John 11

The death of Lazarus
1Now a man named Lazarus was ill. He was from Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister Martha. 2(This Mary, whose brother Lazarus now lay ill, was the same one who poured perfume on the Lord and wiped his feet with her hair.) 3So the sisters sent word to Jesus, ‘Lord, the one you love is ill.’
4When he heard this, Jesus said, ‘This illness will not end in death. No, it is for God’s glory so that God’s Son may be glorified through it.’ 5Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus. 6So when he heard that Lazarus was ill, he stayed where he was two more days, 7and then he said to his disciples, ‘Let us go back to Judea.’
8‘But Rabbi,’ they said, ‘a short while ago the Jews there tried to stone you, and yet you are going back?’
9Jesus answered, ‘Are there not twelve hours of daylight? Anyone who walks in the day-time will not stumble, for they see by this world’s light. 10It is when a person walks at night that they stumble, for they have no light.’
11After he had said this, he went on to tell them, ‘Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep; but I am going there to wake him up.’
12His disciples replied, ‘Lord, if he sleeps, he will get better.’ 13Jesus had been speaking of his death, but his disciples thought he meant natural sleep.
14So then he told them plainly, ‘Lazarus is dead, 15and for your sake I am glad I was not there, so that you may believe. But let us go to him.’
16Then Thomas (also known as Didymus#11:16 Thomas (Aramaic) and Didymus (Greek) both mean twin.) said to the rest of the disciples, ‘Let us also go, that we may die with him.’
Jesus comforts the sisters of Lazarus
17On his arrival, Jesus found that Lazarus had already been in the tomb for four days. 18Now Bethany was less than two miles#11:18 Or about 3 kilometres from Jerusalem, 19and many Jews had come to Martha and Mary to comfort them in the loss of their brother. 20When Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went out to meet him, but Mary stayed at home.
21‘Lord,’ Martha said to Jesus, ‘if you had been here, my brother would not have died. 22But I know that even now God will give you whatever you ask.’
23Jesus said to her, ‘Your brother will rise again.’
24Martha answered, ‘I know he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day.’
25Jesus said to her, ‘I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die; 26and whoever lives by believing in me will never die. Do you believe this?’
27‘Yes, Lord,’ she replied, ‘I believe that you are the Messiah, the Son of God, who is to come into the world.’
28After she had said this, she went back and called her sister Mary aside. ‘The Teacher is here,’ she said, ‘and is asking for you.’ 29When Mary heard this, she got up quickly and went to him. 30Now Jesus had not yet entered the village, but was still at the place where Martha had met him. 31When the Jews who had been with Mary in the house, comforting her, noticed how quickly she got up and went out, they followed her, supposing she was going to the tomb to mourn there.
32When Mary reached the place where Jesus was and saw him, she fell at his feet and said, ‘Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.’
33When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who had come along with her also weeping, he was deeply moved in spirit and troubled. 34‘Where have you laid him?’ he asked.
‘Come and see, Lord,’ they replied.
35Jesus wept.
36Then the Jews said, ‘See how he loved him!’
37But some of them said, ‘Could not he who opened the eyes of the blind man have kept this man from dying?’
Jesus raises Lazarus from the dead
38Jesus, once more deeply moved, came to the tomb. It was a cave with a stone laid across the entrance. 39‘Take away the stone,’ he said.
‘But, Lord,’ said Martha, the sister of the dead man, ‘by this time there is a bad odour, for he has been there four days.’
40Then Jesus said, ‘Did I not tell you that if you believe, you will see the glory of God?’
41So they took away the stone. Then Jesus looked up and said, ‘Father, I thank you that you have heard me. 42I knew that you always hear me, but I said this for the benefit of the people standing here, that they may believe that you sent me.’
43When he had said this, Jesus called in a loud voice, ‘Lazarus, come out!’ 44The dead man came out, his hands and feet wrapped with strips of linen, and a cloth round his face.
Jesus said to them, ‘Take off the grave clothes and let him go.’
The plot to kill Jesus
45Therefore many of the Jews who had come to visit Mary, and had seen what Jesus did, believed in him. 46But some of them went to the Pharisees and told them what Jesus had done. 47Then the chief priests and the Pharisees called a meeting of the Sanhedrin.
‘What are we accomplishing?’ they asked. ‘Here is this man performing many signs. 48If we let him go on like this, everyone will believe in him, and then the Romans will come and take away both our temple and our nation.’
49Then one of them, named Caiaphas, who was high priest that year, spoke up, ‘You know nothing at all! 50You do not realise that it is better for you that one man die for the people than that the whole nation perish.’
51He did not say this on his own, but as high priest that year he prophesied that Jesus would die for the Jewish nation, 52and not only for that nation but also for the scattered children of God, to bring them together and make them one. 53So from that day on they plotted to take his life.
54Therefore Jesus no longer moved about publicly among the people of Judea. Instead he withdrew to a region near the wilderness, to a village called Ephraim, where he stayed with his disciples.
55When it was almost time for the Jewish Passover, many went up from the country to Jerusalem for their ceremonial cleansing before the Passover. 56They kept looking for Jesus, and as they stood in the temple courts they asked one another, ‘What do you think? Isn’t he coming to the festival at all?’ 57But the chief priests and the Pharisees had given orders that anyone who found out where Jesus was should report it so that they might arrest him.

