Amos 2
2
1This is what the Lord says:
‘For three sins of Moab,
even for four, I will not relent.
Because he burned to ashes
the bones of Edom’s king,
2I will send fire on Moab
that will consume the fortresses of Kerioth.#2:2 Or of her cities
Moab will go down in great tumult
amid war cries and the blast of the trumpet.
3I will destroy her ruler
and kill all her officials with him,’
says the Lord.
4This is what the Lord says:
‘For three sins of Judah,
even for four, I will not relent.
Because they have rejected the law of the Lord
and have not kept his decrees,
because they have been led astray by false gods,#2:4 Or by lies
the gods#2:4 Or lies their ancestors followed,
5I will send fire on Judah
that will consume the fortresses of Jerusalem.’
Judgment on Israel
6This is what the Lord says:
‘For three sins of Israel,
even for four, I will not relent.
They sell the innocent for silver,
and the needy for a pair of sandals.
7They trample on the heads of the poor
as on the dust of the ground
and deny justice to the oppressed.
Father and son use the same girl
and so profane my holy name.
8They lie down beside every altar
on garments taken in pledge.
In the house of their god
they drink wine taken as fines.
9‘Yet I destroyed the Amorites before them,
though they were tall as the cedars
and strong as the oaks.
I destroyed their fruit above
and their roots below.
10I brought you up out of Egypt
and led you for forty years in the wilderness
to give you the land of the Amorites.
11‘I also raised up prophets from among your children
and Nazirites from among your youths.
Is this not true, people of Israel?’
declares the Lord.
12‘But you made the Nazirites drink wine
and commanded the prophets not to prophesy.
13‘Now then, I will crush you
as a cart crushes when loaded with grain.
14The swift will not escape,
the strong will not muster their strength,
and the warrior will not save his life.
15The archer will not stand his ground,
the fleet-footed soldier will not get away,
and the horseman will not save his life.
16Even the bravest warriors
will flee naked on that day,’
declares the Lord.

Amos 2
1¶ Thus hath the Lord said: For three transgressions of Moab and for the fourth, I will not convert her because she burned the bones of the king of Edom into lime;
2but I will send fire in Moab, and it shall devour the palaces of Kerioth; and Moab shall die in tumult, with shouting and with the sound of the shofar:
3and I will cut off the judge from the midst thereof and will slay all the princes thereof with him, said the Lord.
4Thus hath the Lord said: For three transgressions of Judah and for the fourth, I will not convert her because they have despised the law of the Lord and have not kept his statutes, and their lies caused them to err after which their fathers have walked:
5but I will send fire in Judah, and it shall devour the palaces of Jerusalem.
6Thus hath the Lord said: For three transgressions of Israel and for the fourth, I will not convert her because they sold the righteous for silver and the poor for a pair of shoes,
7desiring that there be dust of the earth upon the head of the poor, and to twist the way of the humble: and the man and his father have gone in unto the same maid, profaning my holy name:
8and they lay themselves down upon clothes laid to pledge by any altar, and they drink the wine of the condemned in the house of their god.
9¶ Yet I destroyed the Amorite before them, whose height was like the height of the cedars, and he was strong as an oak; yet I destroyed his fruit above and his roots beneath.
10Also I brought you up from the land of Egypt and led you forty years through the wilderness that you might possess the land of the Amorite.
11And I raised up of your sons for prophets and of your young men for Nazarites. Is it not even thus, O ye sons of Israel? said the Lord.
12But ye gave the Nazarites wine to drink, and commanded the prophets, saying, Do not prophesy.
13Behold, I will press you in your place, as a cart is pressed that is full of sheaves.
14Therefore the flight shall perish from the swift, and the strong shall not strengthen his force, neither shall the mighty deliver his soul:
15neither shall he that handles the bow stand; and he that is swift of foot shall not escape: neither shall he that rides the horse save his life.
16And he that is strong among the mighty shall flee away naked in that day, said the Lord.
