Deuteronomy 32
32
1“Give #Deut. 4:26; Ps. 50:4; Is. 1:2ear, O heavens, and I will speak;
And hear, O #Jer. 6:19earth, the words of my mouth.
2Let #Is. 55:10, 11my teaching drop as the rain,
My speech distill as the dew,
#Ps. 72:6As raindrops on the tender herb,
And as showers on the grass.
3For I proclaim the #Deut. 28:58name of the Lord:
#1 Chr. 29:11Ascribe greatness to our God.
4He is #Deut. 32:15, 18, 30; Ps. 18:2the Rock, #2 Sam. 22:31His work is perfect;
For all His ways are justice,
#Deut. 7:9; Is. 65:16; Jer. 10:10A God of truth and #Job 34:10without injustice;
Righteous and upright is He.
5“They#Deut. 4:25; 31:29 have corrupted themselves;
They are not His children,
Because of their blemish:
A #Phil. 2:15perverse and crooked generation.
6Do you thus #Ps. 116:12deal with the Lord,
O foolish and unwise people?
Is He not #Ex. 4:22; Deut. 1:31; Is. 63:16your Father, who #Ps. 74:2bought you?
Has He not #Deut. 32:15made you and established you?
7“Remember#Ps. 44:1 the days of old,
Consider the years of many generations.
#Ex. 12:26; 13:14; Ps. 78:5–8Ask your father, and he will show you;
Your elders, and they will tell you:
8When the Most High #Acts 17:26divided their inheritance to the nations,
When He #Gen. 11:8separated the sons of Adam,
He set the boundaries of the peoples
According to the number of the children of Israel.
9For #Ex. 19:5the Lord’s portion is His people;
Jacob is the place of His inheritance.
10“He found him #Jer. 2:6; Hos. 13:5in a desert land
And in the wasteland, a howling wilderness;
He encircled him, He instructed him,
He #Ps. 17:8; Prov. 7:2; Zech. 2:8kept him as the apple of His eye.
11#Is. 31:5As an eagle stirs up its nest,
Hovers over its young,
Spreading out its wings, taking them up,
Carrying them on its wings,
12So the Lord alone led him,
And there was no foreign god with him.
13“He#Is. 58:14 made him ride in the heights of the earth,
That he might eat the produce of the fields;
He made him draw honey from the rock,
And oil from the flinty rock;
14Curds from the cattle, and milk of the flock,
#Ps. 81:16With fat of lambs;
And rams of the breed of Bashan, and goats,
With the choicest wheat;
And you drank wine, the #Gen. 49:11blood of the grapes.
15“But Jeshurun grew fat and kicked;
#Deut. 31:20You grew fat, you grew thick,
You are obese!
Then he #Is. 1:4forsook God who #Is. 51:13made him,
And scornfully esteemed the #Ps. 95:1Rock of his salvation.
16#Ps. 78:58; 1 Cor. 10:22They provoked Him to jealousy with foreign gods;
With abominations they provoked Him to anger.
17#Rev. 9:20They sacrificed to demons, not to God,
To gods they did not know,
To new gods, new arrivals
That your fathers did not fear.
18#Is. 17:10Of the Rock who begot you, you are unmindful,
And have #Jer. 2:32forgotten the God who fathered you.
19“And#Judg. 2:14 when the Lord saw it, He spurned them,
Because of the provocation of His sons and His daughters.
20And He said: ‘I will hide My face from them,
I will see what their end will be,
For they are a perverse generation,
#Matt. 17:17Children in whom is no faith.
21#Ps. 78:58They have provoked Me to jealousy by what is not God;
They have moved Me to anger #Ps. 31:6by their foolish idols.
But #Rom. 10:19I will provoke them to jealousy by those who are not a nation;
I will move them to anger by a foolish nation.
22For #Num. 16:33–35; Ps. 18:7, 8; Lam. 4:11a fire is kindled in My anger,
And shall burn to the lowest hell;
It shall consume the earth with her increase,
And set on fire the foundations of the mountains.
23‘I will #Ex. 32:12; Deut. 29:21, 24heap disasters on them;
#Ps. 7:12, 13I will spend My arrows on them.
24They shall be wasted with hunger,
Devoured by pestilence and bitter destruction;
I will also send against them the #Lev. 26:22teeth of beasts,
With the poison of serpents of the dust.
25The sword shall destroy outside;
There shall be terror within
For the young man and virgin,
The nursing child with the man of gray hairs.
26#Ezek. 20:23I would have said, “I will dash them in pieces,
I will make the memory of them to cease from among men,”
27Had I not feared the wrath of the enemy,
Lest their adversaries should misunderstand,
Lest they should say, #Is. 10:12–15“Our hand is high;
And it is not the Lord who has done all this.” ’
28“For they are a nation void of counsel,
Nor is there any understanding in them.
