Joshua Challenges Israel to be Faithful
1 A long time#tn Heb “many days.” passed after the Lord made Israel secure from all their enemies,#tn Heb “the Lord had given rest to Israel from their enemies all around.” and Joshua was very old.#tn Heb “was old, coming into the days.” This expression, referring to advancing in years, also occurs in the following verse. 2 So Joshua summoned all Israel, including the elders, rulers, judges, and leaders, and told them: “I am very old. 3 You saw everything the Lord your God did to all these nations on your behalf, for the Lord your God fights for you.#tn Heb “for the Lord your God, he [is] the one who fights for you.” 4 See, I have parceled out to your tribes these remaining nations,#tn Heb “I have assigned by lots to you these remaining nations as an inheritance for your tribes.” from the Jordan to the Mediterranean Sea#tn Heb “the Great Sea,” the typical designation for the Mediterranean Sea. in the west, including all the nations I defeated.#tn Heb “from the Jordan and all the nations which I cut off and the Great Sea [at] the place where the sun sets.” The relationship of the second half of the verse, which mentions nations already conquered, to the first half, which speaks of “remaining nations,” is difficult to understand. 5 The Lord your God will drive them out from before you and remove them,#tn The Hebrew text reads, “from before you.” This has not been included in the translation because it is redundant in English. so you can occupy#tn Or “take possession of.” their land as the Lord your God promised#tn Heb “said to.” you. 6 Be very strong! Carefully obey#tn Heb “Be strong so you can be careful to do.” all that is written in the law scroll of Moses so you won’t swerve from it to the right or the left, 7 or associate with these nations that remain near#tn Heb “with.” you. You must not invoke or make solemn declarations by the names of their gods!#tn Heb “and in the name of their gods you must not invoke and you must not make solemn declarations.” The words “and you must not make solemn declarations” are omitted in the LXX and may represent a later scribal addition to elucidate the immediately preceding command. The Hiphil of שָׁבַע (shava’) without an object occurs only here and in Josh 6:26. You must not worship#tn Or “serve.” or bow down to them! 8 But you must be loyal to#tn Heb “hug.” the Lord your God, as you have been#tn Heb “done.” to this very day.
9 “The Lord drove out from before you great and mighty nations; no one has been able to resist you#tn Heb “not a man has stood before you.” to this very day. 10 One of you makes a thousand run away,#tn Or “chases a thousand.” for the Lord your God fights for you#tn Heb “for the Lord your God, he [is] the one who fights for you.” as he promised you he would.#tn Heb “as he said to you.” 11 Watch yourselves carefully! Love the Lord your God!#tn Heb “Watch carefully yourselves so as to love the Lord your God.” 12 But if you ever turn away and make alliances with#tn Heb “and hug.” these nations that remain near you,#tn Heb “the remnant of the these nations, these nations that are with you.” and intermarry with them and establish friendly relations with them,#tn Heb “and go into them, and they into you.” 13 know for certain that the Lord our God will no longer drive out these nations from before you. They will trap and ensnare you;#tn Heb “be a trap and a snare to you.” they will be a whip that tears#tn Heb “in.” your sides and thorns that blind#tn Heb “thorns in your eyes.” your eyes until you disappear#tn Or “perish.” from this good land the Lord your God gave you.
14 “Look, today I am about to die.#tn Heb “go the way of all the earth.” You know with all your heart and being#tn Or “soul.” that not even one of all the faithful promises the Lord your God made to you is left unfulfilled; every one was realized – not one promise is unfulfilled!#tn Heb “one word from all these words which the Lord your God spoke to you has not fallen, the whole has come to pass for you, one word from it has not fallen.” 15 But in the same way every faithful promise the Lord your God made to you has been realized,#tn Heb “and it will be as every good word which the Lord your God spoke to you has come to pass.” it is just as certain, if you disobey, that the Lord will bring on you every judgment#tn Heb “so the Lord will bring every injurious [or “evil”] word [or “thing”] upon you.” until he destroys you from this good land which the Lord your God gave you. 16 If you violate the covenantal laws of the Lord your God which he commanded you to keep,#tn Heb “when you violate the covenant of the Lord your God which he commanded you.” and follow, worship, and bow down to other gods,#tn Heb “and you walk and serve other gods and bow down to them.” the Lord will be very angry with you and you will disappear#tn Or “perish.” quickly from the good land which he gave to you.”

Joshua 23
23
1And a long season after that the Lord had giuen rest vnto Israel from all their enemies round about, and Ioshua was olde, and stricken in age, 2Then Ioshua called all Israel, and their Elders, and their heads, and their iudges, and their officers, and said vnto them, I am old, and stricken in age. 3Also ye haue seene all that the Lord your God hath done vnto al these nations before you, howe the Lord your God him selfe hath fought for you. 4Beholde, I haue deuided vnto you by lot these nations that remaine, to be an inheritance according to your tribes, from Iorden, with all the nations that I haue destroyed, euen vnto the great Sea Westward. 5And the Lord your God shall expell them before you, and cast them out of your sight, and ye shall possesse their land, as the Lord your God hath said vnto you. 6Be ye therefore of a valiant courage, to obserue and doe all that is written in the booke of the Lawe of Moses, that ye turne not therefrom to the right hand nor to the left, 7Neither companie with these nations: that is, with them which are left with you, neither make mention of the name of their gods, nor cause to sweare by them, neither serue them nor bowe vnto them: 8But sticke fast vnto the Lord your God, as ye haue done vnto this day. 9For ye Lord hath cast out before you great nations and mightie, and no man hath stand before your face hitherto. 10One man of you shall chase a thousand: for the Lord your God, he fighteth for you, as he hath promised you. 11Take good heede therefore vnto your selues, that ye loue the Lord your God. 12Els, if ye goe backe, and cleaue vnto the rest of these nations: that is, of them that remaine with you, and shall make marriages with them, and goe vnto them, and they to you, 13Knowe ye for certaine, that the Lord your God will cast out no more of these nations from before you: but they shall be a snare and destruction vnto you, and a whip on your sides, and thornes in your eyes, vntill ye perish out of this good land, which ye Lord your God hath giue you. 14And beholde, this day do I enter into the way of all ye world, and ye know in al your heartes and in all your soules, that nothing hath failed of all the good things which the Lord your God promised you, but all are come to passe vnto you: nothing hath failed thereof. 15Therefore as all good things are come vpon you, which the Lord your God promised you, so shall the Lord bring vpon you euery euill thing, vntill he haue destroyed you out of this good land, which ye Lord your God hath giue you. 16When ye shall transgresse the couenant of the Lord your God, which he commanded you, and shall goe and serue other gods, and bowe your selues to them, then shall the wrath of the Lord waxe hote against you, and ye shall perish quickely out of the good lande which he hath giuen you.
