Exodus 39

The Making of the Priestly Garments
1 From the blue, purple, and scarlet yarn they made woven garments for serving in the sanctuary; they made holy garments that were for Aaron, just as the Lord had commanded Moses.#sn This chapter also will be almost identical to the instructions given earlier, with a few changes along the way.
The Ephod
2 He made the ephod of gold, blue, purple, scarlet, and fine twisted linen. 3 They hammered the gold into thin sheets and cut it into narrow strips to weave#tn The verb is the infinitive that means “to do, to work.” It could be given a literal rendering: “to work [them into] the blue….” Weaving or embroidering is probably what is intended. them into the blue, purple, and scarlet yarn, and into the fine linen, the work of an artistic designer. 4 They made shoulder pieces for it, attached to two of its corners, so it could be joined together. 5 The artistically woven waistband of the ephod that was on it was like it, of one piece with it,#tn Heb “from it” or the same. of gold, blue, purple, and scarlet yarn and fine twisted linen, just as the Lord had commanded Moses.
6 They set the onyx stones in gold filigree settings, engraved as with the engravings of a seal#tn Or “as seals are engraved.” with the names of the sons of Israel.#sn The twelve names were those of Israel’s sons. The idea was not the remembrance of the twelve sons as such, but the twelve tribes that bore their names. 7 He put#tn Or “attached.” them on the shoulder pieces of the ephod as stones of memorial for the Israelites, just as the Lord had commanded Moses.
The Breastpiece of Decision
8 He made the breastpiece, the work of an artistic designer, in the same fashion as the ephod, of gold, blue, purple, and scarlet, and fine twisted linen. 9 It was square – they made the breastpiece doubled, nine inches long and nine inches wide when doubled. 10 They set on it#tn That is, they set in mountings. four rows of stones: a row with a ruby, a topaz, and a beryl – the first row; 11 and the second row, a turquoise, a sapphire, and an emerald; 12 and the third row, a jacinth, an agate, and an amethyst; 13 and the fourth row, a chrysolite, an onyx, and a jasper. They were enclosed in gold filigree settings. 14 The stones were for the names of the sons of Israel, twelve, corresponding to the number of#tn The phrase “the number of” has been supplied. their names. Each name corresponding to one of the twelve tribes was like the engravings of a seal.
15 They made for the breastpiece braided chains like cords of pure gold, 16 and they made two gold filigree settings and two gold rings, and they attached the two rings to the upper#tn Here “upper” has been supplied. two ends of the breastpiece. 17 They attached the two gold chains to the two rings at the ends of the breastpiece; 18 the other#tn Here “other” has been supplied. two ends of the two chains they attached to the two settings, and they attached them to the shoulder pieces of the ephod at the front of it. 19 They made two rings of gold and put them on the other#tn Here “other” has been supplied. two ends of the breastpiece on its edge, which is on the inner side of the ephod.#tn Heb “homeward side.” 20 They made two more#tn Here “more” has been supplied. gold rings and attached them to the bottom of the two shoulder pieces on the front of the ephod, close to the juncture above the waistband of the ephod. 21 They tied the breastpiece by its rings to the rings of the ephod by blue cord, so that it was above the waistband of the ephod, so that the breastpiece would not be loose from the ephod, just as the Lord had commanded Moses.
The Other Garments
22 He made the robe of the ephod completely blue, the work of a weaver. 23 There was an opening in the center of the robe, like the opening of a collar, with an edge all around the opening so that it could not be torn. 24 They made pomegranates of blue, purple, and scarlet yarn and twisted linen#tn The word is simply “twined” or “twisted.” It may refer to the twisted linen that so frequently is found in these lists; or, it may refer to the yarn twisted. The LXX reads “fine twined linen.” This is not found in the text of Exod 28:33, except in Smr and LXX. around the hem of the robe. 25 They made bells of pure gold and attached the bells between the pomegranates around the hem of the robe between the pomegranates. 26 There was#tn The words “there was” are supplied in the translation for stylistic reasons. a bell and a pomegranate, a bell and a pomegranate, all around the hem of the robe, to be used in ministering,#tn The infinitive “to minister” is present; “to be used” is supplied from the context. just as the Lord had commanded Moses.
