Psalms 40
40
Psalm 40#In Hebrew texts 40:1-17 is numbered 40:2-18.
For the director of music. Of David. A psalm.
1I waited patiently for the Lord;
he turned to me and heard my cry.
2He lifted me out of the slimy pit,
out of the mud and mire;
he set my feet on a rock
and gave me a firm place to stand.
3He put a new song in my mouth,
a hymn of praise to our God.
Many will see and fear the Lord
and put their trust in him.
4Blessed is the one
who trusts in the Lord,
who does not look to the proud,
to those who turn aside to false gods.#40:4 Or to lies
5Many, Lord my God,
are the wonders you have done,
the things you planned for us.
None can compare with you;
were I to speak and tell of your deeds,
they would be too many to declare.
6Sacrifice and offering you did not desire—
but my ears you have opened#40:6 Hebrew; some Septuagint manuscripts but a body you have prepared for me—
burnt offerings and sin offerings#40:6 Or purification offerings you did not require.
7Then I said, “Here I am, I have come—
it is written about me in the scroll.#40:7 Or come / with the scroll written for me
8I desire to do your will, my God;
your law is within my heart.”
9I proclaim your saving acts in the great assembly;
I do not seal my lips, Lord,
as you know.
10I do not hide your righteousness in my heart;
I speak of your faithfulness and your saving help.
I do not conceal your love and your faithfulness
from the great assembly.
11Do not withhold your mercy from me, Lord;
may your love and faithfulness always protect me.
12For troubles without number surround me;
my sins have overtaken me, and I cannot see.
They are more than the hairs of my head,
and my heart fails within me.
13Be pleased to save me, Lord;
come quickly, Lord, to help me.
14May all who want to take my life
be put to shame and confusion;
may all who desire my ruin
be turned back in disgrace.
15May those who say to me, “Aha! Aha!”
be appalled at their own shame.
16But may all who seek you
rejoice and be glad in you;
may those who long for your saving help always say,
“The Lord is great!”
17But as for me, I am poor and needy;
may the Lord think of me.
You are my help and my deliverer;
you are my God, do not delay.

Faith Persevering in Trial
To the Chief Musician. A Psalm of David.
1I #Ps. 25:5; 27:14; 37:7waited patiently for the Lord;
And He inclined to me,
And heard my cry.
2He also brought me up out of a horrible pit,
Out of #Ps. 69:2, 14; Jer. 38:6the miry clay,
And #Ps. 27:5set my feet upon a rock,
And established my steps.
3#Ps. 32:7; 33:3He has put a new song in my mouth—
Praise to our God;
Many will see it and fear,
And will trust in the Lord.
4#Ps. 34:8; 84:12Blessed is that man who makes the Lord his trust,
And does not respect the proud, nor such as turn aside to lies.
5#Job 9:10Many, O Lord my God, are Your wonderful works
Which You have done;
#Ps. 139:17; (Is. 55:8)And Your thoughts toward us
Cannot be recounted to You in order;
If I would declare and speak of them,
They are more than can be numbered.
6#(1 Sam. 15:22); Ps. 51:16; Is. 1:11; (Jer. 6:20; 7:22, 23); Amos 5:22; (Mic. 6:6–8; Heb. 10:5–9)Sacrifice and offering You did not desire;
My ears You have opened.
Burnt offering and sin offering You did not require.
7Then I said, “Behold, I come;
In the scroll of the book it is written of me.
8#(Matt. 26:39; John 4:34; 6:38); Heb. 10:7I delight to do Your will, O my God,
And Your law is #(Ps. 37:31; Jer. 31:33; 2 Cor. 3:3)within my heart.”
9#Ps. 22:22, 25I have proclaimed the good news of righteousness
In the great assembly;
Indeed, #Ps. 119:13I do not restrain my lips,
O Lord, You Yourself know.
10#Acts 20:20, 27I have not hidden Your righteousness within my heart;
I have declared Your faithfulness and Your salvation;
I have not concealed Your lovingkindness and Your truth
From the great assembly.
11Do not withhold Your tender mercies from me, O Lord;
#Ps. 61:7; Prov. 20:28Let Your lovingkindness and Your truth continually preserve me.
12For innumerable evils have surrounded me;
#Ps. 38:4; 65:3My iniquities have overtaken me, so that I am not able to look up;
They are more than the hairs of my head;
Therefore my heart fails me.
13#Ps. 70:1Be pleased, O Lord, to deliver me;
O Lord, make haste to help me!
14#Ps. 35:4, 26; 70:2; 71:13Let them be ashamed and brought to mutual confusion
Who seek to destroy my life;

Who wish me evil.
15Let them be #Ps. 73:19confounded because of their shame,
Who say to me, “Aha, aha!”
16#Ps. 70:4Let all those who seek You rejoice and be glad in You;
Let such as love Your salvation #Ps. 35:27say continually,
“The Lord be magnified!”
17#Ps. 70:5; 86:1; 109:22But I am poor and needy;
#Ps. 40:5; 1 Pet. 5:7Yet the Lord thinks upon me.
You are my help and my deliverer;
