Jeremiah 46
1¶ The word of the Lord which came to Jeremiah the prophet against the Gentiles.
2To Egypt: against the army of Pharaohnecho king of Egypt, which was by the river Euphrates in Carchemish, which Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon smote in the fourth year of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah king of Judah.
3Order ye the buckler and shield, and draw near to battle.
4Harness the horses; and get up, ye horsemen, and stand forth with your helmets; furbish the spears, and put on the brigandines.
5Why have I seen them dismayed and turned away back? and their mighty ones are beaten down and are fled in haste, and do not look back: for fear was round about, said the Lord.
6Do not let the swift flee away, nor the mighty man escape; they stumbled and fell toward the north by the river Euphrates.
7Who is this that comes up as a flood, whose waters move as rivers?
8Egypt rises up like a flood, and his waters move like rivers; and he said, I will go up and will cover the earth; I will destroy the city and its inhabitants.
9Come up, ye horses; and rage, ye chariots; and let the mighty men come forth; the Ethiopians and the Libyans, that handle the shield; and the Lydians, that handle and bend the bow.
10But this day shall be unto the Lord GOD of the hosts, a day of vengeance, that he may avenge him of his adversaries; and the sword shall devour, and it shall be satiated and made drunk with their blood; for it shall be a slaughter unto the Lord GOD of the hosts in the north country by the river Euphrates.
11Go up into Gilead, and take balm, O virgin, the daughter of Egypt: in vain shalt thou use many medicines; for there is no cure for thee.
12¶ The nations have heard of thy shame, and thy cry has filled the land; for the mighty man has stumbled against the mighty, and they are both fallen together.
13The word that the Lord spoke to Jeremiah the prophet, how Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon should come and smite the land of Egypt.
14Declare ye in Egypt, and publish in Migdol, and publish in Memphis and in Tahpanhes: say ye, Stand fast, and prepare thee; for the sword shall devour round about thee.
15Why is thy fortress swept away? It could not stand because the Lord pushed it over.
16He multiplied the fallen; yea, one fell upon another; and they said, Arise, and let us go again to our own people and to the land of our nativity, away from the overcoming sword.
17They cried there: Pharaoh king of Egypt is but a noise; he allowed the appointed time to pass by.
18 As I live, saith the King, whose name is the Lord of the hosts, Surely as Tabor is among the mountains, and as Carmel by the sea, so shall he come.
19O thou daughter dwelling in Egypt, furnish thyself to go into captivity; for Memphis shall be a pasture and shall be made desolate without an inhabitant.
20Egypt is like a very fair heifer, but destruction comes; it comes out of the north.
21Also her soldiers are in the midst of her like fatted bullocks; for they also turned back, and all fled away without stopping: because the day of their calamity was come upon them and the time of their visitation.
22Her voice shall go forth like a serpent; for they shall march with an army and come against her with axes as hewers of wood.
23They shall cut down her forest, saith the Lord, for they cannot be counted because they are more than the locusts; they are innumerable.
24The daughter of Egypt shall be confounded; she shall be delivered into the hand of the people of the north.
25The Lord of the hosts, the God of Israel, said: Behold, I will visit the multitude of Alexandria, and Pharaoh, and Egypt, with their gods, and their kings; even Pharaoh, and all those that trust in him.
26And I will deliver them into the hand of those that seek their soul and into the hand of Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon, and into the hand of his slaves; and afterward it shall be inhabited, as in the days of old, saith the Lord.
27But fear not thou, O my slave Jacob, and be not dismayed, O Israel: for, behold, I will save thee from afar off, and thy seed from the land of their captivity; and Jacob shall return and be in rest and be prospered, and no one shall make him afraid.
28Fear thou not, O Jacob my slave, saith the Lord: for I am with thee; for I will make a full end of all the Gentiles where I have driven thee: but I will not make a full end of thee, but I will chastise thee with judgment; and I will not completely cut thee off.

