Deuteronomy Introduction
Introduction
The book of Deuteronomy records the great speeches Moses gives just before he died. Moses talks to the Israelites who had grown up while wandering in the desert. He speaks to them as they prepare to enter the land of Canaan. God wants them to know what renewed life with his blessings will be like.
Deuteronomy tells about God’s special promise to the Israelites. That promise is presented in the form of an agreement. This type of agreement was used by rulers of those times. These rulers made agreements with the people they ruled. The usual form of the agreement had these five parts. The book of Deuteronomy follows the pattern of these five parts very closely.
1. The God of Israel is the great king. Moses speaks God’s words to the people.
2. The mighty acts that God did for the Israelites are stated. This will help the people remember.
3. The rules, laws and commands that God gave are listed. Moses asks the people to promise that they will obey these rules, laws and commands.
4. The blessings for keeping God’s laws and commands are stated. And the bad things that will happen for not keeping them are also stated.
5. Moses chooses Joshua to be the next leader of the Israelites.
Deuteronomy ends with Moses and the Israelites. Moses climbs the mountain and sees the land promised to Israelites. There Moses dies. The Israelites stand ready to take the land God promised to them. And in that promise they see a new life before them.
