Hananiah’s Falsehood and Doom
1And #Jer. 27:1it happened in the same year, at the beginning of the reign of Zedekiah king of Judah, in the #Jer. 51:59fourth year and in the fifth month, that Hananiah the son of #Ezek. 11:1Azur the prophet, who was from Gibeon, spoke to me in the house of the Lord in the presence of the priests and of all the people, saying, 2“Thus speaks the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, saying: ‘I have broken #Jer. 27:12the yoke of the king of Babylon. 3#Jer. 27:16Within two full years I will bring back to this place all the vessels of the Lord’s house, that Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon #2 Kin. 24:13; Dan. 1:2took away from this place and carried to Babylon. 4And I will bring back to this place Jeconiah the son of Jehoiakim, king of Judah, with all the captives of Judah who went to Babylon,’ says the Lord, ‘for I will break the yoke of the king of Babylon.’ ”
5Then the prophet Jeremiah spoke to the prophet Hananiah in the presence of the priests and in the presence of all the people who stood in the house of the Lord, 6and the prophet Jeremiah said, #1 Kin. 1:36; Ps. 41:13; Jer. 11:5“Amen! The Lord do so; the Lord perform your words which you have prophesied, to bring back the vessels of the Lord’s house and all who were carried away captive, from Babylon to this place. 7Nevertheless hear now this word that I speak in your hearing and in the hearing of all the people: 8The prophets who have been before me and before you of old prophesied against many countries and great kingdoms—of war and disaster and pestilence. 9As for #Deut. 18:22the prophet who prophesies of #Jer. 23:17; Ezek. 13:10, 16peace, when the word of the prophet comes to pass, the prophet will be known as one whom the Lord has truly sent.”
10Then Hananiah the prophet took the #Jer. 27:2yoke off the prophet Jeremiah’s neck and broke it. 11And Hananiah spoke in the presence of all the people, saying, “Thus says the Lord: ‘Even so I will break the yoke of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon #Jer. 27:7from the neck of all nations within the space of two full years.’ ” And the prophet Jeremiah went his way.
12Now the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah, after Hananiah the prophet had broken the yoke from the neck of the prophet Jeremiah, saying, 13“Go and tell Hananiah, saying, ‘Thus says the Lord: “You have broken the yokes of wood, but you have made in their place yokes of iron.” 14For thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: #Deut. 28:48; Jer. 27:7, 8“I have put a yoke of iron on the neck of all these nations, that they may serve Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon; and they shall serve him. #Jer. 27:6I have given him the beasts of the field also.” ’ ”
15Then the prophet Jeremiah said to Hananiah the prophet, “Hear now, Hananiah, the Lord has not sent you, but #Jer. 20:6; 29:31; Lam. 2:14; Ezek. 13:22; Zech. 13:3you make this people trust in a #Jer. 27:10; 29:9lie. 16Therefore thus says the Lord: ‘Behold, I will cast you from the face of the earth. This year you shall #Jer. 20:6die, because you have taught #Deut. 13:5; Jer. 29:32rebellion against the Lord.’ ”
17So Hananiah the prophet died the same year in the seventh month.

Jeremiah and the Prophet Hananiah
1 #
2 Kgs 24.18–20; 2 Chr 36.11–13 That same year,#28.1 One ancient translation That same year; Hebrew That same year at the beginning of his reign. in the fifth month of the fourth year that Zedekiah was king, Hananiah son of Azzur, a prophet from the town of Gibeon, spoke to me in the Temple. In the presence of the priests and of the people he told me 2that the LORD Almighty, the God of Israel, had said: “I have broken the power of the king of Babylonia. 3Within two years I will bring back to this place all the temple treasures that King Nebuchadnezzar took to Babylonia. 4I will also bring back the king of Judah, Jehoiachin son of Jehoiakim, along with all the people of Judah who went into exile in Babylonia. Yes, I will break the power of the king of Babylonia. I, the LORD, have spoken.”
5Then in the presence of the priests and of all the people who were standing in the Temple, I said to Hananiah: 6“Wonderful! I hope the LORD will do this! I certainly hope he will make your prophecy come true and will bring back from Babylonia all the temple treasures and all the people who were taken away as prisoners. 7But listen to what I say to you and to the people. 8The prophets who spoke long ago, before my time and yours, predicted that war, starvation, and disease would come to many nations and powerful kingdoms. 9But a prophet who predicts peace can only be recognized as a prophet whom the LORD has truly sent when that prophet's predictions come true.”
10Then Hananiah took the yoke off my neck, broke it in pieces, 11and said in the presence of all the people: “The LORD has said that this is how he will break the yoke that King Nebuchadnezzar has put on the neck of all the nations; and he will do this within two years.” Then I left.
12Some time after this the LORD told me 13to go and say to Hananiah: “The LORD has said that you may be able to break a wooden yoke, but he#28.13 One ancient translation he; Hebrew you. will replace it with an iron yoke. 14The LORD Almighty, the God of Israel, has said that he will put an iron yoke on all these nations and that they will serve King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylonia. The LORD has said that he will make even the wild animals serve Nebuchadnezzar.”
15Then I told Hananiah this, and added, “Listen, Hananiah! The LORD did not send you, and you are making these people believe a lie. 16And so the LORD himself says that he is going to get rid of you. Before this year is over you will die because you have told the people to rebel against the LORD.”
17And Hananiah died in the seventh month of that same year.
