II Samuel 22
22
Praise for God’s Deliverance
1Then David #1 Chr. 20:8spoke to the Lord the words of this song, on the day when the Lord had #Ex. 15:1; Deut. 31:30; Judg. 5:1delivered him from the hand of all his enemies, and from the hand of Saul. 2And he #Ps. 18:title; 34:19said:
#Ps. 18“The Lord is my rock and my #Deut. 32:4; 1 Sam. 2:2fortress and my deliverer;
3The God of my strength, #Ps. 91:2in whom I will trust;
My #Ps. 7:1; Heb. 2:13shield and the #Gen. 15:1; Deut. 33:29; Ps. 84:11horn of my salvation,
My #Luke 1:69stronghold and my #Prov. 18:10refuge;
My Savior, You save me from violence.
4I will call upon the Lord, who is worthy to be praised;
So shall I be saved from my enemies.
5“When the waves of death surrounded me,
The floods of ungodliness made me afraid.
6The #Ps. 9:9; 46:1, 7, 11; Jer. 16:19sorrows of Sheol surrounded me;
The snares of death confronted me.
7In my distress #Ps. 116:3I called upon the Lord,
And cried out to my God;
He #Ps. 116:4; 120:1heard my voice from His temple,
And my cry entered His ears.
8“Then #Ex. 3:7; Ps. 34:6, 15the earth shook and trembled;
#Judg. 5:4; Ps. 77:18; 97:4The foundations of heaven quaked and were shaken,
Because He was angry.
9Smoke went up from His nostrils,
And devouring #Job 26:11fire from His mouth;
Coals were kindled by it.
10He #Deut. 32:22; Ps. 97:3, 4; Heb. 12:29bowed the heavens also, and came down
With #Ex. 19:16–20; Is. 64:1darkness under His feet.
11He rode upon a cherub, and flew;
And He was seen #Ex. 20:21upon the wings of the wind.
12He made #Ps. 104:3darkness canopies around Him,
Dark waters and thick clouds of the skies.
13From the brightness before Him
Coals of fire were kindled.
14“The Lord #Job 36:29; Ps. 97:2thundered from heaven,
And the Most High uttered His voice.
15He sent out #1 Sam. 2:10; Job 37:2–5; Ps. 29:3arrows and scattered them;
Lightning bolts, and He vanquished them.
16Then the channels of the sea #Deut. 32:23; Josh. 10:10; 1 Sam. 7:10; Ps. 7:13were seen,
The foundations of the world were uncovered,
At the #Nah. 1:4rebuke of the Lord,
At the blast of the breath of His nostrils.
17“He#Ex. 15:8 sent from above, He took me,
He drew me out of many waters.
18He delivered me from my strong enemy,
From those who hated me;
For they were too strong for me.
19They confronted me in the day of my calamity,
But the Lord was my #Ps. 144:7; Is. 43:2support.
20#Is. 10:20He also brought me out into a broad place;
He delivered me because He #Ps. 31:8; 118:5delighted in me.
21“The#2 Sam. 15:26 Lord rewarded me according to my righteousness;
According to the #1 Sam. 26:23; (Ps. 7:8)cleanness of my hands
He has recompensed me.
22For I have #(Job 17:9); Ps. 24:4kept the ways of the Lord,
And have not wickedly departed from my God.
23For all His #Gen. 18:19; 2 Chr. 34:33; Ps. 119:3judgments were before me;
And as for His statutes, I did not depart from them.
24I was also #(Deut. 6:6–9; 7:12); Ps. 119:30, 102blameless before Him,
And I kept myself from my iniquity.
25Therefore #Gen. 6:9; 7:1; Job 1:1; (Eph. 1:4; Col. 1:21, 22)the Lord has recompensed me according to my righteousness,
According to my cleanness in His eyes.
26“With #2 Sam. 22:21the merciful You will show Yourself merciful;
With a blameless man You will show Yourself blameless;
27With the pure You will show Yourself pure;
And #(Matt. 5:7)with the devious You will show Yourself shrewd.
28You will save the #(Lev. 26:23, 24; Rom. 1:28)humble people;
But Your eyes are on #Ps. 72:12the haughty, that You may bring them down.
29“For You are my #Job 40:11lamp, O Lord;
The Lord shall enlighten my darkness.
30For by You I can run against a troop;
By my God I can leap over a #Ps. 119:105; 132:17wall.
31As for God, #2 Sam. 5:6–8His way is perfect;
#(Deut. 32:4); Dan. 4:37; (Matt. 5:48)The word of the Lord is proven;
He is a shield to all who trust in Him.
32“For #Ps. 12:6; (Prov. 30:5)who is God, except the Lord?
And who is a rock, except our God?
33God is my #Is. 45:5, 6strength and power,
And He #Ps. 27:1makes my way #(Heb. 13:21)perfect.
34He makes my feet #Ps. 101:2, 6like the feet of deer,
And #2 Sam. 2:18; Hab. 3:19sets me on my high places.
35He teaches my hands to make war,
So that my arms can bend a bow of bronze.
36“You have also given me the shield of Your salvation;
Your gentleness has made me great.
37You #Is. 33:16enlarged my path under me;
So my feet did not slip.
38“I have pursued my enemies and destroyed them;
Neither did I turn back again till they were destroyed.
39And I have destroyed them and wounded them,
So that they could not rise;
They have fallen #2 Sam. 22:20; Prov. 4:12under my feet.
40For You have #Mal. 4:3armed me with strength for the battle;
You have subdued under me #(Ps. 18:32)those who rose against me.
41You have also given me the #(Ps. 44:5)necks of my enemies,
So that I destroyed those who hated me.
