Isaiah 16

Moab Destroyed
1Send #2 Kin. 3:4; Ezra 7:17the lamb to the ruler of the land,
#2 Kin. 14:7; Is. 42:11From Sela to the wilderness,
To the mount of the daughter of Zion.
2For it shall be as a #Prov. 27:8wandering bird thrown out of the nest;
So shall be the daughters of Moab at the fords of the #Num. 21:13Arnon.
3“Take counsel, execute judgment;
Make your shadow like the night in the middle of the day;
Hide the outcasts,
Do not betray him who escapes.
4Let My outcasts dwell with you, O Moab;
Be a shelter to them from the face of the spoiler.
For the extortioner is at an end,
Devastation ceases,
The oppressors are consumed out of the land.
5In mercy #(Is. 9:6, 7; 32:1; 55:4; Dan. 7:14; Mic. 4:7; Luke 1:33; Rev. 11:15)the throne will be established;
And One will sit on it in truth, in the tabernacle of David,
#Ps. 72:2Judging and seeking justice and hastening #Is. 9:7righteousness.”
6We have heard of the #Jer. 48:29; Amos 2:1; Obad. 3, 4; Zeph. 2:8, 10pride of Moab—
He is very proud—
Of his haughtiness and his pride and his wrath;
#Is. 28:15But his lies shall not be so.
7Therefore Moab shall #Jer. 48:20wail for Moab;
Everyone shall wail.
For the foundations #2 Kin. 3:25; Jer. 48:31of Kir Hareseth you shall mourn;
Surely they are stricken.
8For #Is. 24:7the fields of Heshbon languish,
And #Is. 16:9the vine of Sibmah;
The lords of the nations have broken down its choice plants,
Which have reached to Jazer
And wandered through the wilderness.
Her branches are stretched out,
They are gone over the #Jer. 48:32sea.
9Therefore I will bewail the vine of Sibmah,
With the weeping of Jazer;
I will drench you with my tears,
#Is. 15:4O Heshbon and Elealeh;
For battle cries have fallen
Over your summer fruits and your harvest.
10#Is. 24:8; Jer. 48:33Gladness is taken away,
And joy from the plentiful field;
In the vineyards there will be no singing,
Nor will there be shouting;
No treaders will tread out wine in the presses;
I have made their shouting cease.
11Therefore #Is. 15:5; 63:15; Jer. 48:36; Hos. 11:8; Phil. 2:1my heart shall resound like a harp for Moab,
And my inner being for Kir Heres.
12And it shall come to pass,
When it is seen that Moab is weary on #Is. 15:2the high place,
That he will come to his sanctuary to pray;
But he will not prevail.
13This is the word which the Lord has spoken concerning Moab since that time. 14But now the Lord has spoken, saying, “Within three years, #Job 7:1; 14:6; Is. 21:16as the years of a hired man, the glory of Moab will be despised with all that great multitude, and the remnant will be very small and feeble.”

Isaiah 16
16
1 #
2 Kgs. 3:4 Send the lamb to the ruler of the land,
from #ch. 42:11; 2 Kgs. 14:7Sela, by way of the desert,
to the mount of the daughter of Zion.
2Like fleeing birds,
like a scattered nest,
so are the daughters of Moab
at #Judg. 11:18the fords of the Arnon.
3“Give counsel;
grant justice;
# [1 Kgs. 18:4] make your shade like night
at the height of noon;
shelter the outcasts;
do not reveal the fugitive;
4let #1 Sam. 22:3the outcasts of Moab
sojourn among you;
be a shelter to them#16:4 Some Hebrew manuscripts, Septuagint, Syriac; Masoretic Text let my outcasts sojourn among you; as for Moab, be a shelter to them
from the destroyer.
When the oppressor is no more,
and destruction has ceased,
and he who tramples underfoot has vanished from the land,
5 # ch. 32:1, 2; Dan. 7:14, 27; Mic. 4:7; Luke 1:33 then a throne will be established in steadfast love,
and on it will sit in faithfulness
in the tent of David
one who judges and seeks justice
and is swift to do righteousness.”
6 #
Jer. 48:29; Zeph. 2:10 We have heard of the pride of Moab—
how proud he is!—
#
Judg. 3:14; 2 Kgs. 13:20; [2 Chr. 20:1] of his arrogance, his pride, and his insolence;
in his idle boasting he is not right.
7Therefore let Moab wail for Moab,
# ch. 15:3 let everyone wail.
Mourn, utterly stricken,
for the #2 Sam. 6:19; [ver. 9] raisin cakes of #2 Kgs. 3:25; [ch. 15:1]Kir-hareseth.
8For the fields of Heshbon languish,
and #Jer. 48:32the vine of Sibmah;
the lords of the nations
have struck down its branches,
which reached to Jazer
and strayed to the desert;
its shoots spread abroad
and passed over the sea.
9Therefore #[ch. 15:5] I weep with #[See ver. 8 above] the weeping of Jazer
for the vine of Sibmah;
I drench you with my tears,
O Heshbon and Elealeh;
for over #[ver. 7]your summer fruit and your harvest
the shout has ceased.
10 #
Jer. 48:33 And joy and gladness are taken away from #[ch. 9:3] the fruitful field,
and in the vineyards no #[Judg. 9:27] songs are sung,
no cheers are raised;
no #ch. 63:3; Jer. 25:30 treader treads out wine #ch. 5:2in the presses;
I have put an end to the shouting.
11Therefore #ch. 15:5; Jer. 48:36my inner parts moan like a lyre for Moab,
and my inmost self for Kir-hareseth.
12And when Moab presents himself, when #[1 Kgs. 18:29] he wearies himself on #ch. 15:2; [Num. 22:41; 23:14, 28]the high place, when he comes to his sanctuary to pray, he will not prevail.
13This is the word that the Lord spoke concerning Moab #See Amos 2:1-3in the past. 14But now the Lord has spoken, saying, “In three years, #ch. 21:16 like the years of a hired worker, the glory of Moab will be brought into contempt, in spite of all his great multitude, and those who remain will be #[ch. 10:22]very few and feeble.”