29#Ps. 81:13; (Luke 19:42)Oh, that they were wise, that they understood this,
That they would consider their #Deut. 31:29latter end!
30How could one chase a thousand,
And two put ten thousand to flight,
Unless their Rock #Judg. 2:14; Ps. 44:12had sold them,
And the Lord had surrendered them?
31For their rock is not like our Rock,
#(1 Sam. 4:7, 8; Jer. 40:2, 3)Even our enemies themselves being judges.
32For #Is. 1:8–10their vine is of the vine of Sodom
And of the fields of Gomorrah;
Their grapes are grapes of gall,
Their clusters are bitter.
33Their wine is #Ps. 58:4the poison of serpents,
And the cruel #Rom. 3:13venom of cobras.
34‘Is this not #(Jer. 2:22)laid up in store with Me,
Sealed up among My treasures?
35#Ps. 94:1; Rom. 12:19; Heb. 10:30Vengeance is Mine, and recompense;
Their foot shall slip in due time;
#2 Pet. 2:3For the day of their calamity is at hand,
And the things to come hasten upon them.’
36“For#Ps. 135:14; Heb. 10:30 the Lord will judge His people
#Ps. 106:45; Jer. 31:20And have compassion on His servants,
When He sees that their power is gone,
And #2 Kin. 14:26there is no one remaining, bond or free.
37He will say: #Judg. 10:14; Jer. 2:28‘Where are their gods,
The rock in which they sought refuge?
38Who ate the fat of their sacrifices,
And drank the wine of their drink offering?
Let them rise and help you,
And be your refuge.
39‘Now see that #Is. 41:4; 43:10I, even I, am He,
And #Deut. 32:12; Is. 45:5there is no God besides Me;
#1 Sam. 2:6; Ps. 68:20I kill and I make alive;
I wound and I heal;
Nor is there any who can deliver from My hand.
40For I raise My hand to heaven,
And say, “As I live forever,
41#Is. 1:24; 66:16; Jer. 50:28–32If I whet My glittering sword,
And My hand takes hold on judgment,
I will render vengeance to My enemies,
And repay those who hate Me.
42I will make My arrows drunk with blood,
And My sword shall devour flesh,
With the blood of the slain and the captives,
From the heads of the leaders of the enemy.” ’
43“Rejoice,#Rom. 15:10 O Gentiles, with His people;
For He will #2 Kin. 9:7; Rev. 6:10; 19:2avenge the blood of His servants,
And render vengeance to His adversaries;
He #Ps. 65:3; 79:9; 85:1will provide atonement for His land and His people.”
44So Moses came with Joshua the son of Nun and spoke all the words of this song in the hearing of the people. 45Moses finished speaking all these words to all Israel, 46and he said to them: #Ezek. 40:4; 44:5“Set your hearts on all the words which I testify among you today, which you shall command your #Deut. 11:19children to be careful to observe—all the words of this law. 47For it is not a futile thing for you, because it is your #Deut. 8:3; 30:15–20life, and by this word you shall prolong your days in the land which you cross over the Jordan to possess.”
Moses to Die on Mount Nebo
48Then the Lord spoke to Moses that very same day, saying: 49#Num. 27:12–14; Deut. 3:27“Go up this mountain of the Abarim, Mount Nebo, which is in the land of Moab, across from Jericho; view the land of Canaan, which I give to the children of Israel as a possession; 50and die on the mountain which you ascend, and be gathered to your people, just as #Num. 20:25, 28; 33:38Aaron your brother died on Mount Hor and was gathered to his people; 51because #Num. 20:11–13you trespassed against Me among the children of Israel at the waters of Meribah Kadesh, in the Wilderness of Zin, because you #Lev. 10:3did not hallow Me in the midst of the children of Israel. 52#Num. 27:12; Deut. 34:1–5Yet you shall see the land before you, though you shall not go there, into the land which I am giving to the children of Israel.”

Deuteronomy 32
32
1“Earth and sky, hear my words,
listen closely to what I say.
2My teaching will fall like drops of rain
and form on the earth like dew.
My words will fall like showers on young plants,
like gentle rain on tender grass.
3I will praise the name of the LORD,
and his people will tell of his greatness.
4“The LORD is your mighty defender,
perfect and just in all his ways;
Your God is faithful and true;
he does what is right and fair.
5But you are unfaithful, unworthy to be his people,#32.5 Probable text But you… people; Hebrew unclear.
a sinful and deceitful nation.
6Is this the way you should treat the LORD,
you foolish, senseless people?
He is your father, your Creator,
he made you into a nation.
7“Think of the past, of the time long ago;
ask your parents to tell you what happened,
ask the old people to tell of the past.
8 #
Acts 17.26
The Most High assigned nations their lands;
he determined where peoples should live.
