Matthew 9:1-17

¶ And he entered into a ship and passed over and came into his own city. And, behold, they brought him a paralyzed man, lying on a bed; and Jesus, seeing their faith, said unto the paralyzed man, Trust, son; thy sins are forgiven thee. And, behold, certain of the scribes said within themselves, This man blasphemes. And Jesus knowing their thoughts said, Why think ye evil in your hearts? For what is easier, to say, Thy sins are forgiven thee, or to say, Arise, and walk? But that ye may know that the Son of man has power on earth to forgive sins (then said he to the paralyzed man), Arise, take up thy bed, and go unto thine house. Then he arose and departed to his house. And the multitude, seeing it, marvelled and glorified God, who had given such power unto men. ¶ And as Jesus passed forth from there, he saw a man, named Matthew, sitting at the receipt of custom; and he said unto him, Follow me. And he arose and followed him. And it came to pass, as he sat at food in his house, behold, many publicans and sinners that had come sat down at the table with Jesus and his disciples. And when the Pharisees saw it, they said unto his disciples, Why does your Master eat with publicans and sinners? But when Jesus heard that, he said unto them, Those that are whole need not a physician, but those that are sick. Therefore go ye and learn what this is, I will have mercy and not sacrifice, for I am not come to call the righteous but sinners to repentance. ¶ Then the disciples of John came to him, saying, Why do we and the Pharisees fast often, but thy disciples do not fast? And Jesus said unto them, Can the sons of the bridechamber mourn, as long as the bridegroom is with them? But the days will come when the bridegroom shall be taken from them, and then they shall fast. No one mends an old garment with a piece of new cloth, for that patch takes from the garment, and the rent is made worse. Neither do they put new wine into old wineskins, otherwise the wineskins break, and the wine runs out, and the wineskins perish; but they put new wine into new wineskins, and both are preserved together.
