17
1Ahithophel said to Absalom, “I would#17:1 Or Let me choose twelve thousand men and set out tonight in pursuit of David. 2I would attack him while he is weary and weak. I would strike him with terror, and then all the people with him will flee. I would strike down only the king 3and bring all the people back to you. The death of the man you seek will mean the return of all; all the people will be unharmed.” 4This plan seemed good to Absalom and to all the elders of Israel.
5But Absalom said, “Summon also Hushai the Arkite, so we can hear what he has to say as well.” 6When Hushai came to him, Absalom said, “Ahithophel has given this advice. Should we do what he says? If not, give us your opinion.”
7Hushai replied to Absalom, “The advice Ahithophel has given is not good this time. 8You know your father and his men; they are fighters, and as fierce as a wild bear robbed of her cubs. Besides, your father is an experienced fighter; he will not spend the night with the troops. 9Even now, he is hidden in a cave or some other place. If he should attack your troops first,#17:9 Or When some of the men fall at the first attack whoever hears about it will say, ‘There has been a slaughter among the troops who follow Absalom.’ 10Then even the bravest soldier, whose heart is like the heart of a lion, will melt with fear, for all Israel knows that your father is a fighter and that those with him are brave.
11“So I advise you: Let all Israel, from Dan to Beersheba—as numerous as the sand on the seashore—be gathered to you, with you yourself leading them into battle. 12Then we will attack him wherever he may be found, and we will fall on him as dew settles on the ground. Neither he nor any of his men will be left alive. 13If he withdraws into a city, then all Israel will bring ropes to that city, and we will drag it down to the valley until not so much as a pebble is left.”
14Absalom and all the men of Israel said, “The advice of Hushai the Arkite is better than that of Ahithophel.” For the Lord had determined to frustrate the good advice of Ahithophel in order to bring disaster on Absalom.
15Hushai told Zadok and Abiathar, the priests, “Ahithophel has advised Absalom and the elders of Israel to do such and such, but I have advised them to do so and so. 16Now send a message at once and tell David, ‘Do not spend the night at the fords in the wilderness; cross over without fail, or the king and all the people with him will be swallowed up.’ ”
17Jonathan and Ahimaaz were staying at En Rogel. A female servant was to go and inform them, and they were to go and tell King David, for they could not risk being seen entering the city. 18But a young man saw them and told Absalom. So the two of them left at once and went to the house of a man in Bahurim. He had a well in his courtyard, and they climbed down into it. 19His wife took a covering and spread it out over the opening of the well and scattered grain over it. No one knew anything about it.
20When Absalom’s men came to the woman at the house, they asked, “Where are Ahimaaz and Jonathan?”
The woman answered them, “They crossed over the brook.”#17:20 Or “They passed by the sheep pen toward the water.” The men searched but found no one, so they returned to Jerusalem.
21After they had gone, the two climbed out of the well and went to inform King David. They said to him, “Set out and cross the river at once; Ahithophel has advised such and such against you.” 22So David and all the people with him set out and crossed the Jordan. By daybreak, no one was left who had not crossed the Jordan.
23When Ahithophel saw that his advice had not been followed, he saddled his donkey and set out for his house in his hometown. He put his house in order and then hanged himself. So he died and was buried in his father’s tomb.
Absalom’s Death
24David went to Mahanaim, and Absalom crossed the Jordan with all the men of Israel. 25Absalom had appointed Amasa over the army in place of Joab. Amasa was the son of Jether,#17:25 Hebrew Ithra, a variant of Jether an Ishmaelite#17:25 Some Septuagint manuscripts (see also 1 Chron. 2:17); Hebrew and other Septuagint manuscripts Israelite who had married Abigail,#17:25 Hebrew Abigal, a variant of Abigail the daughter of Nahash and sister of Zeruiah the mother of Joab. 26The Israelites and Absalom camped in the land of Gilead.
27When David came to Mahanaim, Shobi son of Nahash from Rabbah of the Ammonites, and Makir son of Ammiel from Lo Debar, and Barzillai the Gileadite from Rogelim 28brought bedding and bowls and articles of pottery. They also brought wheat and barley, flour and roasted grain, beans and lentils,#17:28 Most Septuagint manuscripts and Syriac; Hebrew lentils, and roasted grain 29honey and curds, sheep, and cheese from cows’ milk for David and his people to eat. For they said, “The people have become exhausted and hungry and thirsty in the wilderness.”

Hushai o lahla Abosalome
1Ahitofele a re ho Abosalome: “Ere jwale ke kgethe banna ba dikete tse leshome le metso e mmedi. Bosiung bona bona ke tla tsoha, ke yo phaladisa Davida. 2Ke tla mo kgaoletsa a sa kgathetse, a nyahame pelo. Ke tla mo tshosa, mme ere ha bohle ba nang le yena ba phasaphasa, ke mmolaye. 3Ke tla o tlisetsa batho bohle. Ha bohle ba se ba kgutlile, haese feela motho eo o mmatlang, setjhaba sohle se tla ba kgotso.”
4Taba ena ya kgahla Abosalome le baholo ba setjhaba sa Iseraele. 5Yaba Abosalome o re: “Mpitsetseng le Hushai wa Moareke, re tlo utlwa hore na yena o tla reng.”
