The Fifth Plague: Livestock Diseased
1Then the Lord said to Moses, #Ex. 4:23; 8:1“Go in to Pharaoh and tell him, ‘Thus says the Lord God of the Hebrews: “Let My people go, that they may #Ex. 7:16serve Me. 2For if you #Ex. 8:2refuse to let them go, and still hold them, 3behold, the #Ex. 7:4; 1 Sam. 5:6; Ps. 39:10; Acts 13:11hand of the Lord will be on your cattle in the field, on the horses, on the donkeys, on the camels, on the oxen, and on the sheep—a very severe pestilence. 4And #Ex. 8:22the Lord will make a difference between the livestock of Israel and the livestock of Egypt. So nothing shall die of all that belongs to the children of Israel.” ’ ” 5Then the Lord appointed a set time, saying, “Tomorrow the Lord will do this thing in the land.”
6So the Lord did this thing on the next day, and #Ex. 9:19, 20, 25; Ps. 78:48, 50all the livestock of Egypt died; but of the livestock of the children of Israel, not one died. 7Then Pharaoh sent, and indeed, not even one of the livestock of the Israelites was dead. But the #Ex. 7:14; 8:32heart of Pharaoh became hard, and he did not let the people go.
The Sixth Plague: Boils
8So the Lord said to Moses and Aaron, “Take for yourselves handfuls of ashes from a furnace, and let Moses scatter it toward the heavens in the sight of Pharaoh. 9And it will become fine dust in all the land of Egypt, and it will cause #Deut. 28:27; Rev. 16:2boils that break out in sores on man and beast throughout all the land of Egypt.” 10Then they took ashes from the furnace and stood before Pharaoh, and Moses scattered them toward heaven. And they caused #Deut. 28:27boils that break out in sores on man and beast. 11And the #(Ex. 8:18, 19; 2 Tim. 3:9)magicians could not stand before Moses because of the #Deut. 28:27; Job 2:7; Rev. 16:1, 2boils, for the boils were on the magicians and on all the Egyptians. 12But the Lord hardened the heart of Pharaoh; and he #Ex. 7:13did not heed them, just #Ex. 4:21as the Lord had spoken to Moses.
The Seventh Plague: Hail
13Then the Lord said to Moses, #Ex. 8:20“Rise early in the morning and stand before Pharaoh, and say to him, ‘Thus says the Lord God of the Hebrews: “Let My people go, that they may #Ex. 9:1serve Me, 14for at this time I will send all My plagues to your very heart, and on your servants and on your people, #Ex. 8:10; Deut. 3:24; 2 Sam. 7:22; 1 Chr. 17:20; Ps. 86:8; Is. 45:5–8; 46:9; Jer. 10:6, 7that you may know that there is none like Me in all the earth. 15Now if I had #Ex. 3:20; 7:5stretched out My hand and struck you and your people with #Ex. 5:3pestilence, then you would have been cut off from the earth. 16But indeed for #Ex. 14:17; Prov. 16:4; (Rom. 9:17, 18; 1 Pet. 2:8, 9)this purpose I have raised you up, that I may #Ex. 7:4, 5; 10:1; 11:9; 14:17show My power in you, and that My #1 Kin. 8:43name may be declared in all the earth. 17As yet you exalt yourself against My people in that you will not let them go. 18Behold, tomorrow about this time I will cause very heavy hail to rain down, such as has not been in Egypt since its founding until now. 19Therefore send now and gather your livestock and all that you have in the field, for the hail shall come down on every man and every animal which is found in the field and is not brought home; and they shall die.” ’ ”
20He who #Ex. 1:17; 14:31; (Prov. 13:13)feared the word of the Lord among the #Ex. 8:19; 10:7servants of Pharaoh made his servants and his livestock flee to the houses. 21But he who did not regard the word of the Lord left his servants and his livestock in the field.
22Then the Lord said to Moses, “Stretch out your hand toward heaven, that there may be #Rev. 16:21hail in all the land of Egypt—on man, on beast, and on every herb of the field, throughout the land of Egypt.” 23And Moses stretched out his rod toward heaven; and #Gen. 19:24; Josh. 10:11; Ps. 18:13; 78:47; 105:32; 148:8; Is. 30:30; Ezek. 38:22; Rev. 8:7the Lord sent thunder and hail, and fire darted to the ground. And the Lord rained hail on the land of Egypt. 24So there was hail, and fire mingled with the hail, so very heavy that there was none like it in all the land of Egypt since it became a nation. 25And the #Ex. 9:19; Ps. 78:47, 48; 105:32, 33hail struck throughout the whole land of Egypt, all that was in the field, both man and beast; and the hail struck every herb of the field and broke every tree of the field. 26#Ex. 8:22, 23; 9:4, 6; 10:23; 11:7; 12:13; Is. 32:18, 19Only in the land of Goshen, where the children of Israel were, there was no hail.
27And Pharaoh sent and #Ex. 8:8called for Moses and Aaron, and said to them, #Ex. 9:34; 10:16, 17“I have sinned this time. #2 Chr. 12:6; Ps. 129:4; 145:17; Lam. 1:18The Lord is righteous, and my people and I are wicked. 28#Ex. 8:8, 28; 10:17; Acts 8:24Entreat the Lord, that there may be no more mighty thundering and hail, for it is enough. I will let you #Ex. 8:25; 10:8, 24go, and you shall stay no longer.”
