Mark 11

Jesus comes to Jerusalem as king
1As they approached Jerusalem and came to Bethphage and Bethany at the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two of his disciples, 2saying to them, ‘Go to the village ahead of you, and just as you enter it, you will find a colt tied there, which no-one has ever ridden. Untie it and bring it here. 3If anyone asks you, “Why are you doing this?” say, “The Lord needs it and will send it back here shortly.” ’
4They went and found a colt outside in the street, tied at a doorway. As they untied it, 5some people standing there asked, ‘What are you doing, untying that colt?’ 6They answered as Jesus had told them to, and the people let them go. 7When they brought the colt to Jesus and threw their cloaks over it, he sat on it. 8Many people spread their cloaks on the road, while others spread branches they had cut in the fields. 9Those who went ahead and those who followed shouted,
‘Hosanna!#11:9 A Hebrew expression meaning ‘Save!’ which became an exclamation of praise; also in verse 10’
‘Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!’#11:9 Psalm 118:25,26
10‘Blessed is the coming kingdom of our father David!’
‘Hosanna in the highest heaven!’
11Jesus entered Jerusalem and went into the temple courts. He looked around at everything, but since it was already late, he went out to Bethany with the Twelve.
Jesus curses a fig-tree and clears the temple courts
12The next day as they were leaving Bethany, Jesus was hungry. 13Seeing in the distance a fig-tree in leaf, he went to find out if it had any fruit. When he reached it, he found nothing but leaves, because it was not the season for figs. 14Then he said to the tree, ‘May no-one ever eat fruit from you again.’ And his disciples heard him say it.
15On reaching Jerusalem, Jesus entered the temple courts and began driving out those who were buying and selling there. He overturned the tables of the money-changers and the benches of those selling doves, 16and would not allow anyone to carry merchandise through the temple courts. 17And as he taught them, he said, ‘Is it not written: “My house will be called a house of prayer for all nations”#11:17 Isaiah 56:7? But you have made it “a den of robbers”.#11:17 Jer. 7:11’
18The chief priests and the teachers of the law heard this and began looking for a way to kill him, for they feared him, because the whole crowd was amazed at his teaching.
19When evening came, Jesus and his disciples#11:19 Some early manuscripts came, Jesus went out of the city.
20In the morning, as they went along, they saw the fig-tree withered from the roots. 21Peter remembered and said to Jesus, ‘Rabbi, look! The fig-tree you cursed has withered!’
22 ‘Have faith in God,’ Jesus answered. 23‘Truly#11:22,23 Some early manuscripts ‘If you have faith in God,’ Jesus answered, 23 ‘truly I tell you, if anyone says to this mountain, “Go, throw yourself into the sea,” and does not doubt in their heart but believes that what they say will happen, it will be done for them. 24Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours. 25And when you stand praying, if you hold anything against anyone, forgive them, so that your Father in heaven may forgive you your sins.’ 26#11:26 Some manuscripts include here words similar to Matt. 6:15.
The authority of Jesus questioned
27They arrived again in Jerusalem, and while Jesus was walking in the temple courts, the chief priests, the teachers of the law and the elders came to him. 28‘By what authority are you doing these things?’ they asked. ‘And who gave you authority to do this?’
29Jesus replied, ‘I will ask you one question. Answer me, and I will tell you by what authority I am doing these things. 30John’s baptism – was it from heaven, or of human origin? Tell me!’
31They discussed it among themselves and said, ‘If we say, “From heaven,” he will ask, “Then why didn’t you believe him?” 32But if we say, “Of human origin” …’ (They feared the people, for everyone held that John really was a prophet.)
33So they answered Jesus, ‘We don’t know.’
Jesus said, ‘Neither will I tell you by what authority I am doing these things.’

