The Angel with the Little Scroll
1 Then#tn Here καί (kai) has been translated as “then” to indicate the implied sequence of events within the vision. I saw another powerful angel descending from heaven, wrapped#tn Or “clothed.” in a cloud, with a rainbow above his head; his face was like the sun and his legs were like pillars of fire.#tn Or “like fiery pillars,” translating πυρός (puros) as an attributive genitive. 2 He held#tn Grk “and having.” Because of the length and complexity of the Greek sentence, a new sentence was started here in the translation by supplying the pronoun “he.” in his hand a little scroll that was open, and he put his right foot on the sea and his left on the land. 3 Then#tn Here καί (kai) has been translated as “then” to indicate the implied sequence of events within the vision. he shouted in a loud voice like a lion roaring, and when he shouted, the seven thunders sounded their voices. 4 When the seven thunders spoke, I was preparing to write, but#tn Here καί (kai) has been translated as “but” to indicate the contrast present in this context. just then#tn The words “just then” are not in the Greek text, but are implied. I heard a voice from heaven say, “Seal up what the seven thunders spoke and do not write it down.” 5 Then#tn Here καί (kai) has been translated as “then” to indicate the implied sequence of events within the vision. the angel I saw standing on the sea and on the land raised his right hand to heaven 6 and swore by the one who lives forever and ever, who created heaven and what is in it, and the earth and what is in it, and the sea and what is in it, “There will be no more delay!#tn On this phrase see BDAG 1092 s.v. χρόνος. 7 But in the days#tn Grk “But in the days of the voice of the seventh angel.” when the seventh angel is about to blow his trumpet, the mystery of God is completed,#tn The aorist ἐτελέσθη (etelesqh) has been translated as a proleptic (futuristic) aorist (ExSyn 564 cites this verse as an example). just as he has#tn The time of the action described by the aorist εὐηγγέλισεν (euhngelisen) seems to be past with respect to the aorist passive ἐτελέσθη (etelesqh). For this reason, μετ᾿ ἐμοῦ (met’ emou, “with me”) was translated as “to me.” again,#tn Grk “again, saying.” The participle λέγουσαν (legousan) is redundant in contemporary English and has not been translated. “Go and take the open#tn The perfect passive participle ἠνεῳγμένον (hnewgmenon) is in second attributive position and has been translated as an attributive adjective. scroll in the hand of the angel who is standing on the sea and on the land.” 9 So#tn Here καί (kai) has been translated as “so” to indicate the implied result of the instructions given by the voice. The Angel and the Little Scroll
1#Mt 17:2; Rev 1:15–16Then I saw another mighty angel coming down from heaven, clothed with a cloud and a rainbow on his head. His face was like the sun, and his feet like pillars of fire. 2#Rev 10:5He had a little scroll open in his hand. He set his right foot on the sea and his left foot on the land, 3#Isa 31:4; Joel 3:16and cried out with a loud voice, like a lion roaring. When he cried out, seven thunders sounded their voices. 4#Da 8:26; 12:4And when the seven thunders sounded their voices, I was about to write, but I heard a voice from heaven saying to me, “Seal up those things which the seven thunders said, and do not write them.”
5#Da 12:7; Ge 14:22; Dt 32:40The angel whom I saw standing on the sea and on the earth lifted up his hand to heaven 6#Rev 4:11and swore by Him who lives forever and ever, who created heaven and the things that are in them, and the earth and the things that are in it, and the sea and the things that are in it, that there should be no more delay. 7#Ro 16:25But in the days when the seventh angel is about to sound, the mystery of God will be fulfilled, as He has declared to His servants the prophets.
8Then the voice which I heard from heaven spoke to me again and said, “Go, take the little scroll which is open in the hand of the angel who is standing on the sea and on the earth.”
9#Jer 15:16; Eze 2:8So I went to the angel and said to him, “Give me the little scroll.” He said to me, “Take it and eat it. ‘It will turn your stomach sour, but in your mouth it will be as sweet as honey.’#Eze 3:3.” 10I took the little scroll from the angel’s hand and ate it. It was as sweet as honey in my mouth, but when I had eaten it, my stomach turned sour. 11#Eze 37:4Then he said to me, “You must prophesy again about many peoples and nations and tongues and kings.”
