Jesus Heals a Centurion’s Servant
1Now when He concluded all His sayings in the hearing of the people, He #Matt. 8:5–13entered Capernaum. 2And a certain centurion’s servant, who was dear to him, was sick and ready to die. 3So when he heard about Jesus, he sent elders of the Jews to Him, pleading with Him to come and heal his servant. 4And when they came to Jesus, they begged Him earnestly, saying that the one for whom He should do this was deserving, 5“for he loves our nation, and has built us a synagogue.”
6Then Jesus went with them. And when He was already not far from the house, the centurion sent friends to Him, saying to Him, “Lord, do not trouble Yourself, for I am not worthy that You should enter under my roof. 7Therefore I did not even think myself worthy to come to You. But #Ps. 33:9; 107:20say the word, and my servant will be healed. 8For I also am a man placed under #(Mark 13:34)authority, having soldiers under me. And I say to one, ‘Go,’ and he goes; and to another, ‘Come,’ and he comes; and to my servant, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.”
9When Jesus heard these things, He marveled at him, and turned around and said to the crowd that followed Him, “I say to you, I have not found such great faith, not even in Israel!” 10And those who were sent, returning to the house, found the servant well who had been sick.
Jesus Raises the Son of the Widow of Nain
11Now it happened, the day after, that He went into a city called Nain; and many of His disciples went with Him, and a large crowd. 12And when He came near the gate of the city, behold, a dead man was being carried out, the only son of his mother; and she was a widow. And a large crowd from the city was with her. 13When the Lord saw her, He had #Lam. 3:32; John 11:35; (Heb. 4:15)compassion on her and said to her, #Luke 8:52“Do not weep.” 14Then He came and touched the open coffin, and those who carried him stood still. And He said, “Young man, I say to you, #Mark 5:41; Luke 8:54; John 11:43; Acts 9:40; (Rom. 4:17)arise.” 15So he who was dead #Matt. 11:5; Luke 8:55; John 11:44sat up and began to speak. And He #1 Kin. 17:23; 2 Kin. 4:36presented him to his mother.
16#Luke 1:65Then fear came upon all, and they #Luke 5:26glorified God, saying, #Luke 24:19; John 4:19; 6:14; 9:17“A great prophet has risen up among us”; and, #Luke 1:68“God has visited His people.” 17And this report about Him went throughout all Judea and all the surrounding region.
John the Baptist Sends Messengers to Jesus
18#Matt. 11:2–19Then the disciples of John reported to him concerning all these things. 19And John, calling two of his disciples to him, sent them to Jesus, saying, “Are You #(Mic. 5:2; Zech. 9:9; Mal. 3:1–3)the Coming One, or do we look for another?”
20When the men had come to Him, they said, “John the Baptist has sent us to You, saying, ‘Are You the Coming One, or do we look for another?’ ” 21And that very hour He cured many of infirmities, afflictions, and evil spirits; and to many blind He gave sight.
22#Matt. 11:4Jesus answered and said to them, “Go and tell John the things you have seen and heard: #Is. 35:5that the blind #John 9:7see, the lame #Matt. 15:31walk, the lepers are #Luke 17:12–14cleansed, the deaf #Mark 7:37hear, the dead are raised, #(Is. 61:1–3; Luke 4:18)the poor have the gospel preached to them. 23And blessed is he who is not offended because of Me.”
24#Matt. 11:7When the messengers of John had departed, He began to speak to the multitudes concerning John: “What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken by the wind? 25But what did you go out to see? A man clothed in soft garments? Indeed those who are gorgeously appareled and live in luxury are in kings’ courts. 26But what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I say to you, and more than a prophet. 27This is he of whom it is written:
#Is. 40:3; Mal. 3:1; Matt. 11:10; Mark 1:2‘Behold, I send My messenger before Your face,
Who will prepare Your way before You.’
28For I say to you, among those born of women there is not a #(Luke 1:15)greater prophet than John the Baptist; but he who is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he.”
29And when all the people heard Him, even the tax collectors justified God, #Matt. 3:5; Luke 3:12having been baptized with the baptism of John. 30But the Pharisees and lawyers rejected #Acts 20:27the will of God for themselves, not having been baptized by him.