6Ha Hushai a fihla ho Abosalome, Abosalome a bua le yena, a re: “Ahitofele o buile tjena le tjena; na re tla ya ka dipolelo tsa hae? Haeba ho se jwalo, wena o reng?”
7Hushai a re ho Abosalome: “Ha e le kajeno, keletso ena ya Ahitofele ha e ntle.” 8Hushai a tswela pele, a re: “Wena o tseba ntatao le banna ba hae; ke bahale ba pelo di mpe, ba jwaloka bere e amohilweng madinyane a yona naheng. Ntatao ke monna ya tsebang ntwa; ha a na ho robala le bahlabani ba hae. 9Le hona jwale o ipatile mahaheng, kapa sebakeng se seng. Haeba ba bang ba bahlabani ba rona ba ka bolawa sethathong, ya utlwang o tla re: ‘Balatedi ba Abosalome ba entswe mofela.’ 10Esitana le mohale eo bohale ba hae ekang ba tau, o tla nyahama pelo. Baiseraele bohle ba a tseba hore ntatao ke mohlabani, le hore banna bao a nang le bona ke bahale.
11“Nna ke o eletsa hore o kgobokanye Baiseraele bohle, ho tloha Dane ho ya fihla Beeresheba, e be letshwele le lengata jwaloka lehlabathe lebopong la lewatle; ebe wena ka sebele sa hao o a futuha. 12Jwale re tla mo futuhela hohle moo re tla mo fumana teng, re mo wele hodimo jwaloka phoka ha e lala hodima lefatshe. Yena le banna bohle bao a nang le bona ha ho ya tla phonyoha. 13Haeba a ka etsa sealo ho ya kena motseng, Baiseraele bohle ba tla tlisa mehala, mme ka yona re hulele motse oo ka nokeng, ho fihlela ho se lejwe le le leng la motse oo le setseng.”
14Yaba Abosalome le banna bohle ba Iseraele, ba re: “Keletso ena ya Hushai wa Moareke e ntle ho feta keletso ya Ahitofele.” Morena o ne a rerile hore keletso e ntle ya Ahitofele e nyope, e le hore Morena a tle a dihele koduwa hodima Abosalome.
Davida o a eletswa, mme o a phonyoha
15Jwale Hushai a re ho bo-Sadoke le Abiatare, e leng baprista: “Ahitofele o ile a eletsa Abosalome le baholo ba Iseraele tjena le tjena, empa nna ke ile ka mo eletsa tjena le tjena. 16Ka baka lena he, romelang molaetsa ho Davida ka potlako, le mmolelle, le re: ‘Bosiung bona bona o se ke wa ba wa robaletsa diphuleng tsa lehwatata, o mpe o tshelele kamose ho noka ya Jorodane, esere kgosi le batho bohle bao e nang le bona ba timetswa.’ ”
17Bo-Jonathane le Ahimase ba ne ba ye ba ipate pela Sediba sa Rogele. 20Jwale bahlanka ba Abosalome ba kena ka tlung ya mosadi eo, ba re: “Bo-Ahimase le Jonathane ba kae?”
Mosadi a re ho bona: “Ba se ba tshetse noka ya Jorodane.” Ha ba se ba batlile, mme ba sa ba fumana, ba kgutlela Jerusalema.
21Yare ha bao ba se ba tsamaile, bo-Ahimase le Jonathane ba tswa ka sekoting, ba tsamaya, ba ya bolella kgosi Davida, ba re ho yena: “Ema, o tshele noka ka potlako, hobane Ahitofele o le lohetse mano tjena le tjena.” 22Davida le batho bohle ba neng ba ena le yena ba tsamaya, ba tshela Jorodane. Ha mafube a hlaha, ho ne ho se le ya mong ya esong ho ka a tshela Jorodane.
23Ha Ahitofele a bona hore ha ho uwe ka keletso ya hae, a qhaneha tonki ya hae, a tsamaya, a ipoella tlung ya hae, motseng wa habo. Ha a se a laile ba lelapa la hae, a ikgama, a shwa, mme a epelwa lebitleng la ntatae.
24Ha Abosalome le banna bohle ba Baiseraele, ba neng ba ena le yena, ba tshela Jorodane, Davida o ne a se a fihlile Mahanaime. 25Abosalome a bea Amasa ditulong tsa Joabe, hore e be molaodi wa mabotho. Amasa e ne e le mora wa monna wa Moishemaele, ya neng a bitswa Jitera. Mmae e ne e le Abikale, moradi wa Nahashe, e leng moena wa Seruya, mma Joabe. 26Bo-Abosalome le Baiseraele ba hloma naheng ya Gileade.
27Ha Davida a fihla Mahanaime, a kgahlanyetswa ke Shobi, mora wa Nahashe, ya tswang motseng wa Baamone wa Raba, le Makiri, mora wa Amiele wa Lo-Dabare, le Barasilai wa Mogileade ya tswang Rogeleme. 28Ba tlisa mealo, le dikotlolo, le dipitsana tsa letsopa, le koro, le harese, le phofo, le sebera, le dinawa, le dierekisi, le dipabi, 29le mahe a dinotshi, le mafi, le sereledi, le dikgutshwane, le dipholo; tsena ba di nea Davida, le batho bao a neng a ena le bona, hore ba je, hobane ba ne ba re: “Batho bana ba lapile, ba kgathetse, mme ba nyorilwe mona lehwatateng.”