Egypt's Defeat at Carchemish
1The LORD spoke to me about the nations, 2#Is 19.1–25; Ezek 29.1—32.32beginning with Egypt. This is what he said about the army of King Neco of Egypt, which King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylonia defeated at Carchemish near the River Euphrates in the fourth year that Jehoiakim was king of Judah:
3“The Egyptian officers shout,
‘Get your shields ready
and march into battle!
4Harness your horses and mount them!
Fall in line and put on your helmets!
Sharpen your spears!
Put on your armour!’
5“But what do I see?” asks the LORD.
“They are turning back in terror.
Their soldiers are beaten back;
overcome with fear, they run as fast as they can
and do not look back.
6Those who run fast cannot get away;
the soldiers cannot escape.
In the north, by the Euphrates,
they stumble and fall.
7Who is this that rises like the Nile,
like a river flooding its banks?
8It is Egypt, rising like the Nile,
like a river flooding its banks.
Egypt said, ‘I will rise and cover the world;
I will destroy cities and the people who live there.
9Command the horses to go
and the chariots to roll!
Send out the soldiers:
men from Ethiopia#46.9 Ethiopia: See Word List. and Libya, carrying shields,
and skilled archers from Lydia.’ ”
10This is the day of the Sovereign LORD Almighty:
today he will take revenge;
today he will punish his enemies.
His sword will eat them until it is full,
and drink their blood until it is satisfied.
Today the Almighty sacrifices his victims
in the north, by the Euphrates.
11People of Egypt, go to Gilead#46.11 Gilead: See 8.22.
and look for medicine!
All your medicine has proved useless;
nothing can heal you.
12Nations have heard of your shame;
everyone has heard you cry.
One soldier trips over another,
and both of them fall to the ground.
The Coming of Nebuchadnezzar
13 #
Jer 43.10–13
When King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylonia came to attack Egypt, the LORD spoke to me. He said,
14“Proclaim it in the towns of Egypt,
in Migdol, Memphis, and Tahpanhes:
‘Get ready to defend yourselves;
all you have will be destroyed in war!
15Why has your mighty god Apis fallen?
The LORD has struck him down!’
16Your soldiers have stumbled and fallen;#46.16 Probable text Your soldiers… fallen; Hebrew unclear.
each one says to the other,
‘Hurry! Let's go home to our people
and escape the enemy's sword!’
17“Give the king of Egypt a new name —
‘Noisy Braggart who Missed his Chance’.
18I, the LORD Almighty, am king.
I am the living God.
As Mount Tabor towers above the mountains
and Mount Carmel stands high above the sea,
so will be the strength of the one who attacks you.
19Get ready to be taken prisoner,
you people of Egypt!
Memphis will be made a desert,
a ruin where no one lives.
20Egypt is like a splendid cow,
attacked by a stinging fly from the north.
21Even her hired soldiers
are helpless as calves.
They did not stand and fight;
all of them turned and ran.
The day of their doom had arrived,
the time of their destruction.
22Egypt runs away, hissing like a snake,
as the enemy's army approaches.
They attack her with axes,
like men cutting down trees
23and destroying a thick forest.
Their men are too many to count;
their soldiers outnumber the locusts.
24The people of Egypt are put to shame;
they are conquered by the people of the north.
I, the LORD, have spoken.”
25The LORD Almighty, the God of Israel, says, “I am going to punish Amon, the god of Thebes, together with Egypt and its gods and kings. I am going to take the king of Egypt and all who put their trust in him, 26and hand them over to those who want to kill them, to King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylonia and his army. But later on, people will live in Egypt again, as they did in times past. I, the LORD, have spoken.”
The LORD will Save his People
27 #
Jer 30.10–11
“My people, do not be afraid,
people of Israel, do not be terrified.
I will rescue you from that distant land,
from the land where you are prisoners.
You will come back home and live in peace;
you will be secure, and no one will make you afraid.
28I will come to you and save you.
I will destroy all the nations
where I have scattered you,
but I will not destroy you.
I will not let you go unpunished;
but when I punish you, I will be fair.
I, the LORD, have spoken.”