He assigned to each nation a heavenly being,
9but Jacob's descendants he chose for himself.
10“He found them wandering through the desert,
a desolate, windswept wilderness.
He protected them and cared for them,
as he would protect himself.
11Like an eagle teaching its young to fly,#32.11 teaching its young to fly; or watching over its young.
catching them safely on its spreading wings,
the LORD kept Israel from falling.
12The LORD alone led his people
without the help of a foreign god.
13“He let them rule the highlands,
and they ate what grew in the fields.
They found wild honey among the rocks;
their olive trees flourished in stony ground.
14Their cows and goats gave plenty of milk;
they had the best sheep, goats, and cattle,
the finest wheat, and the choicest wine.
15“The LORD's people grew rich, but rebellious;
they were fat and stuffed with food.
They abandoned God their Creator
and rejected their mighty saviour.
16Their idolatry made the LORD jealous;
the evil they did made him angry.
17 #
1 Cor 10.20
They sacrificed to gods that are not real,
new gods their ancestors had never known,
gods that Israel had never obeyed,
18They forgot their God, their mighty saviour,
the one who had given them life.
19“When the LORD saw this, he was angry
and rejected his sons and daughters.
20‘I will no longer help them,’ he said;
‘then I will see what happens to them,
those stubborn, unfaithful people.
21 #
1 Cor 10.22; Rom 10.19 With their idols they have made me angry,
jealous with their so-called gods,
gods that are really not gods.
So I will use a so-called nation to make them angry;
I will make them jealous with a nation of fools.
22My anger will flame up like fire
and burn everything on earth.
It will reach to the world below#32.22 the world below: This refers to the world of the dead.
and consume the roots of the mountains.
23“ ‘I will bring on them endless disasters
and use all my arrows against them.
24They will die from hunger and fever;
they will die from terrible diseases.
I will send wild animals to attack them,
and poisonous snakes to bite them.
25War will bring death in the streets;
terrors will strike in the homes.
Young men and young women will die;
neither babies nor old people will be spared.
26I would have destroyed them completely,
so that no one would remember them.
27But I could not let their enemies boast
that they had defeated my people,
when it was I myself who had crushed them.’
28“Israel is a nation without sense;
they have no wisdom at all.
29They fail to see why they were defeated;
they cannot understand what happened.
30Why were a thousand defeated by one,
and 10,000 by only two?
The LORD, their God, had abandoned them;
their mighty God had given them up.
31Their enemies know that their own gods are weak,
not mighty like Israel's God.
32Their enemies, corrupt as Sodom and Gomorrah,
are like vines that bear bitter and poisonous grapes,
33like wine made from the venom of snakes.
34“The LORD remembers what their enemies have done;
he waits for the right time to punish them.
35 #
Rom 12.19; Heb 10.30 The LORD will take revenge and punish them;
the time will come when they will fall;
the day of their doom is near.
36 #
Ps 135.14
The LORD will rescue his people
when he sees that their strength is gone.
He will have mercy on those who serve him,
when he sees how helpless they are.
37Then the LORD will ask his people,
‘Where are those mighty gods you trusted?
38You fed them with the fat of your sacrifices
and offered them wine to drink.
Let them come and help you now;
let them run to your rescue.
39“ ‘I, and I alone, am God;
no other god is real.
I kill and I give life, I wound and I heal,
and no one can oppose what I do.
40As surely as I am the living God,
I raise my hand and I vow
41that I will sharpen my flashing sword
and see that justice is done.
I will take revenge on my enemies
and punish those who hate me.
42My arrows will drip with their blood,
and my sword will kill all who oppose me.
I will spare no one who fights against me;
even the wounded and prisoners will die.’
43 #
Rom 15.10; Rev 19.2 “Nations, you must praise the LORD's people —
he punishes all who kill them.
He takes revenge on his enemies
and forgives the sins of his people.”
44Moses and Joshua son of Nun recited this song, so that the people of Israel could hear it.
Moses' Final Instructions
45When Moses had finished giving God's teachings to the people, 46he said, “Make sure you obey all these commands that I have given you today. Repeat them to your children, so that they may faithfully obey all God's teachings. 47These teachings are not empty words; they are your very life. Obey them and you will live long in that land across the Jordan that you are about to occupy.”
48 #
Num 27.12–14; Deut 3.23–27 That same day the LORD said to Moses, 49“Go to the Abarim Mountains in the land of Moab opposite the city of Jericho; climb Mount Nebo and look at the land of Canaan that I am about to give the people of Israel. 50You will die on that mountain as your brother Aaron died on Mount Hor, 51because both of you were unfaithful to me in the presence of the people of Israel. When you were at the waters of Meribah, near the town of Kadesh in the wilderness of Zin, you dishonoured me in the presence of the people. 52You will look at the land from a distance, but you will not enter the land that I am giving the people of Israel.”