John 11
1¶ Now a certain man was sick, named Lazarus, of Bethany, the town of Mary and her sister Martha.
2(It was that Mary who anointed the Lord with ointment and wiped his feet with her hair whose brother Lazarus was sick.)
3Therefore his sisters sent unto him, saying, Lord, behold, he whom thou lovest is sick.
4When Jesus heard that, he said, This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God might be glorified thereby.
5Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus.
6When he had heard therefore that he was sick, he abode two days still in the same place where he was.
7Then after that he said to his disciples, Let us go into Judea again.
8 His disciples said unto him, Rabbi, the Jews of late sought to stone thee, and goest thou there again?
9Jesus answered, Are there not twelve hours in the day? If anyone walks in the day, he does not stumble because he sees the light of this world.
10But he who walks in the night stumbles because there is no light in him.
11Having said that he said unto them, Our friend Lazarus sleeps, but I go that I may awake him out of sleep.
12Then his disciples said, Lord, if he sleeps, he shall be saved.
13But Jesus had spoken of his death, and they thought that he had spoken of taking of rest in sleep.
14Then Jesus said unto them plainly, Lazarus has died.
15And I am glad for your sakes that I was not there, in order that ye may believe; nevertheless let us go unto him.
16Then Thomas said, who is called Didymus, unto his fellowdisciples, Let us go also, that we may die with him.
17¶ Then when Jesus came, he found that he had lain in the grave four days already.
18Now Bethany was near unto Jerusalem, about fifteen furlongs off;
19and many of the Jews had come to Martha and Mary to comfort them concerning their brother.
20Then Martha, as soon as she heard that Jesus was coming, went and met him; but Mary sat still in the house.
21Then Martha said unto Jesus, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother would not have died.
22But I know that even now whatsoever thou wilt ask of God, God will give it unto thee.
23Jesus said unto her, Thy brother shall rise again.
24Martha said unto him, I know that he shall rise again in the resurrection in the last day.
25Jesus said unto her, I AM the resurrection and the life; he that believes in me, though he is dead, yet shall he live;
26and whosoever lives and believes in me shall never die. Believest thou this?
27She said unto him, Yes, Lord, I believe that thou art the Christ, the Son of God, who should come into the world.
28And having said this, she went away and called Mary her sister secretly, saying, The Master is come, and calls for thee.
29As soon as she heard that, she arose quickly and came unto him.
30(Now Jesus was not yet come into the town, but was in that place where Martha met him.)
31Then the Jews who were with her in the house and comforted her, when they saw Mary, that she rose up hastily and went out, followed her, saying, She goes unto the grave to weep there.
32Then when Mary was come where Jesus was and saw him, she fell down at his feet, saying unto him, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother would not have died.
33¶ When Jesus therefore saw her weeping and the Jews also weeping who came with her, he became enraged in the Spirit and stirred himself up
34and said, Where have ye laid him? They said unto him, Lord, come and see.
35Jesus wept.
36Then the Jews said, Behold how he loved him!
37And some of them said, Could not this man, who opened the eyes of the blind, have also caused that this man should not have died?
38Jesus therefore, becoming enraged again in himself, came to the grave. It was a cave, and a stone lay upon it.
39Jesus said, Take ye away the stone. Martha, the sister of him that had died, said unto him, Lord, by this time he stinks, for he has been dead four days.
40Jesus said unto her, Did I not say unto thee that if thou wouldest believe thou shalt see the glory of God?
41Then they took away the stone from the place where the dead was laid. And Jesus, lifting up his eyes, said, Father, I thank thee that thou hast heard me.
42And I knew that thou hearest me always, but because of the people who stand by I said it, that they may believe that thou hast sent me.
43And having said these things, he cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come forth.
44Then he that had been dead came forth, bound hand and foot with graveclothes, and his face was bound about with a napkin. Jesus said unto them, Loose him, and let him go.
45¶ Then many of the Jews who had come to Mary and had seen what Jesus did believed on him.
46But some of them went unto the Pharisees and told them what Jesus had done.
47Then the high priests and the Pharisees gathered a council and said, What shall we do? for this man does many signs.
48If we let him thus alone, everyone will believe on him, and the Romans shall come and take away both our place and the nation.
49And one of them, named Caiaphas, being the high priest that same year, said unto them, Ye know nothing at all
50nor consider that it is expedient for us that one man should die for the people, and not that the whole nation be lost.
51And this he spoke not of himself; but being high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus should die for the nation;
52and not for that nation only, but that he should also gather together in one the sons of God that were scattered abroad.
53So that from that day forth they took counsel together to kill him.
54Jesus therefore no longer walked openly among the Jews, but went from there unto a country near to the wilderness into a city called Ephraim and there continued with his disciples.
55And the passover of the Jews was now at hand, and many went out of the country up to Jerusalem before the passover to purify themselves;
56and they sought for Jesus and spoke among themselves as they stood in the temple, What think ye, that he will not come to the feast?
57Now both the high priests and the Pharisees had given a commandment, that if anyone knew where he was he should show it, that they might take him.