42They looked, but there was none to save;
Even #Gen. 49:8; Josh. 10:24to the Lord, but He did not answer them.
43Then I beat them as fine #1 Sam. 28:6; Prov. 1:28; Is. 1:15as the dust of the earth;
I trod them #2 Kin. 13:7; Ps. 18:42like dirt in the streets,
And I spread them out.
44“You#Is. 10:6 have also delivered me from the strivings of my people;
You have kept me as the #2 Sam. 3:1head of the nations.
#Deut. 28:13A people I have not known shall serve me.
45The foreigners submit to me;
As soon as they hear, they obey me.
46The foreigners fade away,
And come frightened #(Is. 55:5)from their hideouts.
47“The Lord lives!
Blessed be my Rock!
Let God be exalted,
The #1 Sam. 14:11; (Mic. 7:17)Rock of my salvation!
48It is God who avenges me,
And #(2 Sam. 22:3); Ps. 89:26subdues the peoples under me;
49He delivers me from my enemies.
You also lift me up above those who rise against me;
You have delivered me from the #1 Sam. 24:12; Ps. 144:2violent man.
50Therefore I will give thanks to You, O Lord, among #Ps. 140:1, 4, 11the Gentiles,
And sing praises to Your #2 Sam. 8:1–14name.
51“He#Ps. 57:7; Rom. 15:9 is the tower of salvation to His king,
And shows mercy to His #Ps. 144:10anointed,
To David and #Ps. 89:20his descendants forevermore.”

David's Song of Victory
(Ps 18)
1When the LORD saved David from Saul and his other enemies, David sang this song to the LORD:
2The LORD is my protector;
he is my strong fortress.
3My God is my protection,
and with him I am safe.
He protects me like a shield;
he defends me and keeps me safe.
He is my saviour;
he protects me and saves me from violence.
4I call to the LORD,
and he saves me from my enemies.
Praise the LORD!
5The waves of death were all round me;
the waves of destruction rolled over me.
6The danger of death was round me,
and the grave set its trap for me.
7In my trouble I called to the LORD;
I called to my God for help.
In his temple he heard my voice;
he listened to my cry for help.
8Then the earth trembled and shook;
the foundations of the sky rocked and quivered
because God was angry!
9Smoke poured out of his nostrils,
a consuming flame and burning coals from his mouth.
10He tore the sky apart and came down,
with a dark cloud under his feet.
11He flew swiftly on his winged creature;#22.11 winged creature: See Word List.
he travelled on the wings of the wind.
12He covered himself with darkness;
thick clouds, full of#22.12 Some ancient translations (and see Ps 18.11) full of; Hebrew unclear. water, surrounded him;
13burning coals flamed up from the lightning before him.
14Then the LORD thundered from the sky,
and the voice of Almighty God was heard.
15He shot his arrows and scattered his enemies;
with flashes of lightning he sent them running.
16The floor of the ocean was laid bare,
and the foundations of the earth were uncovered
when the LORD rebuked his enemies
and roared at them in anger.
17The LORD reached down from above and took hold of me;
he pulled me out of the deep waters.
18He rescued me from my powerful enemies
and from all those who hate me —
they were too strong for me.
19When I was in trouble, they attacked me,
but the LORD protected me.
20He helped me out of danger;
he saved me because he was pleased with me.
21The LORD rewards me because I do what is right;
he blesses me because I am innocent.
22I have obeyed the law of the LORD;
I have not turned away from my God.
23I have observed all his laws;
I have not disobeyed his commands.
24He knows that I am faultless,
that I have kept myself from doing wrong.
25And so he rewards me because I do what is right,
because he knows that I am innocent.
26O LORD, you are faithful to those who are faithful to you,
and completely good to those#22.26 Probable text (see Ps 18.25) those; Hebrew the strong. who are perfect.
27You are pure to those who are pure,
but hostile to those who are wicked.
28You save those who are humble,
but you humble those who are proud.
29You, LORD, are my light;
you dispel my darkness.
30You give me strength to attack my enemies
and power to overcome their defences.
31This God — how perfect are his deeds,
how dependable his words!
He is like a shield
for all who seek his protection.
32The LORD alone is God;
God alone is our defence.
33This God is my strong refuge;
he makes#22.33 Probable text (see Ps 18.32) he makes; Hebrew unclear. my pathway safe.
34 #
Hab 3.19
He makes me sure-footed as a deer;
he keeps me safe on the mountains.
35He trains me for battle,
so that I can use the strongest bow.
36O LORD, you protect me and save me;
your help has made me great.
37You have kept me from being captured,
and I have never fallen.
38I pursue my enemies and defeat them;
I do not stop until I destroy them.
39I strike them down, and they cannot rise;
they lie defeated before me.
40You give me strength for the battle
and victory over my enemies.
41You make my enemies run from me;
I destroy those who hate me.
42They look for help, but no one saves them;
they call to the LORD, but he does not answer.
43I crush them, and they become like dust;
I trample on them like mud in the streets.
44You saved me from my rebellious people
and maintained my rule over the nations;
people I did not know have now become my subjects.
45Foreigners bow before me;
when they hear me, they obey.
46They lose their courage
and come trembling#22.46 Probable text (see Ps 18.45) come trembling; Hebrew come ready to fight. from their fortresses.
47The LORD lives! Praise my defender!
Proclaim the greatness of the strong God who saves me!
48He gives me victory over my enemies;
he subdues the nations under me
49and saves me from my foes.
O LORD, you give me victory over my enemies
and protect me from violent men.
50 #
Rom 15.9
And so I praise you among the nations;
I sing praises to you.
51God gives great victories to his king;
he shows constant love to the one he has chosen,
to David and his descendants for ever.