29So Moses said to him, “As soon as I have gone out of the city, I will #1 Kin. 8:22, 38; Ps. 143:6; Is. 1:15spread out my hands to the Lord; the thunder will cease, and there will be no more hail, that you may know that the #Ex. 8:22; 19:5; 20:11; Ps. 24:1; 1 Cor. 10:26, 28earth is the Lord’s. 30But as for you and your servants, #Ex. 8:29; (Is. 26:10)I know that you will not yet fear the Lord God.”
31Now the flax and the barley were struck, #Ruth 1:22; 2:23for the barley was in the head and the flax was in bud. 32But the wheat and the spelt were not struck, for they are late crops.
33So Moses went out of the city from Pharaoh and #Ex. 8:12; 9:29spread out his hands to the Lord; then the thunder and the hail ceased, and the rain was not poured on the earth. 34And when Pharaoh saw that the rain, the hail, and the thunder had ceased, he sinned yet more; and he hardened his heart, he and his servants. 35So #Ex. 4:21the heart of Pharaoh was hard; neither would he let the children of Israel go, as the Lord had spoken by Moses.

The Plague on Livestock
1Then the Lord spoke to Moses. He said, “Go to Pharaoh. Tell him, ‘The Lord, the God of the Hebrews, says, “Let my people go. Then they will be able to worship me. 2Do not refuse to let them go. Do not keep holding them back. 3If you refuse, my powerful hand will bring a terrible plague on you. I will strike your livestock in the fields. I will strike your horses, donkeys, camels, cattle, sheep and goats. 4But I will treat Israel’s livestock differently from yours. No animal that belongs to the people of Israel will die.” ’ ”
5The Lord set a time for the plague. He said, “Tomorrow I will send it on the land.” 6So the next day the Lord sent it. All the livestock of the Egyptians died. But not one animal that belonged to the Israelites died. 7Pharaoh searched and found out what had happened. He discovered that not even one animal that belonged to the Israelites had died. But he was still very stubborn. He wouldn’t let the people go.
The Plague of Boils
8Then the Lord spoke to Moses and Aaron. He said, “Take handfuls of ashes from a furnace. Have Moses toss them into the air in front of Pharaoh. 9The ashes will turn into fine dust over the whole land of Egypt. Then painful boils will break out on people and animals all over the land. Their bodies will be covered with them.”
10So Moses and Aaron took ashes from a furnace and stood in front of Pharaoh. Moses tossed them into the air. Then boils broke out on people and animals alike. 11The bodies of all the Egyptians were covered with boils. The magicians couldn’t stand in front of Moses because of the boils that were all over them. 12But the Lord made Pharaoh stubborn. Pharaoh wouldn’t listen to Moses and Aaron, just as the Lord had said to Moses.
The Plague of Hail
13Then the Lord spoke to Moses. He said, “Get up early in the morning. Go to Pharaoh and say to him, ‘The Lord, the God of the Hebrews, says, “Let my people go. Then they will be able to worship me. 14If you do not let them go, I will send the full force of my plagues against you this time. They will strike your officials and your people. Then you will know that there is no one like me in the whole earth. 15By now I could have reached out my hand. I could have struck you and your people with a plague that would have wiped you off the earth. 16But I had a special reason for making you king. I decided to show you my power. I wanted my name to become known everywhere on earth. 17But you are still against my people. You will not let them go. 18So at this time tomorrow I will send the worst hailstorm ever to fall on Egypt in its entire history. 19Give an order now to bring your livestock inside to a safe place. Bring in everything that is outside. The hail will fall on all the people and animals that are left outside. They will die.” ’ ”
20The officials of Pharaoh who had respect for what the Lord had said obeyed him. They hurried to bring their slaves and their livestock inside. 21But others didn’t pay attention to what the Lord had said. They left their slaves and livestock outside.
22Then the Lord spoke to Moses. He said, “Reach out your hand toward the sky. Then hail will fall all over Egypt. It will beat down on people and animals alike. It will strike everything growing in the fields of Egypt.” 23Moses reached out his walking stick toward the sky. Then the Lord sent thunder and hail. Lightning flashed down to the ground. The Lord rained hail on the land of Egypt. 24Hail fell and lightning flashed back and forth. It was the worst storm in Egypt’s entire history. 25Hail struck everything in the fields all over Egypt. It fell on people and animals alike. It beat down everything growing in the fields. It tore all the leaves off the trees. 26The only place it didn’t hail was in the area of Goshen. That’s where the people of Israel were.
27Then Pharaoh sent for Moses and Aaron. “This time I’ve sinned,” he said to them. “The Lord has done what is right. I and my people have done what is wrong. 28Pray to the Lord, because we’ve had enough thunder and hail. I’ll let you and your people go. You don’t have to stay here any longer.”
29Moses replied, “When I’ve left the city, I’ll lift up my hands and pray to the Lord. The thunder will stop. There won’t be any more hail. Then you will know that the earth belongs to the Lord. 30But I know that you and your officials still don’t have any respect for the Lord God.”
31The barley was ripe. The flax was in bloom. So they were both destroyed. 32But the wheat and spelt weren’t destroyed. That’s because they ripen later.
33Then Moses left Pharaoh and went out of the city. Moses lifted up his hands and prayed to the Lord. The thunder and hail stopped. The rain didn’t pour down on the land any longer. 34Pharaoh saw that the rain, hail and thunder had stopped. So he sinned again. He and his officials became stubborn. 35So Pharaoh was stubborn. He wouldn’t let the people of Israel go, just as the Lord had said through Moses.
