The Destruction of the Temple and Signs of the End Times
1As Jesus was leaving the temple, one of his disciples said to him, “Look, Teacher! What massive stones! What magnificent buildings!”
2 “Do you see all these great buildings?” replied Jesus. “Not one stone here will be left on another; every one will be thrown down.”
3As Jesus was sitting on the Mount of Olives opposite the temple, Peter, James, John and Andrew asked him privately, 4“Tell us, when will these things happen? And what will be the sign that they are all about to be fulfilled?”
5Jesus said to them: “Watch out that no one deceives you. 6Many will come in my name, claiming, ‘I am he,’ and will deceive many. 7When you hear of wars and rumors of wars, do not be alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come. 8Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be earthquakes in various places, and famines. These are the beginning of birth pains.
9 “You must be on your guard. You will be handed over to the local councils and flogged in the synagogues. On account of me you will stand before governors and kings as witnesses to them. 10And the gospel must first be preached to all nations. 11Whenever you are arrested and brought to trial, do not worry beforehand about what to say. Just say whatever is given you at the time, for it is not you speaking, but the Holy Spirit.
12 “Brother will betray brother to death, and a father his child. Children will rebel against their parents and have them put to death. 13Everyone will hate you because of me, but the one who stands firm to the end will be saved.
14 “When you see ‘the abomination that causes desolation’ # 13:14
Daniel 9:27; 11:31; 12:11 standing where it#13:14 Or he does not belong—let the reader understand—then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains. 15Let no one on the housetop go down or enter the house to take anything out. 16Let no one in the field go back to get their cloak. 17How dreadful it will be in those days for pregnant women and nursing mothers! 18Pray that this will not take place in winter, 19because those will be days of distress unequaled from the beginning, when God created the world, until now—and never to be equaled again.
20 “If the Lord had not cut short those days, no one would survive. But for the sake of the elect, whom he has chosen, he has shortened them. 21At that time if anyone says to you, ‘Look, here is the Messiah!’ or, ‘Look, there he is!’ do not believe it. 22For false messiahs and false prophets will appear and perform signs and wonders to deceive, if possible, even the elect. 23So be on your guard; I have told you everything ahead of time.
24 “But in those days, following that distress,
“ ‘the sun will be darkened,
and the moon will not give its light;
25 the stars will fall from the sky,
and the heavenly bodies will be shaken.’ # 13:25
Isaiah 13:10; 34:4
26 “At that time people will see the Son of Man coming in clouds with great power and glory. 27And he will send his angels and gather his elect from the four winds, from the ends of the earth to the ends of the heavens.
28 “Now learn this lesson from the fig tree: As soon as its twigs get tender and its leaves come out, you know that summer is near. 29Even so, when you see these things happening, you know that it#13:29 Or he is near, right at the door. 30Truly I tell you, this generation will certainly not pass away until all these things have happened. 31Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away.
The Day and Hour Unknown
32 “But about that day or hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. 33Be on guard! Be alert#13:33 Some manuscripts alert and pray! You do not know when that time will come. 34It’s like a man going away: He leaves his house and puts his servants in charge, each with their assigned task, and tells the one at the door to keep watch.
35 “Therefore keep watch because you do not know when the owner of the house will come back—whether in the evening, or at midnight, or when the rooster crows, or at dawn. 36If he comes suddenly, do not let him find you sleeping. 37What I say to you, I say to everyone: ‘Watch!’ ”

Mark 13

Mark 13
1¶ And as he went out of the temple, one of his disciples said unto him, Master, see what manner of stones and what buildings are here!
2And Jesus, answering, said unto him, Seest thou these great buildings? There shall not be left one stone upon another that shall not be thrown down.
3And as he sat upon the mount of Olives over against the temple, Peter and James and John and Andrew asked him privately,
4Tell us, when shall these things be? and what shall be the sign when all things are to be finished?
5¶ And Jesus, answering them, began to say, Take heed that no one deceive you,
6for many shall come in my name, saying, I Am Christ, and shall deceive many.
7And when ye shall hear of wars and rumours of wars, be ye not troubled, for such things must needs be; but the end shall not be yet.
8For people shall rise against people and kingdom against kingdom, and there shall be earthquakes in each place, and there shall be famines and troubles: these shall be the beginnings of sorrows.
9But take heed to yourselves, for they shall deliver you up in the councils, and in the synagogues ye shall be beaten; and ye shall be called before rulers and kings for my sake for a testimony unto them.
10And the gospel needs to be preached unto all the Gentiles first.
11But when they shall bring you to deliver you up, do not premeditate beforehand what ye shall speak, neither think ye regarding it, but whatever shall be given you in that hour, that speak ye, for it is not ye that speak, but the Holy Spirit.
12Now the brother shall deliver the brother unto death, and the father the son; and children shall rise up against their parents and shall kill them.
13And ye shall be hated by everyone for my name, but he that shall persevere unto the end, the same shall be saved.
14¶ But when ye shall see the abomination of desolation (spoken of by Daniel the prophet) standing where it ought not, he that reads, let him understand, then let those that are in Judaea flee to the mountains;
15and let him that is on the housetop not go down into the house, neither enter therein to take any thing out of his house;
16and let him that is in the field not turn back again even to take up his garment.
17But woe to those that are with child and to those that give suck in those days!
18Pray, therefore, that your flight not be in winter.
19For those days shall be of affliction such as never was from the beginning of the creation of the things which God created unto this time, neither shall be.
20And except that the Lord had shortened those days, no flesh should be saved, but for the elect’s sake, whom he has chosen, he has shortened those days.
21And then if anyone should say to you, Behold, here is the Christ, or, Behold, he is there, do not believe him;
22for false Christs and false prophets shall rise and shall show signs and wonders to seduce, if possible, even the elect.
23But take ye heed; behold, I have told you everything beforehand.
24¶ But in those days after that affliction, the sun shall darken, and the moon shall not give her light,
25and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers that are in the heavens shall be shaken.
26And then shall they see the Son of man coming in the clouds with great power and glory.
27And then shall he send his angels and shall gather together his elect from the four winds, from the uttermost part of the earth unto the uttermost part of the heaven.
28¶ Learn the similitude from the fig tree: When her branch is yet tender and puts forth leaves, ye know that summer is near;
29so ye in like manner, when ye shall see these things come to pass, know that it is near, even at the doors.
30Verily I say unto you that this generation shall not pass until all these things are done.
31Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away.
32But of that day and that hour no one knows, no, not even the angels who are in the heaven, neither the Son, but only the Father.
33Take ye heed, watch and pray; for ye know not when the time shall be.
34As the man who, taking a far journey, left his house and gave his estate to his slaves and to each one his responsibility and commanded the porter to watch.
35Watch ye therefore, for ye know not when the Lord of the house comes: at evening or at midnight or at the cockcrowing or in the morning,
36lest coming suddenly he find you sleeping.
37And what I say unto you, I say unto all: Watch.
