Simeon’s Tribal Lands
1 The second lot belonged to the tribe of Simeon by its clans.#tn Heb “and the second lot came out for Simeon, for the tribe of the sons of Simeon by their clans.” 2 Their assigned land included#tn Heb “and they had in their inheritance.” Beer Sheba,#tc The MT has “and Sheba” listed after “Beer Sheba.” The LXX suggests “Shema.” The Hebrew text appears to be corrupt, since the form “Sheba” duplicates the latter part of the preceding name. If Sheba (or Shema) is retained, the list numbers fourteen, one more than the number given in the concluding summary (v. 6). Moladah, 3 Hazar Shual, Balah, Ezem, 4 Eltolad, Bethul, Hormah, 5 Ziklag, Beth Marcaboth, Hazar Susah, 6 Beth Lebaoth, and Sharuhen – a total of thirteen cities and their towns, 7 Ain, Rimmon, Ether, and Ashan – a total of four cities and their towns, 8 as well as all the towns around these cities as far as Baalath Beer (Ramah of the Negev). This was the land assigned to the tribe of Simeon by its clans.#tn Heb “this was the inheritance of the tribe of the sons of Simeon.” 9 Simeon’s assigned land was taken from Judah’s allotted portion, for Judah’s territory was too large for them; so Simeon was assigned land within Judah.#tn Heb “from the portion of the sons of Judah was the inheritance of the sons of Simeon for the portion of the sons of Judah was too large for them, and the sons of Simeon received an inheritance in the midst of their inheritance.”
Zebulun’s Tribal Lands
10 The third lot belonged to the tribe of Zebulun#tn Heb “and the third lot came up for the sons of Zebulun.” by its clans. The border of their territory#tn Or “inheritance.” extended to Sarid. 11 Their border went up westward to Maralah and touched Dabbesheth and the valley near#tn Heb “in front of”; perhaps “east of.” Jokneam. 12 From Sarid it turned eastward#tn Heb “eastward toward the rising of the sun.” to the territory of Kisloth Tabor, extended to Daberath, and went up to Japhia. 13 From there it crossed eastward to Gath Hepher and Eth Kazin and extended to Rimmon, turning toward Neah. 14 It then turned on the north to Hannathon and ended at the Valley of Iphtah El. 15 Their territory included Kattah, Nahalal, Shimron, Idalah, and Bethlehem;#map For location see Map5-B1; Map7-E2; Map8-E2; Map10-B4. in all they had twelve cities and their towns.#tn Heb “Kattah, Nahalal, Shimron, Idalah, and Bethlehem, twelve cities and their towns.” The words “their territory included” and “in all they had” are supplied in the translation for clarification. 16 This was the land assigned to the tribe of Zebulun#tn Heb “this is the inheritance of the sons of Zebulun.” by its clans, including these cities and their towns.
Issachar’s Tribal Lands
17 The fourth lot belonged to the tribe of Issachar#tn Heb “the fourth lot came out for the sons of Issachar.” by its clans. 18 Their assigned land#tn Or “their inheritance.” included Jezreel, Kesulloth, Shunem, 19 Hapharaim, Shion, Anaharath, 20 Rabbith, Kishion, Ebez, 21 Remeth, En Gannim, En Haddah and Beth Pazzez. 22 Their border touched Tabor, Shahazumah, and Beth Shemesh, and ended at the Jordan. They had sixteen cities and their towns. 23 This was the land assigned to the tribe of Issachar#tn Heb “this was the inheritance of the tribe of the sons of Issachar.” by its clans, including the cities and their towns.
Asher’s Tribal Lands
24 The fifth lot belonged to the tribe of Asher#tn Heb “and the fifth lot came out for the tribe of the sons of Asher.” by its clans. 25 Their territory included Helkath, Hali, Beten, Acshaph, 26 Alammelech, Amad, and Mishal. Their border touched Carmel to the west and Shihor Libnath. 27 It turned eastward toward Beth Dagon, touched Zebulun and the Valley of Iphtah El to the north, as well as the Valley of Emek and Neiel, and extended to Cabul on the north#tn Heb “left.” 28 and on to Ebron,#tc Some Hebrew mss read “Abdon.” Rehob, Hammon, and Kanah, as far as Greater Sidon.#map For location see Map1-A1; JP3-F3; JP4-F3. 29 It then turned toward Ramah as far as the fortified city of Tyre,#map For location see Map1-A2; Map2-G2; Map4-A1; JP3-F3; JP4-F3. turned to Hosah, and ended at the sea near Hebel, Aczib, 30 Umah, Aphek, and Rehob. In all they had#tn The words “in all they had” are supplied in the translation for clarification. twenty-two cities and their towns. 31 This was the land assigned to the tribe of Asher#tn Heb “this was the inheritance of the tribe of the sons of Asher.” by its clans, including these cities and their towns.
