Four Fishermen Called as Disciples
1So #Matt. 4:18–22; Mark 1:16–20; John 1:40–42it was, as the multitude pressed about Him to #Acts 13:44hear the word of God, that He stood by the Lake of Gennesaret, 2and saw two boats standing by the lake; but the fishermen had gone from them and were washing their nets. 3Then He got into one of the boats, which was Simon’s, and asked him to put out a little from the land. And He #John 8:2sat down and taught the multitudes from the boat.
4When He had stopped speaking, He said to Simon, #John 21:6“Launch out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch.”
5But Simon answered and said to Him, “Master, we have toiled all night and caught #John 21:3nothing; nevertheless #Ps. 33:9at Your word I will let down the net.” 6And when they had done this, they caught a great number of fish, and their net was breaking. 7So they signaled to their partners in the other boat to come and help them. And they came and filled both the boats, so that they began to sink. 8When Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus’ knees, saying, #2 Sam. 6:9; 1 Kin. 17:18“Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord!”
9For he and all who were with him were #Mark 5:42; 10:24, 26astonished at the catch of fish which they had taken; 10and so also were James and John, the sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon. And Jesus said to Simon, “Do not be afraid. #Matt. 4:19; Mark 1:17From now on you will catch men.” 11So when they had brought their boats to land, #Matt. 4:20; 19:27; (Mark 1:18; 8:34, 35; Luke 9:59–62); John 12:26they forsook all and followed Him.
Jesus Cleanses a Leper
12#Matt. 8:2–4; Mark 1:40–44And it happened when He was in a certain city, that behold, a man who was full of #Lev. 13:14leprosy saw Jesus; and he fell on his face and implored Him, saying, “Lord, if You are willing, You can make me clean.”
13Then He put out His hand and touched him, saying, “I am willing; be cleansed.” #Matt. 20:34; Luke 8:44; John 5:9Immediately the leprosy left him. 14#Matt. 8:4; Luke 17:14And He charged him to tell no one, “But go and show yourself to the priest, and make an offering for your cleansing, as a testimony to them, #Lev. 13:1–3; 14:2–32just as Moses commanded.”
15However, #Mark 1:45the report went around concerning Him all the more; and #Matt. 4:25; Mark 3:7; John 6:2great multitudes came together to hear, and to be healed by Him of their infirmities. 16#Luke 9:10So He Himself often withdrew into the wilderness and #Matt. 14:23; Mark 1:35; Luke 6:12; 9:18; 11:1prayed.
Jesus Forgives and Heals a Paralytic
17Now it happened on a certain day, as He was teaching, that there were Pharisees and teachers of the law sitting by, who had come out of every town of Galilee, Judea, and Jerusalem. And the power of the Lord was present to heal them. 18#Matt. 9:2–8; Mark 2:3–12Then behold, men brought on a bed a man who was paralyzed, whom they sought to bring in and lay before Him. 19And when they could not find how they might bring him in, because of the crowd, they went up on the housetop and let him down with his bed through the tiling into the midst #Matt. 15:30before Jesus.
20When He saw their faith, He said to him, “Man, your sins are forgiven you.”
21#Matt. 9:3; 26:65; Mark 2:6, 7; John 10:33And the scribes and the Pharisees began to reason, saying, “Who is this who speaks blasphemies? #Ps. 32:5; 130:4; Is. 43:25Who can forgive sins but God alone?”
22But when Jesus #Luke 9:47; John 2:25perceived their thoughts, He answered and said to them, “Why are you reasoning in your hearts? 23Which is easier, to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven you,’ or to say, ‘Rise up and walk’? 24But that you may know that the Son of Man has power on earth to forgive sins”—He said to the man who was paralyzed, #Mark 2:11; 5:41; Luke 7:14“I say to you, arise, take up your bed, and go to your house.”
25Immediately he rose up before them, took up what he had been lying on, and departed to his own house, #Luke 17:15, 18; Acts 3:8glorifying God. 26And they were all amazed, and they #Luke 1:65; 7:16glorified God and were filled with fear, saying, “We have seen strange things today!”
Matthew the Tax Collector
27#Matt. 9:9–17; Mark 2:13–22After these things He went out and saw a tax collector named Levi, sitting at the tax office. And He said to him, #(Mark 8:34); Luke 9:59; John 12:26; 21:19, 22“Follow Me.” 28So he left all, rose up, and #Matt. 4:22; 19:27; Mark 10:28followed Him.
29#Matt. 9:9, 10; Mark 2:15Then Levi gave Him a great feast in his own house. And #Luke 15:1there were a great number of tax collectors and others who sat down with them. 30And their scribes and the Pharisees complained against His disciples, saying, #Matt. 11:19; Luke 15:2; Acts 23:9“Why do You eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners?”
31Jesus answered and said to them, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. 32#Matt. 9:13; 1 Tim. 1:15I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners, to repentance.”
Jesus Is Questioned About Fasting
33Then they said to Him, #Matt. 9:14; Mark 2:18; Luke 7:33“Why do the disciples of John fast often and make prayers, and likewise those of the Pharisees, but Yours eat and drink?”
34And He said to them, “Can you make the friends of the bridegroom fast while the #John 3:29bridegroom is with them? 35But the days will come when the bridegroom will be taken away from them; then they will fast in those days.”