31And the Lord said, #Matt. 11:16“To what then shall I liken the men of this generation, and what are they like? 32They are like children sitting in the marketplace and calling to one another, saying:
‘We played the flute for you,
And you did not dance;
We mourned to you,
And you did not weep.’
33For #Matt. 3:1John the Baptist came #(Matt. 3:4); Luke 1:15neither eating bread nor drinking wine, and you say, ‘He has a demon.’ 34The Son of Man has come #Luke 15:2eating and drinking, and you say, ‘Look, a glutton and a winebibber, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!’ 35#Matt. 11:19But wisdom is justified by all her children.”
A Sinful Woman Forgiven
36#Matt. 26:6; Mark 14:3; John 11:2Then one of the Pharisees asked Him to eat with him. And He went to the Pharisee’s house, and sat down to eat. 37And behold, a woman in the city who was a sinner, when she knew that Jesus sat at the table in the Pharisee’s house, brought an alabaster flask of fragrant oil, 38and stood at His feet behind Him weeping; and she began to wash His feet with her tears, and wiped them with the hair of her head; and she kissed His feet and anointed them with the fragrant oil. 39Now when the Pharisee who had invited Him saw this, he spoke to himself, saying, #Luke 15:2“This Man, if He were a prophet, would know who and what manner of woman this is who is touching Him, for she is a sinner.”
40And Jesus answered and said to him, “Simon, I have something to say to you.”
So he said, “Teacher, say it.”
41“There was a certain creditor who had two debtors. One owed five hundred #Matt. 18:28; Mark 6:37denarii, and the other fifty. 42And when they had nothing with which to repay, he freely forgave them both. Tell Me, therefore, which of them will love him more?”
43Simon answered and said, “I suppose the one whom he forgave more.”
And He said to him, “You have rightly judged.” 44Then He turned to the woman and said to Simon, “Do you see this woman? I entered your house; you gave Me no #Gen. 18:4; 19:2; 43:24; Judg. 19:21; 1 Tim. 5:10water for My feet, but she has washed My feet with her tears and wiped them with the hair of her head. 45You gave Me no #Rom. 16:16kiss, but this woman has not ceased to kiss My feet since the time I came in. 46#2 Sam. 12:20; Ps. 23:5; Eccl. 9:8; Dan. 10:3You did not anoint My head with oil, but this woman has anointed My feet with fragrant oil. 47#(1 Tim. 1:14)Therefore I say to you, her sins, which are many, are forgiven, for she loved much. But to whom little is forgiven, the same loves little.”
48Then He said to her, #Matt. 9:2; Mark 2:5“Your sins are forgiven.”
49And those who sat at the table with Him began to say to themselves, #Matt. 9:3; (Mark 2:7); Luke 5:21“Who is this who even forgives sins?”
50Then He said to the woman, #Matt. 9:22; Mark 5:34; 10:52; Luke 8:48; 18:42“Your faith has saved you. Go in peace.”

Jesus Heals a Roman Officer's Servant
(Mt 8.5–13)
1When Jesus had finished saying all these things to the people, he went to Capernaum. 2A Roman officer there had a servant who was very dear to him; the man was sick and about to die. 3When the officer heard about Jesus, he sent some Jewish elders to ask him to come and heal his servant. 4They came to Jesus and begged him earnestly, “This man really deserves your help. 5He loves our people and he himself built a synagogue for us.”
6So Jesus went with them. He was not far from the house when the officer sent friends to tell him, “Sir, don't trouble yourself. I do not deserve to have you come into my house, 7neither do I consider myself worthy to come to you in person. Just give the order, and my servant will get well. 8I, too, am a man placed under the authority of superior officers, and I have soldiers under me. I order this one, ‘Go!’ and he goes; I order that one, ‘Come!’ and he comes; and I order my slave, ‘Do this!’ and he does it.”
9Jesus was surprised when he heard this; he turned round and said to the crowd following him, “I tell you, I have never found faith like this, not even in Israel!”
10The messengers went back to the officer's house and found his servant well.
Jesus Raises a Widow's Son
11Soon afterwards#7.11 Soon afterwards; some manuscripts have The next day. Jesus went to a town called Nain, accompanied by his disciples and a large crowd. 12Just as he arrived at the gate of the town, a funeral procession was coming out. The dead man was the only son of a woman who was a widow, and a large crowd from the town was with her. 13When the Lord saw her, his heart was filled with pity for her, and he said to her, “Don't cry.” 14Then he walked over and touched the coffin, and the men carrying it stopped. Jesus said, “Young man! Get up, I tell you!” 15The dead man sat up and began to talk, and Jesus gave him back to his mother.
