Mark 1

Mark 1
1¶ The beginning of the gospel of Jesus, the Christ, Son of God,
2as it is written in the prophets, Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, who shall prepare thy way before thee.
3The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord; make his paths straight.
4John baptized in the wilderness and preached the baptism of repentance for remission of sins.
5And there went out unto him all the land of Judaea and those of Jerusalem and were all baptized of him in the river of Jordan, confessing their sins.
6John was clothed with camel’s hair and with a girdle of a skin about his loins; and he ate locusts and wild honey
7and preached, saying, There comes one mightier than I after me, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to stoop down and unloose.
8I indeed have baptized you with water, but he shall baptize you with the Holy Spirit.
9¶ And it came to pass in those days that Jesus came from Nazareth a city of Galilee and was baptized of John in the Jordan.
10And as soon as he was come out of the water, John saw the heavens opened and the Spirit like a dove descending and resting upon him;
11and there came a voice from heaven, saying, Thou art my dear Son, in whom I delight.
12And immediately the Spirit drove him into the wilderness.
13And he was there in the wilderness forty days and forty nights and was tempted of Satan and was with the wild beasts, and the angels ministered unto him.
14¶ Now after John was put in prison, Jesus came into Galilee, preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God
15and saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent ye and believe the gospel.
16Now as he walked by the sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and Andrew his brother casting a net into the sea, for they were fishers.
17And Jesus said unto them, Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.
18And straightway they forsook their nets and followed him.
19And when he had gone a little further from there, he saw James the son of Zebedee and John his brother, who also were in the ship mending their nets.
20And straightway he called them; and leaving their father Zebedee in the ship with the hired servants, they went after him.
21And they entered into Capernaum, and straightway on the sabbath days he entered into the synagogue and taught.
22And they marvelled at his learning, for he taught them as one that had power with him, and not as the scribes.
23¶ And there was in their synagogue a man with an unclean spirit, and he cried out,
24saying, Let us alone; what have we to do with thee, thou Jesus of Nazareth? Art thou come to destroy us? I know thee who thou art, the Holy One of God.
25And Jesus rebuked him, saying, Be silent, and come out of him.
26And the unclean spirit tore him and cried with a loud voice and came out of him.
27And they were all amazed, insomuch that they questioned among themselves, saying, What thing is this? What new doctrine is this? for he commands the unclean spirits with power, and they obey him.
28And immediately his fame spread abroad throughout all the region round about Galilee.
29¶ And forthwith, when they were come out of the synagogue, they entered into the house of Simon and Andrew, with James and John.
30But Simon’s mother-in-law lay sick of a fever, and soon they told him of her.
31And he came and took her by the hand and lifted her up; and the fever left her by and by, and she ministered unto them.
32In the evening, when the sun was down, they brought unto him all that were diseased and those that were possessed with devils.
33And all the city was gathered together at the door.
34And he healed many that were sick of diverse diseases and cast out many devils and suffered not the devils to speak because they knew him.
35And in the morning, rising up a great while before day, he went out and departed into a solitary place and prayed there.
36And Simon and those that were with him followed after him.
37And when they had found him, they said unto him, All men seek for thee.
38And he said unto them, Let us go into the next towns that I may preach there also, for truly I came forth for that purpose.
39And he preached in their synagogues throughout all Galilee and cast out devils.
40¶ And a leper came to him, beseeching him and kneeling down to him and saying unto him, If thou wilt, thou canst make me clean.
41And Jesus, having mercy on him, put forth his hand and touched him and said unto him, I will; be thou clean.
42And as soon as he had spoken, immediately the leprosy departed from him, and he was clean.
43And he straitly charged him and forthwith sent him away
44and said unto him, See thou say nothing to any man, but go, show thyself to the priest, and offer for thy cleansing those things which Moses commanded, for a testimony unto them.
45But he went out and began to publish it much and to blaze abroad the matter, insomuch that Jesus could no more openly enter into the city, but was without in desert places; and they came to him from every quarter.

The message of John the Baptist
The preaching of John the Baptist
(Matthew 3.1-12; Luke 3.1-18; John 1.19-28)
1This is the good news about Jesus Christ, the Son of God.#1.1 the Son of God: These words are not in some manuscripts. 2It began just as God had said in the book written by Isaiah the prophet,#Ml 3.1.
“I am sending my messenger
to get the way ready
for you.
3In the desert#Is 40.3 (LXX).
someone is shouting,
‘Get the road ready
for the Lord!
Make a straight path
for him.’ ”
4So John the Baptist appeared in the desert and told everyone, “Turn back to God and be baptized! Then your sins will be forgiven.”
5From all Judea and Jerusalem crowds of people went to John. They told how sorry they were for their sins, and he baptized them in the River Jordan.
6John wore clothes made of camel's hair. He had a leather strap around his waist and ate grasshoppers and wild honey.#2 K 1.8.