Mark 11

The Triumphal Entry
1When they were nearing Jerusalem, at Bethphage and Bethany near the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two of His disciples, [Matt 21:1-9; Luke 19:29-38; John 12:12-15] 2saying to them, “Go into the #11:2 Probably Bethphage.village in front of you, and immediately as you enter it, you will find a [donkey’s] #11:2 A colt that had not been used was considered holy by the Jews and was fit to carry a king.colt tied, which has never been ridden by anyone; untie it and bring it here. 3If anyone asks you, ‘Why are you doing this?’ say, ‘The Lord needs it’; and immediately he will send it here.” 4So they went away [to the village] and found a colt tied outside at a gate in the street, and they untied it. 5Some of the people who were standing there said to them, “What are you doing, untying the colt?” 6They replied to them just as Jesus had directed, and they allowed them to go. 7They brought the colt to Jesus and put their coats on it, and He sat on it. 8And many [of the people] spread their coats on the road [as an act of tribute and homage before a new king], and others [scattered a layer of] leafy branches which they had cut from the fields [honoring Him as Messiah]. [2 Kin 9:13] 9Those who went in front and those who were following [Him] were shouting [in joy and praise],
“Hosanna (#11:9 Or Save now.Save, I pray)!
Blessed (praised, glorified) is He who comes in the name of the Lord! [Ps 118:26]
10“Blessed is the coming kingdom of our father David!
Hosanna in the highest [heaven]!”
11Jesus entered Jerusalem and went to the temple [enclosure]; and after looking around at everything, He left for Bethany with the twelve [disciples], because it was already late [in the day].
12On the next day, when they had left Bethany, He was hungry. [Matt 21:18-22] 13Seeing at a distance a fig tree in leaf, He went to see if He would find anything on it. But He found nothing but leaves, for it was not the season for figs. 14He said to it, “No one will ever eat fruit from you again!” And His disciples were listening [to what He said].
Jesus Drives Moneychangers from the Temple
15Then they came to Jerusalem. And He entered the temple [grounds] and began driving out [with force] the people who were #11:15 These vendors could charge pilgrims inflated prices for animals designated for sacrifice because OT law forbade the use of animals with blemishes or defects (Deut 17:1 etc.), and the religious leaders had dictated even more stringent requirements. The Mishnah declared that one should not enter the temple mount with his staff (walking stick) or wallet, or with his shoes on, or with dust on his feet (according to the Talmud). Carrying merchandise through the temple showed even greater disrespect.merchandise or household wares through the temple [grounds, using the temple area irreverently as a shortcut]. 17He began to teach and say to them, “Is it not written, ‘My house shall be called a house of prayer for all the nations’? But you have made it a robbers’ den.” [Is 56:7; Jer 7:11] 18The chief priests and the scribes heard this and began searching for a way to destroy Him; for they were afraid of Him, since the entire crowd was struck with astonishment at His teaching.
19When evening came, Jesus and His disciples would leave the city.
20In the morning, as they were passing by, the disciples saw that the fig tree had withered away from the roots up. 21And remembering, Peter said to Him, “Rabbi (Master), look! The fig tree which You cursed has withered!” 22Jesus replied, “Have faith in God [constantly]. 23I assure you and most solemnly say to you, whoever says to this mountain, ‘Be lifted up and thrown into the sea!’ and #11:23 Jesus used this moment to emphasize to the disciples that a person’s confident, abiding faith combined with God’s power can produce absolutely amazing results, if the request is in harmony with God’s will. God is fully capable of doing that which man regards as impossible (cf 14:36; James 4:3).does not doubt in his heart [in God’s unlimited power], but believes that what he says is going to take place, it will be done for him [in accordance with God’s will]. [Matt 17:20; Luke 17:6; 1 John 5:14] 24For this reason I am telling you, whatever things you ask for in prayer [in accordance with God’s will], believe [with confident trust] that you have received them, and they will be given to you. 25Whenever you #11:25 Standing was a common posture for prayer among the Jews (see Matt 6:5).stand praying, if you have anything against anyone, forgive him [drop the issue, let it go], so that your Father who is in heaven will also forgive you your transgressions and wrongdoings [against Him and others]. 26#11:26 Early mss do not contain this verse.[But if you do not forgive, neither will your Father in heaven forgive your transgressions.”]
Jesus’ Authority Questioned
27They came again to Jerusalem. And as Jesus was walking in the [courts and porches of the] temple, the #11:27 These three groups composed the Sanhedrin, the Jewish High Court.chief priests, the scribes, and the elders came to Him, [Matt 21:23-27; Luke 20:1-8] 28and began saying to Him, “By what authority are You doing these things, or who gave You this authority to do these things?” 29Jesus said to them, “I will ask you one question, and you answer Me, and then I will tell you by what authority I do these things. 30Was the baptism of John [the Baptist] from heaven [that is, ordained by God] or from men? Answer Me.” 31They began discussing it with each other, saying, “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ He will say, ‘Then why did you not believe him?’ 32But #11:32 Or if we say.shall we say, ‘From men?’ ” —they were afraid [to answer because] of the crowd, for everyone considered John to have been a real prophet. 33So they replied to Jesus, “We do not know.” And Jesus said to them, “Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things.”
