I John 3
3
1Behold #(John 3:16; Eph. 2:4–7; 1 John 4:10)what manner of love the Father has bestowed on us, that #(John 1:12)we should be called children of God! Therefore the world does not know us, #John 15:18, 21; 16:3because it did not know Him. 2Beloved, #(Is. 56:5; Rom. 8:15, 16)now we are children of God; and #(Rom. 8:18, 19, 23)it has not yet been revealed what we shall be, but we know that when He is revealed, #Rom. 8:29; 2 Pet. 1:4we shall be like Him, for #(Ps. 16:11)we shall see Him as He is. 3#1 John 4:17And everyone who has this hope in Him purifies himself, just as He is pure.
Sin and the Child of God
4Whoever commits sin also commits lawlessness, and #Rom. 4:15; 1 John 5:17sin is lawlessness. 5And you know #1 John 1:2; 3:8that He was manifested #(Is. 53:5, 6); John 1:29; (2 Cor. 5:21; Heb. 9:26)to take away our sins, and #(2 Cor. 5:21); 1 John 2:29in Him there is no sin. 6Whoever abides in Him does not sin. Whoever sins has neither seen Him nor known Him.
7Little children, let no one deceive you. He who practices righteousness is righteous, just as He is righteous. 8#Matt. 13:38; John 8:44; 1 John 3:10He who sins is of the devil, for the devil has sinned from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, #Luke 10:18; (Heb. 2:14)that He might destroy the works of the devil. 9Whoever has been #John 1:3; 3:3; (1 John 2:29; 4:7; 5:1, 4, 18); 3 John 11born of God does not sin, for #1 Pet. 1:23His seed remains in him; and he cannot sin, because he has been born of God.
The Imperative of Love
10In this the children of God and the children of the devil are manifest: Whoever does not practice righteousness is not of God, nor is he who does not love his brother. 11For this is the message that you heard from the beginning, #(John 13:34; 15:12); 1 John 4:7, 11, 21; 2 John 5that we should love one another, 12not as #Gen. 4:4, 8Cain who was of the wicked one and murdered his brother. And why did he murder him? Because his works were evil and his brother’s righteous.
13Do not marvel, my brethren, if #(John 15:18; 17:14)the world hates you. 14We know that we have passed from death to life, because we love the brethren. He who does not love his brother abides in death. 15#Matt. 5:21; John 8:44Whoever hates his brother is a murderer, and you know that #(Gal. 5:20, 21; Rev. 21:8)no murderer has eternal life abiding in him.
The Outworking of Love
16#(John 3:16)By this we know love, #John 10:11; 15:13; Gal. 2:20because He laid down His life for us. And we also ought to lay down our lives for the brethren. 17But #Deut. 15:7whoever has this world’s goods, and sees his brother in need, and shuts up his heart from him, how does the love of God abide in him?
18My little children, #Ezek. 33:31let us not love in word or in tongue, but in deed and in truth. 19And by this we know #John 18:37that we are of the truth, and shall assure our hearts before Him. 20#(1 Cor. 4:4, 5)For if our heart condemns us, God is greater than our heart, and knows all things. 21Beloved, if our heart does not condemn us, #(Heb. 10:22; 1 John 2:28; 5:14)we have confidence toward God. 22And #Ps. 34:15; (John 15:7); 1 John 5:14, 15whatever we ask we receive from Him, because we keep His commandments #John 8:29; Heb. 13:21and do those things that are pleasing in His sight. 23And this is His commandment: that we should believe on the name of His Son Jesus Christ #Matt. 22:39and love one another, as He gave us commandment.
The Spirit of Truth and the Spirit of Error
24Now #John 14:23he who keeps His commandments #John 14:21; 17:21abides in Him, and He in him. And #John 14:17; Rom. 8:9, 14, 16; 1 Thess. 4:8; 1 John 4:13by this we know that He abides in us, by the Spirit whom He has given us.

1 John 3
3
1See ye what love the Father hath given to us, that children of God we may be called; because of this the world doth not know us, because it did not know Him;
2beloved, now, children of God are we, and it was not yet manifested what we shall be, and we have known that if he may be manifested, like him we shall be, because we shall see him as he is;
3and every one who is having this hope on him, doth purify himself, even as he is pure.
4Every one who is doing the sin, the lawlessness also he doth do, and the sin is the lawlessness,
5and ye have known that he was manifested that our sins he may take away, and sin is not in him;
6every one who is remaining in him doth not sin; every one who is sinning, hath not seen him, nor known him.
7Little children, let no one lead you astray; he who is doing the righteousness is righteous, even as he is righteous,
8he who is doing the sin, of the devil he is, because from the beginning the devil doth sin; for this was the Son of God manifested, that he may break up the works of the devil;
9every one who hath been begotten of God, sin he doth not, because his seed in him doth remain, and he is not able to sin, because of God he hath been begotten.
10In this manifest are the children of God, and the children of the devil; every one who is not doing righteousness, is not of God, and he who is not loving his brother,
11because this is the message that ye did hear from the beginning, that we may love one another,
12not as Cain — of the evil one he was, and he did slay his brother, and wherefore did he slay him? because his works were evil, and those of his brother righteous.
13Do not wonder, my brethren, if the world doth hate you;
14we — we have known that we have passed out of the death to the life, because we love the brethren; he who is not loving the brother doth remain in the death.
15Every one who is hating his brother — a man-killer he is, and ye have known that no man-killer hath life age-during in him remaining,
16in this we have known the love, because he for us his life did lay down, and we ought for the brethren the lives to lay down;
17and whoever may have the goods of the world, and may view his brother having need, and may shut up his bowels from him — how doth the love of God remain in him?
18My little children, may we not love in word nor in tongue, but in word and in truth!
19and in this we know that of the truth we are, and before Him we shall assure our hearts,
20because if our heart may condemn — because greater is God than our heart, and He doth know all things.
21Beloved, if our heart may not condemn us, we have boldness toward God,
22and whatever we may ask, we receive from Him, because His commands we keep, and the things pleasing before Him we do,
23and this is His command, that we may believe in the name of His Son Jesus Christ, and may love one another, even as He did give command to us,
24and he who is keeping His commands, in Him he doth remain, and He in him; and in this we know that He doth remain in us, from the Spirit that He gave us.
