Psalms 52
52
Psalm 52#In Hebrew texts 52:1-9 is numbered 52:3-11.
For the director of music. A maskil#Title: Probably a literary or musical term of David. When Doeg the Edomite had gone to Saul and told him: ‘David has gone to the house of Ahimelek.’
1Why do you boast of evil, you mighty hero?
Why do you boast all day long,
you who are a disgrace in the eyes of God?
2You who practise deceit,
your tongue plots destruction;
it is like a sharpened razor.
3You love evil rather than good,
falsehood rather than speaking the truth.#52:3 The Hebrew has Selah (a word of uncertain meaning) here and at the end of verse 5.
4You love every harmful word,
you deceitful tongue!
5Surely God will bring you down to everlasting ruin:
he will snatch you up and pluck you from your tent;
he will uproot you from the land of the living.
6The righteous will see and fear;
they will laugh at you, saying,
7‘Here now is the man
who did not make God his stronghold
but trusted in his great wealth
and grew strong by destroying others!’
8But I am like an olive tree
flourishing in the house of God;
I trust in God’s unfailing love
for ever and ever.
9For what you have done I will always praise you
in the presence of your faithful people.
And I will hope in your name,
for your name is good.

Psalms 52
52
For the music director. A psalm (maskil) of David, concerning the time when Doeg the Edomite went to Saul and told him, “David has gone to the home of Ahimelech.”
1You great man, why do you boast about the evil things you've done? God's trustworthy love lasts all day long.#52:1 “God's trustworthy love lasts all day long.” This is the meaning of the Hebrew text but the thought seems out of place here.
2You plot to make people suffer; your words cut like a sharp razor, you liar!
3You love evil more than good, and telling lies more than speaking the truth. Selah.
4You love slanderous words that destroy others, you liar!
5But God will strike you down so hard you'll never get up. He will grab hold of you and drag you from your tent. He will tear you out of the land of the living. Selah.
6Those who do right will see all this. They will be astonished and laugh, saying,
7“See what happens to those who don't go to God for help but instead rely on their great wealth and strength—which only brings their destruction!”
8But I'm like an olive tree growing strongly in God's house. I trust in God's unfailing love forever and ever.
9I will praise you forever, God, for all you have done. In the presence of your trustworthy people, I will place my hope in the kind of person you are,#52:9. Literally, “in your name.” for you are good.
