “Rabbi!” he exclaimed, and gave him the kiss.
46Then the others grabbed Jesus and arrested him. 47But one of the men with Jesus pulled out his sword and struck the high priest’s slave, slashing off his ear.
48Jesus asked them, “Am I some dangerous revolutionary, that you come with swords and clubs to arrest me? 49Why didn’t you arrest me in the Temple? I was there among you teaching every day. But these things are happening to fulfill what the Scriptures say about me.”
50Then all his disciples deserted him and ran away. 51One young man following behind was clothed only in a long linen shirt. When the mob tried to grab him, 52he slipped out of his shirt and ran away naked.
Jesus before the Council
53They took Jesus to the high priest’s home where the leading priests, the elders, and the teachers of religious law had gathered. 54Meanwhile, Peter followed him at a distance and went right into the high priest’s courtyard. There he sat with the guards, warming himself by the fire.
55Inside, the leading priests and the entire high council#14:55 Greek the Sanhedrin. were trying to find evidence against Jesus, so they could put him to death. But they couldn’t find any. 56Many false witnesses spoke against him, but they contradicted each other. 57Finally, some men stood up and gave this false testimony: 58“We heard him say, ‘I will destroy this Temple made with human hands, and in three days I will build another, made without human hands.’” 59But even then they didn’t get their stories straight!
60Then the high priest stood up before the others and asked Jesus, “Well, aren’t you going to answer these charges? What do you have to say for yourself?” 61But Jesus was silent and made no reply. Then the high priest asked him, “Are you the Messiah, the Son of the Blessed One?”
62Jesus said, “I Am.#14:62a Or The ‘I Am’ is here; or I am the Lord. See Exod 3:14. And you will see the Son of Man seated in the place of power at God’s right hand#14:62b Greek seated at the right hand of the power. See Ps 110:1. and coming on the clouds of heaven.#14:62c See Dan 7:13.”
63Then the high priest tore his clothing to show his horror and said, “Why do we need other witnesses? 64You have all heard his blasphemy. What is your verdict?”
“Guilty!” they all cried. “He deserves to die!”
65Then some of them began to spit at him, and they blindfolded him and beat him with their fists. “Prophesy to us,” they jeered. And the guards slapped him as they took him away.
Peter Denies Jesus
66Meanwhile, Peter was in the courtyard below. One of the servant girls who worked for the high priest came by 67and noticed Peter warming himself at the fire. She looked at him closely and said, “You were one of those with Jesus of Nazareth.#14:67 Or Jesus the Nazarene.”
68But Peter denied it. “I don’t know what you’re talking about,” he said, and he went out into the entryway. Just then, a rooster crowed.#14:68 Some manuscripts do not include Just then, a rooster crowed.
69When the servant girl saw him standing there, she began telling the others, “This man is definitely one of them!” 70But Peter denied it again.
A little later some of the other bystanders confronted Peter and said, “You must be one of them, because you are a Galilean.”
71Peter swore, “A curse on me if I’m lying—I don’t know this man you’re talking about!” 72And immediately the rooster crowed the second time.
Suddenly, Jesus’ words flashed through Peter’s mind: “Before the rooster crows twice, you will deny three times that you even know me.” And he broke down and wept.