Naphtali’s Tribal Lands
32 The sixth lot belonged to the tribe of Naphtali#tn Heb “the sixth lot came out for the sons of Naphtali, for the sons of Naphtali.” by its clans. 33 Their border started at Heleph and the oak of Zaanannim, went to Adami Nekeb, Jabneel and on to Lakkum,#tn Heb “and their border was from Heleph, from the oak of Zaanannim, and Adami Nekeb, and Jabneel to Lakkum.” and ended at the Jordan River.#tn The word “River” is not in the Hebrew text, but has been supplied for clarity. 34 It turned westward to Aznoth Tabor, extended from there to Hukok, touched Zebulun on the south, Asher on the west, and the Jordan#tc The MT reads “Judah, the Jordan”; the LXX omits “Judah.” Perhaps there was a town named Judah, distinct from the tribe of Judah, located near the northern end of the Jordan. on the east. 35 The fortified cities included Ziddim, Zer, Hammath, Rakkath, Kinnereth, 36 Adamah, Ramah, Hazor,#map For location see Map1-D2; Map2-D3; Map3-A2; Map4-C1. 37 Kedesh, Edrei, En Hazor, 38 Yiron,#sn Instead of Yiron some English translations read Iron. Migdal El, Horem, Beth Anath, and Beth Shemesh. In all they had#tn The words “in all they had” are supplied in the translation for clarification. nineteen cities and their towns. 39 This was the land assigned to the tribe of Naphtali#tn Heb “this was the inheritance of the tribe of the sons of Naphtali.” by its clans, including the cities and their towns.

They put the sword to it, took possession of it, and lived in it. They renamed it#tn Heb “Leshem.” The pronoun (“it”) has replaced the name “Leshem” in the translation for stylistic reasons. Dan after their ancestor.#tn Heb “according to the name of their father.”) 48 This was the land assigned to the tribe of Dan#tn Heb “this was the inheritance of the tribe of the sons of Dan.” by its clans, including these cities and their towns.
Joshua Receives Land
49 When they finished dividing the land into its regions, the Israelites gave Joshua son of Nun some land.#tn Heb “an inheritance in their midst.” 50 As the Lord had instructed, they gave him the city he requested – Timnath Serah in the Ephraimite hill country. He built up the city and lived in it.
51 These are the land assignments which Eleazar the priest, Joshua son of Nun, and the Israelite tribal leaders#tn Heb “the leaders of the fathers of the tribes.” made by drawing lots in Shiloh before the Lord at the entrance of the tent of meeting.#tn Heb “at the entrance of the tent of assembly.”sn On the tent of meeting see Exod 33:7-11. Joshua 19
19
1And the second lot came out to Simeon, euen for the tribe of the children of Simeon according to their families: and their inheritance was in the middes of the inheritance of the children of Iudah. 2Nowe they had in their inheritance, Beersheba, and Sheba, and Moladah, 3And Hazur-shual, and Balah, and Azem, 4And Eltolad, and Bethul, and Hormah, 5And Ziklag, and Beth-marcaboth, and Hazar-susah, 6And Beth-lebaoth, and Sharuhen: thirteene cities with their villages. 7Ain, Remmon, and Ether, and Ashan: foure cities with their villages. 8And all the villages that were round about these cities, vnto Baalathbeer, and Ramath Southward: this is the inheritance of the tribe of the children of Simeon according to their families. 9Out of the portion of the children of Iudah came ye inheritance of the childre of Simeon: for the part of ye children of Iudah was too much for them: therefore the children of Simeon had their inheritance within their inheritance. 10Also the third lot arose for the children of Zebulun according to their families: and the coastes of their inheritance came to Sarid, 11And their border goeth vp Westwarde, euen to Maralah, and reacheth to Dabbasheth, and meeteth with the riuer that lyeth before Iokneam, 12And turneth from Sarid Eastward towarde the sunne rising vnto the border of Chisloth-tabor, and goeth out to Daberath, and ascendeth to Iaphia, 13And from thence goeth along Eastwarde towarde the sunne rising to Gittah-hepher to Ittah-kazin, and goeth foorth to Rimmon, and turneth to Neah. 14And this border compasseth it on ye North side to Hannathon, and the endes thereof are in the valley of Iiphtah-el, 15And Kattath, and Nahallal, and Shimron, and Idalah, and Beth-lehem: twelue cities with their villages. 