Judgment on Philistia
1The word of the Lord that came to Jeremiah the prophet #Is. 14:29–31; Ezek. 25:15–17; Zeph. 2:4, 5; Zech. 9:6against the Philistines, #Amos 1:6before Pharaoh attacked Gaza.
2Thus says the Lord:
“Behold, #Is. 8:7, 8; Jer. 46:7, 8waters rise #Jer. 1:14out of the north,
And shall be an overflowing flood;
They shall overflow the land and all that is in it,
The city and those who dwell within;
Then the men shall cry,
And all the inhabitants of the land shall wail.
3At the #Judg. 5:22; Jer. 8:16; Nah. 3:2noise of the stamping hooves of his strong horses,
At the rushing of his chariots,
At the rumbling of his wheels,
The fathers will not look back for their children,
Lacking courage,
4Because of the day that comes to plunder all the #Is. 14:29–31Philistines,
To cut off from #Is. 23:1–18; Jer. 25:22; Ezek. 26:1–21; 28:20–24; Amos 1:9, 10; Zech. 9:2–4Tyre and Sidon every helper who remains;
For the Lord shall plunder the Philistines,
#Ezek. 25:16; Amos 1:8The remnant of the country of #Gen. 10:14; Deut. 2:23; Amos 9:7Caphtor.
5#Jer. 48:37; Mic. 1:16; Zeph. 2:4Baldness has come upon Gaza,
#Judg. 1:18; Jer. 25:20; Amos 1:7, 8; Zech. 9:5Ashkelon is cut off
With the remnant of their valley.
How long will you cut yourself?
6“O you #Deut. 32:41; Judg. 7:20; Jer. 12:12; Ezek. 21:3–5sword of the Lord,
How long until you are quiet?
Put yourself up into your scabbard,
Rest and be still!
7How can it be quiet,
Seeing the Lord has #Is. 10:6; Ezek. 14:17given it a charge
Against Ashkelon and against the seashore?
There He has #Mic. 6:9appointed it.”

The LORD's Message about Philistia
1 #
Is 14.29–31; Ezek 25.15–17; Joel 3.4–8; Amos 1.6–8; Zeph 2.4–7; Zech 9.5–7 Before the king of Egypt attacked Gaza, the LORD spoke to me about Philistia. 2He said:
“Look! Waters are rising in the north
and will rush like a river in flood.
They will cover the land and everything on it,
cities and the people who live there.
People will call out for help;
everyone on earth will cry bitterly.
3They will hear the hoof beats of horses,
the clatter of chariots,
the rumble of wheels.
Parents will not turn back for their children;
their hands will hang limp at their sides.
4The time has come to destroy Philistia,
to cut off from Tyre and Sidon
all the help that remains.
I, the LORD, will destroy the Philistines,
all who came from the shores of Crete.
5Great sorrow has come to the people of Gaza,
and Ashkelon's people are silent.
How long will the rest of Philistia mourn?
6You cry out, ‘Sword of the LORD!
How long will you go on slashing?
Go back to your scabbard,
stay there and rest!’
7But how can it rest,
when I have given it work to do?
I have commanded it to attack Ashkelon
and the people who live on the coast.”
