Ezekiel Introduction

Introduction
Ezekiel was a priest in Judah. He was taken as a prisoner by King Nebuchadnezzar. Ezekiel along with many other Israelites was taken to Babylon. That happened 597 years before Jesus the Messiah was born. After living five years in Babylon, God called Ezekiel to speak the word of the Lord to his people.
Ezekiel brought these words as speeches in the form of poems. He presented these words to the people in public places. Ezekiel brought some of the Lord’s word in stories. He also described the dreams God sent to him.
The book of Ezekiel has three main parts. The first part is about Israel’s disobedience and their punishment. The second part tells of God’s judgment against other nations. The third part describes how God will restore Israel.
In the first part, Ezekiel tells of a vision he had. It tells that God has removed his presence from the temple in Jerusalem. And God did that because the people of Israel no longer obeyed his laws and commands. The second part has speeches against the nations. Their message is clear. Even though God’s temple is destroyed, he is still in control of the world.
The book closes with promises. Ezekiel’s visions show the unfolding of God’s saving purposes in the world. God will renew the hearts of his people. And God will finally renew all life on earth. A sinful, broken world will be healed. That will happen when the Lord returns to live with his people. And it will be in a land that has become like the garden of Eden.