7John also told the people, “Someone more powerful is going to come. And I am not good enough even to stoop down and untie his sandals.#1.7 untie his sandals: This was the duty of a slave. 8I baptize you with water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit!”
The baptism and temptation of Jesus
The baptism of Jesus
(Matthew 3.13-17; Luke 3.21,22)
9About that time Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee, and John baptized him in the River Jordan. 10As soon as Jesus came out of the water, he saw the sky open and the Holy Spirit coming down to him like a dove. 11A voice from heaven said, “You are my own dear Son, and I am pleased with you.”#Gn 22.2; Ps 2.7; Is 42.1; Mt 3.17; 12.18; Mk 9.7; Lk 3.22.
Jesus and Satan
(Matthew 4.1-11; Luke 4.1-13)
12Straight away God's Spirit made Jesus go into the desert. 13He stayed there for forty days while Satan tested him. Jesus was with the wild animals, but angels took care of him.
Jesus in Galilee
Jesus begins his work
(Matthew 4.12-17; Luke 4.14,15)
14After John was arrested, Jesus went to Galilee and told the good news that comes from God.#1.14 that comes from God: Or “that is about God”. 15He said, “The time has come! God's kingdom will soon be here.#1.15 will soon be here: Or “is already here”. Turn back to God and believe the good news!”#Mt 3.2.
Jesus chooses four fishermen
(Matthew 4.18-22; Luke 5.1-11)
16As Jesus was walking along the shore of Lake Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew. They were fishermen and were casting their nets into the lake. 17Jesus said to them, “Come with me! I will teach you how to bring in people instead of fish.” 18At once the two brothers dropped their nets and went with him.
19Jesus walked on and soon saw James and John, the sons of Zebedee. They were in a boat, mending their nets. 20At once Jesus asked them to come with him. They left their father in the boat with the hired workers and went with him.
A man with an evil spirit
(Luke 4.31-37)
21Jesus and his disciples went to the town of Capernaum. Then on the next Sabbath he went into the Jewish meeting place and started teaching. 22Everyone was amazed at his teaching. He taught with authority, and not like the teachers of the Law of Moses.#Mt 7.28,29. 23Suddenly a man with an evil spirit#1.23 evil spirit: A Jewish person who had an evil spirit was considered “unclean” and was not allowed to eat or worship with other Jewish people. in him entered the meeting place and yelled, 24“Jesus from Nazareth, what do you want with us? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are! You are God's Holy One.”
25Jesus told the evil spirit, “Be quiet and come out of the man!” 26The spirit shook him. Then it gave a loud shout and left.
27Everyone was completely surprised and kept saying to each other, “What is this? It must be some new kind of powerful teaching! Even the evil spirits obey him.” 28News about Jesus quickly spread all over Galilee.
Jesus heals many people
(Matthew 8.14-17; Luke 4.38-41)
29As soon as Jesus left the meeting place with James and John, they went home with Simon and Andrew. 30When they got there, Jesus was told that Simon's mother-in-law was sick in bed with fever. 31Jesus went to her. He took hold of her hand and helped her up. The fever left her, and she served them a meal.
32That evening after sunset,#1.32 after sunset: The Sabbath was over, and a new day began at sunset. all who were sick or had demons in them were brought to Jesus. 33In fact, the whole town gathered around the door of the house. 34Jesus healed all kinds of terrible diseases and forced out a lot of demons. But the demons knew who he was, and he did not let them speak.
35Very early the next morning, Jesus got up and went to a place where he could be alone and pray. 36Simon and the others started looking for him. 37And when they found him, they said, “Everyone is looking for you!”
38Jesus replied, “We must go to the nearby towns, so that I can tell the good news to those people. This is why I have come.” 39Then Jesus went to Jewish meeting places everywhere in Galilee, where he preached and forced out demons.#Mt 4.23; 9.35.
Jesus heals a man
(Matthew 8.1-4; Luke 5.12-16)
40A man with leprosy#1.40 leprosy: In biblical times the word “leprosy” was used for many different kinds of skin diseases. came to Jesus and knelt down.#1.40 and knelt down: These words are not in some manuscripts. He begged, “You have the power to make me well, if only you wanted to.”
41Jesus felt sorry for#1.41 felt sorry for: Some manuscripts have “was angry with”. the man. So he put his hand on him and said, “I want to! Now you are well.” 42At once the man's leprosy disappeared, and he was well.
43After Jesus strictly warned the man, he sent him on his way. 44He said, “Don't tell anyone about this. Just go and show the priest that you are well. Then take a gift to the temple as Moses commanded, and everyone will know that you have been healed.”#1.44 everyone will know that you have been healed: People with leprosy had to be examined by a priest and told that they were well (that is, “clean”) before they could once again live a normal life in the Jewish community. The gift that Moses commanded was the sacrifice of some lambs together with flour mixed with olive oil.#Lv 14.1-32.
45The man talked about it so much and told so many people, that Jesus could no longer go openly into a town. He had to stay away from the towns, but people still came to him from everywhere.
