Psalms 60
60
Psalm 60#In Hebrew texts 60:1-12 is numbered 60:3-14.
For the director of music. To the tune of “The Lily of the Covenant.” A miktam#Title: Probably a literary or musical term of David. For teaching. When he fought Aram Naharaim#Title: That is, Arameans of Northwest Mesopotamia and Aram Zobah,#Title: That is, Arameans of central Syria and when Joab returned and struck down twelve thousand Edomites in the Valley of Salt.
1You have rejected us, God, and burst upon us;
you have been angry—now restore us!
2You have shaken the land and torn it open;
mend its fractures, for it is quaking.
3You have shown your people desperate times;
you have given us wine that makes us stagger.
4But for those who fear you, you have raised a banner
to be unfurled against the bow.#60:4 The Hebrew has Selah (a word of uncertain meaning) here.
5Save us and help us with your right hand,
that those you love may be delivered.
6God has spoken from his sanctuary:
“In triumph I will parcel out Shechem
and measure off the Valley of Sukkoth.
7Gilead is mine, and Manasseh is mine;
Ephraim is my helmet,
Judah is my scepter.
8Moab is my washbasin,
on Edom I toss my sandal;
over Philistia I shout in triumph.”
9Who will bring me to the fortified city?
Who will lead me to Edom?
10Is it not you, God, you who have now rejected us
and no longer go out with our armies?
11Give us aid against the enemy,
for human help is worthless.
12With God we will gain the victory,
and he will trample down our enemies.

A Prayer After a Defeat
For the director of music. To the tune of “Lily of the Agreement.” A miktam of David. For teaching. When David fought the Arameans of Northwest Mesopotamia and Zobah, and when Joab returned and defeated 12,000 Edomites at the Valley of Salt.
1God, you have rejected us and scattered us.
You have been angry, but please come back to us.
2You made the earth shake and crack.
Fix its breaks because it is shaking.
3You have given your people trouble.
You made us unable to walk straight, like people drunk with wine.
4You have raised a banner to gather those who fear you.
Now they can escape the enemy. Selah
5Answer us and save us by your power.
Then the people you love will be rescued.
6God has said from his Temple,
“When I win, I will divide Shechem
and cut up the Valley of Succoth.
7Gilead and Manasseh are mine.
Ephraim is like my helmet.
Judah holds my royal scepter.
8Moab is like my washbowl.
I throw my sandals at Edom.
I shout at Philistia.”
9Who will bring me to the strong, walled city?
Who will lead me to Edom?
10God, surely you have rejected us.
You do not go out with our armies.
11Help us fight the enemy.
Human help is useless.
12But we can win with God’s help.
He will defeat our enemies.
