Psalms 139

Psalm 139
For the director of music. Of David. A psalm.
1You have searched me, Lord,
and you know me.
2You know when I sit and when I rise;
you perceive my thoughts from afar.
3You discern my going out and my lying down;
you are familiar with all my ways.
4Before a word is on my tongue
you, Lord, know it completely.
5You hem me in behind and before,
and you lay your hand upon me.
6Such knowledge is too wonderful for me,
too lofty for me to attain.
7Where can I go from your Spirit?
Where can I flee from your presence?
8If I go up to the heavens, you are there;
if I make my bed in the depths, you are there.
9If I rise on the wings of the dawn,
if I settle on the far side of the sea,
10even there your hand will guide me,
your right hand will hold me fast.
11If I say, “Surely the darkness will hide me
and the light become night around me,”
12even the darkness will not be dark to you;
the night will shine like the day,
for darkness is as light to you.
13For you created my inmost being;
you knit me together in my mother’s womb.
14I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
your works are wonderful,
I know that full well.
15My frame was not hidden from you
when I was made in the secret place,
when I was woven together in the depths of the earth.
16Your eyes saw my unformed body;
all the days ordained for me were written in your book
before one of them came to be.
17How precious to me are your thoughts,#139:17 Or How amazing are your thoughts concerning me God!
How vast is the sum of them!
18Were I to count them,
they would outnumber the grains of sand—
when I awake, I am still with you.
19If only you, God, would slay the wicked!
Away from me, you who are bloodthirsty!
20They speak of you with evil intent;
your adversaries misuse your name.
21Do I not hate those who hate you, Lord,
and abhor those who are in rebellion against you?
22I have nothing but hatred for them;
I count them my enemies.
23Search me, God, and know my heart;
test me and know my anxious thoughts.
24See if there is any offensive way in me,
and lead me in the way everlasting.

Psalms 139

God’s Perfect Knowledge of Man
For the Chief Musician. A Psalm of David.
1O Lord, #Job 10:3, 8You have searched me and known me.
2#Ps. 17:3; Jer. 12:3You know my sitting down and my rising up;
You #2 Kin. 19:27understand my thought afar off.
3#Is. 66:18; Matt. 9:4You comprehend my path and my lying down,
And are acquainted with all my ways.
4For there is not a word on my tongue,
But behold, O Lord, #Job 14:16; 31:4You know it altogether.
5You have hedged me behind and before,
And laid Your hand upon me.
6#(Heb. 4:13)Such knowledge is too wonderful for me;
It is high, I cannot attain it.
7#Job 42:3; Ps. 40:5Where can I go from Your Spirit?
Or where can I flee from Your presence?
8#(Jer. 23:24; Amos 9:2–4)If I ascend into heaven, You are there;
#(Amos 9:2–4)If I make my bed in hell, behold, You are there.
9If I take the wings of the morning,
And dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea,
10Even there Your hand shall lead me,
And Your right hand shall hold me.
11If I say, “Surely the darkness shall fall on me,”
Even the night shall be light about me;
12Indeed, #(Job 26:6; Prov. 15:11)the darkness shall not hide from You,
But the night shines as the day;
The darkness and the light are both alike to You.
13For You formed my inward parts;
You covered me in my mother’s womb.
14I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
Marvelous are Your works,
And that my soul knows very well.
15#Job 26:6; 34:22; (Dan. 2:22; Heb. 4:13)My frame was not hidden from You,
When I was made in secret,
And skillfully wrought in the lowest parts of the earth.
16Your eyes saw my substance, being yet unformed.
And in Your book they all were written,
The days fashioned for me,
When as yet there were none of them.
17#Job 10:8, 9; Eccl. 11:5How precious also are Your thoughts to me, O God!
How great is the sum of them!
18If I should count them, they would be more in number than the sand;
When I awake, I am still with You.
19Oh, that You would #(Ps. 40:5; Rom. 11:33)slay the wicked, O God!
#(Is. 11:4)Depart from me, therefore, you bloodthirsty men.
20For they #Ps. 119:115speak against You wickedly;
Your enemies take Your name in vain.
21#Jude 15Do I not hate them, O Lord, who hate You?
And do I not loathe those who rise up against You?
22I hate them with perfect hatred;
I count them my enemies.
23#2 Chr. 19:2Search me, O God, and know my heart;
Try me, and know my anxieties;
24And see if there is any wicked way in me,
And #Job 31:6; Ps. 26:2lead me in the way everlasting.