16This is the inheritance of the children of Zebulun according to their families: that is, these cities and their villages. 17The fourth lot came out to Issachar, euen for the children of Issachar according to their families. 18And their coast was Izreelah, and Chesulloth, and Shunem, 19And Hapharaim, and Shion, and Anaharath, 20And Harabbith, and Kishion, and Abez, 21And Remeth, and En-gannim, and Enhaddah, and Beth-pazzez. 22And this coast reacheth to Tabor, and Shahazimath, and Beth-shemesh, and the endes of their coast reach to Iorden: sixteene cities with their villages. 23This is the inheritance of the tribe of the children of Issachar according to their families: that is, the cities, and their villages. 24Also the fift lot came out for the tribe of the children of Asher according to their families. 25And their coast was Helcath, and Hali, and Beten, and Achshaph, 26And Alammelech, and Amad, and Misheal, and came to Carmel Westward, and to Shihor Libnath, 27And turneth towarde the sunne rising to Beth-dagon, and commeth to Zebulun, and to the valley of Iiphtah-el, toward the Northside of Beth-emek, and Neiel, and goeth out on the left side of Cabul, 28And to Ebron, and Rehob, and Hammon, and Kanah, vnto great Zidon. 29Then the coast turneth to Ramah and to the strong citie of Zor, and this border turneth to Hosah, and the ends thereof are at the Sea from Hebel to Achzib, 30Vmmah also and Aphek, and Rehob: two and twentie cities with their villages. 31This is the inheritance of the tribe of the children of Asher according to their families: that is, these cities and their villages. 32The sixt lot came out to the children of Naphtali, euen to the children of Naphtali according to their families. 33And their coast was from Heleph, and from Allon in Zaanannim, and Adaminekeb, and Iabneel, euen to Lakum, and the ends thereof are at Iorden. 34So this coast turneth Westwarde to Aznoth-tabor, and goeth out from thence to Hukkok, and reacheth to Zebulun on the Southside, and goeth to Asher on the Westside, and to Iudah by Iorden toward the sunne rising. 35And the strong cities are Ziddim, Zer, and Hammath, Rakkath, and Cinneereth, 36And Adamah, and Ramah, and Hazor, 37And Kedesh, and Edrei, and En-hazor, 38And Iron, and Migdal-el, Horem, and Beth-anah, and Beth-shemesh: nineteene cities with their villages. 39This is the inheritance of the tribe of the children of Naphtali according to their families: that is, the cities and their villages. 40The seuenth lot came out for the tribe of the children of Dan according to their families. 41And the coast of their inheritance was Zorah, and Eshtaol, and Ir-shemesh, 42And Shaalabbin, and Aiialon, and Ithlah, 43And Elon, and Temnathah, and Ekron, 44And Eltekeh, and Gibbethon, and Baalah, 45And Iehud, and Bene-berak, and Gath-rimmon, 46And Me-iarkon, and Rakkon, with the border that lieth before Iapho. 47But the coastes of the children of Dan fell out too litle for them: therefore the children of Dan went vp to fight against Leshem, and tooke it, and smote it with the edge of the sworde, and possessed it, and dwelt therein, and called Leshem, Dan after the name of Dan their father. 48This is the inheritance of the tribe of the childre of Dan according to their families: that is, these cities and their villages. 49When they had made an ende of deuiding the lande by the coastes thereof, then the children of Israel gaue an inheritance vnto Ioshua the sonne of Nun among them. 50According to the worde of the Lord they gaue him the citie which hee asked, euen Timnath-serah in mount Ephraim: and hee built the citie and dwelt therein. 51These are ye heritages which Eleazar the Priest, and Ioshua the sonne of Nun, and the chiefe fathers of the tribes of the children of Israel deuided by lot in Shiloh before the Lord at the doore of the Tabernacle of the Congregation: so they made an ende of deuiding the countrey.