36#Matt. 9:16, 17; Mark 2:21, 22Then He spoke a parable to them: “No one puts a piece from a new garment on an old one; otherwise the new makes a tear, and also the piece that was taken out of the new does not match the old. 37And no one puts new wine into old wineskins; or else the new wine will burst the wineskins and be spilled, and the wineskins will be ruined. 38But new wine must be put into new wineskins, and both are preserved. 39And no one, having drunk old wine, immediately desires new; for he says, ‘The old is better.’ ”

Jesus Calls the First Disciples
(Mt 4.18–22; Mk 1.16–20)
1 #
Mt 13.1–2; Mk 3.9–10; 4.1 One day Jesus was standing on the shore of Lake Gennesaret while the people pushed their way up to him to listen to the word of God. 2He saw two boats pulled up on the beach; the fishermen had left them and were washing the nets. 3Jesus got into one of the boats — it belonged to Simon — and asked him to push off a little from the shore. Jesus sat in the boat and taught the crowd.
4When he finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Push the boat out further to the deep water, and you and your partners let down your nets for a catch.”

Jn 21.3
“Master,” Simon answered, “we worked hard all night long and caught nothing. But if you say so, I will let down the nets.” 6#Jn 21.6They let them down and caught such a large number of fish that the nets were about to break. 7So they motioned to their partners in the other boat to come and help them. They came and filled both boats so full of fish that the boats were about to sink. 8When Simon Peter saw what had happened, he fell on his knees before Jesus and said, “Go away from me, Lord! I am a sinful man!”
9He and the others with him were all amazed at the large number of fish they had caught. 10The same was true of Simon's partners, James and John, the sons of Zebedee. Jesus said to Simon, “Don't be afraid; from now on you will be catching people.”
11They pulled the boats up on the beach, left everything, and followed Jesus.
Jesus Heals a Man
(Mt 8.1–4; Mk 1.40–45)
12Once Jesus was in a town where there was a man who was suffering from a dreaded skin disease. When he saw Jesus, he threw himself down and begged him, “Sir, if you want to, you can make me clean!”#5.12 make me clean: This disease was considered to make a person ritually unclean.
13Jesus stretched out his hand and touched him. “I do want to,” he answered. “Be clean!” At once the disease left the man. 14#Lev 14.1–32Jesus ordered him, “Don't tell anyone, but go straight to the priest and let him examine you; then to prove to everyone that you are cured, offer the sacrifice as Moses ordered.”
15But the news about Jesus spread all the more widely, and crowds of people came to hear him and be healed from their diseases. 16But he would go away to lonely places, where he prayed.
Jesus Heals a Paralysed Man
(Mt 9.1–8; Mk 2.1–12)
17One day when Jesus was teaching, some Pharisees and teachers of the Law were sitting there who had come from every town in Galilee and Judea and from Jerusalem. The power of the Lord was present for Jesus to heal the sick. 18Some men came carrying a paralysed man on a bed, and they tried to take him into the house and put him in front of Jesus. 19Because of the crowd, however, they could find no way to take him in. So they carried him up on the roof, made an opening in the tiles, and let him down on his bed into the middle of the group in front of Jesus. 20When Jesus saw how much faith they had, he said to the man, “Your sins are forgiven, my friend.”
21The teachers of the Law and the Pharisees began to say to themselves, “Who is this man who speaks such blasphemy! God is the only one who can forgive sins!”
22Jesus knew their thoughts and said to them, “Why do you think such things? 23Is it easier to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven you,’ or to say, ‘Get up and walk’? 24I will prove to you, then, that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins.” So he said to the paralysed man, “I tell you, get up, pick up your bed, and go home!”
25At once the man got up in front of them all, took the bed he had been lying on, and went home, praising God. 26They were all completely amazed! Full of fear, they praised God, saying, “What marvellous things we have seen today!”
Jesus Calls Levi
(Mt 9.9–13; Mk 2.13–17)
27After this, Jesus went out and saw a tax collector named Levi, sitting in his office. Jesus said to him, “Follow me.” 28Levi got up, left everything, and followed him.
29Then Levi had a big feast in his house for Jesus, and among the guests was a large number of tax collectors and other people. 30#Lk 15.1–2Some Pharisees and some teachers of the Law who belonged to their group complained to Jesus' disciples. “Why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and other outcasts?” they asked.
31Jesus answered them, “People who are well do not need a doctor, but only those who are sick. 32I have not come to call respectable people to repent, but outcasts.”
The Question about Fasting
(Mt 9.14–17; Mk 2.18–22)
33Some people said to Jesus, “The disciples of John fast frequently and offer prayers, and the disciples of the Pharisees do the same; but your disciples eat and drink.”
34Jesus answered, “Do you think you can make the guests at a wedding party go without food as long as the bridegroom is with them? Of course not! 35But the day will come when the bridegroom will be taken away from them, and then they will fast.”
36Jesus also told them this parable: “No one tears a piece off a new coat to patch up an old coat. If he does, he will have torn the new coat, and the piece of new cloth will not match the old. 37Nor does anyone pour new wine into used wineskins, because the new wine will burst the skins, the wine will pour out, and the skins will be ruined. 38Instead, new wine must be poured into fresh wineskins! 39And no one wants new wine after drinking old wine. ‘The old is better,’ he says.”