16They all were filled with fear and praised God. “A great prophet has appeared among us!” they said; “God has come to save his people!”
17This news about Jesus went out through all the country and the surrounding territory.
The Messengers from John the Baptist
(Mt 11.2–19)
18When John's disciples told him about all these things, he called two of them 19and sent them to the Lord to ask him, “Are you the one John said was going to come, or should we expect someone else?”
20When they came to Jesus, they said, “John the Baptist sent us to ask if you are the one he said was going to come, or if we should expect someone else.”
21At that very time Jesus cured many people of their sicknesses, diseases, and evil spirits, and gave sight to many blind people. 22#Is 35.5–6; 61.1He answered John's messengers, “Go back and tell John what you have seen and heard: the blind can see, the lame can walk, those who suffer from dreaded skin diseases are made clean,#7.22 made clean: See 5.12. the deaf can hear, the dead are raised to life, and the Good News is preached to the poor. 23How happy are those who have no doubts about me!”
24After John's messengers had left, Jesus began to speak about him to the crowds: “When you went out to John in the desert, what did you expect to see? A blade of grass bending in the wind? 25What did you go out to see? A man dressed up in fancy clothes? People who dress like that and live in luxury are found in palaces! 26Tell me, what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes indeed, but you saw much more than a prophet. 27#Mal 3.1For John is the one of whom the scripture says: ‘God said, I will send my messenger ahead of you to open the way for you.’ 28I tell you,” Jesus added, “John is greater than anyone who has ever lived. But the one who is least in the Kingdom of God is greater than John.”
29 #
Mt 21.32; Lk 3.12 All the people heard him; they and especially the tax collectors were the ones who had obeyed God's righteous demands and had been baptized by John. 30But the Pharisees and the teachers of the Law rejected God's purpose for themselves and refused to be baptized by John.
31Jesus continued, “Now to what can I compare the people of this day? What are they like? 32They are like children sitting in the market place. One group shouts to the other, ‘We played wedding music for you, but you wouldn't dance! We sang funeral songs, but you wouldn't cry!’ 33John the Baptist came, and he fasted and drank no wine, and you said, ‘He has a demon in him!’ 34The Son of Man came, and he ate and drank, and you said, ‘Look at this man! He is a glutton and a drinker, a friend of tax collectors and other outcasts!’ 35God's wisdom, however, is shown to be true by all who accept it.”
Jesus at the Home of Simon the Pharisee
36A Pharisee invited Jesus to have dinner with him, and Jesus went to his house and sat down to eat. 37#Mt 26.7; Mk 14.3; Jn 12.3In that town was a woman who lived a sinful life. She heard that Jesus was eating in the Pharisee's house, so she brought an alabaster jar full of perfume 38and stood behind Jesus, by his feet, crying and wetting his feet with her tears. Then she dried his feet with her hair, kissed them, and poured the perfume on them. 39When the Pharisee saw this, he said to himself, “If this man really were a prophet, he would know who this woman is who is touching him; he would know what kind of sinful life she lives!”
40Jesus spoke up and said to him, “Simon, I have something to tell you.”
“Yes, Teacher,” he said, “tell me.”
41 “There were two men who owed money to a moneylender,” Jesus began. “One owed him 500 silver coins, and the other owed him fifty. 42Neither of them could pay him back, so he cancelled the debts of both. Which one, then, will love him more?”
43“I suppose,” answered Simon, “that it would be the one who was forgiven more.”
“You are right,” said Jesus. 44Then he turned to the woman and said to Simon, “Do you see this woman? I came into your home, and you gave me no water for my feet, but she has washed my feet with her tears and dried them with her hair. 45You did not welcome me with a kiss, but she has not stopped kissing my feet since I came. 46You provided no olive oil for my head, but she has covered my feet with perfume. 47I tell you, then, the great love she has shown proves that her many sins have been forgiven. But whoever has been forgiven little shows only a little love.”
48Then Jesus said to the woman, “Your sins are forgiven.”
49The others sitting at the table began to say to themselves, “Who is this, who even forgives sins?”
50But Jesus said to the woman, “Your faith has saved you; go in peace.”
