A message to Baruch
1When Baruch son of Neriah wrote on a scroll the words Jeremiah the prophet dictated in the fourth year of Jehoiakim son of Josiah king of Judah, Jeremiah said this to Baruch: 2‘This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says to you, Baruch: 3You said, “Woe to me! The Lord has added sorrow to my pain; I am worn out with groaning and find no rest.” 4But the Lord has told me to say to you, “This is what the Lord says: I will overthrow what I have built and uproot what I have planted, throughout the earth. 5Should you then seek great things for yourself? Do not seek them. For I will bring disaster on all people, declares the Lord, but wherever you go I will let you escape with your life.” ’

A Message for Baruch
1The word that Jeremiah the prophet spoke to Baruch, the son of Neriah, at his writing these words on a scroll from the mouth of Jeremiah, in the fourth year of Jehoiakim, the son of Josiah, the king of Judah, saying,#Literally “to say” 2“Thus says Yahweh, the God of Israel, to you, O Baruch: 3‘You said, “Woe please to me, for Yahweh has added sorrow to my pain. I am weary in my groaning and I do not find rest.” ’ 4Thus you will say to him: ‘Thus says Yahweh, “Look, what I have built I am about to tear down, and what I have planted I am about to pluck up, it is all the land. 5And you, do you seek great things for yourself? Do not seek great things,#Here the direct object is supplied from context in the English translation for look, I am about to bring disaster upon all flesh,” declares#Literally “a declaration of” Yahweh, “but to you I will give your life as booty in all the places where you may go.” ’ ”