27 They made tunics of fine linen – the work of a weaver, for Aaron and for his sons – 28 and the turban of fine linen, the headbands of fine linen, and the undergarments of fine twisted linen. 29 The sash was of fine twisted linen and blue, purple, and scarlet yarn, the work of an embroiderer, just as the Lord had commanded Moses. 30 They made a plate, the holy diadem, of pure gold and wrote on it an inscription, as on the engravings of a seal, “Holiness to the Lord.” 31 They attached to it a blue cord, to attach it to the turban above, just as the Lord had commanded Moses.
Moses Inspects the Sanctuary
32#sn The last sections of the book bring several themes together to a full conclusion. Not only is it the completion of the tabernacle, it is the fulfillment of God’s plan revealed at the beginning of the book, i.e., to reside with his people. So all the work of the tabernacle, the tent of meeting, was completed, and the Israelites did according to all that the Lord had commanded Moses – they did it exactly so. 33 They brought the tabernacle to Moses, the tent and all its furnishings, clasps, frames, bars, posts, and bases; 34 and the coverings of ram skins dyed red, the covering of fine leather,#tn See the note on this phrase in Exod 25:5. and the protecting#tn Or “shielding” (NIV); NASB “the screening veil.” curtain; 35 the ark of the testimony and its poles, and the atonement lid; 36 the table, all its utensils, and the Bread of the Presence; 37 the pure#tn Possibly meaning “pure gold lampstand.” lampstand, its lamps, with the lamps set in order, and all its accessories, and oil for the light; 38 and the gold altar, and the anointing oil, and the fragrant incense; and the curtain for the entrance to the tent; 39 the bronze altar and its bronze grating, its poles, and all its utensils; the large basin with its pedestal; 40 the hangings of the courtyard, its posts and its bases, and the curtain for the gateway of the courtyard, its ropes and its tent pegs, and all the furnishings#tn Heb “utensils, vessels.” for the service of the tabernacle, for the tent of meeting; 41 the woven garments for serving#tn The form is the infinitive construct; it means the clothes to be used “to minister” in the holy place. in the sanctuary, the holy garments for Aaron the priest, and the garments for his sons to minister as priests.
42 The Israelites did all the work according to all that the Lord had commanded Moses. 43 Moses inspected#tn Or “examined” (NASB, TEV); NCV “looked closely at.” all the work – and#tn The deictic particle draws attention to what he saw in such a way as to give the reader Moses’ point of view and a sense of his pleasure: “and behold, they…” they had done it just as the Lord had commanded – they had done it exactly – and Moses blessed them.#sn The situation and wording in Exod 39:43 are reminiscent of Gen 1:28 and 31, with the motifs of blessing people and inspecting what has been made.

Exodus 39
39
1Moreouer they made garments of ministration to minister in the Sanctuarie of blewe silke, and purple, and skarlet: they made also the holy garments for Aaron, as the Lord had comanded Moses. 2So he made the Ephod of gold, blewe silke, and purple, and skarlet, and fine twined linen. 3And they did beate the golde into thinne plates, and cut it into wiers, to worke it in ye blewe silke and in the purple, and in the skarlet, and in the fine linen, with broydred worke. 4For the which they made shoulders to couple together: for it was closed by the two edges thereof. 5And the broydred garde of his Ephod that was vpon him, was of the same stuffe, and of like worke: euen of golde, of blewe silke, and purple, and skarlet, and fine twined linen, as the Lord had commanded Moses. 6And they wrought two Onix stones closed in ouches of golde, and graued, as signets are grauen, with the names of the children of Israel, 7And put them on the shoulders of the Ephod, as stones for a remembrance of the children of Israel, as the Lord had commanded Moses. 8Also he made the brestplate of broydred worke like the worke of the Ephod: to wit, of gold, blewe silke, and purple, and skarlet, and fine twined linen. 9They made the brest plate double, and it was square, an hand breadth long, and an hand breadth broad: it was also double. 10And they filled it with foure rowes of stones. The order was thus, a Rubie, a Topaze, and a Carbuncle in the first rowe: 11And in the seconde rowe, an Emeraude, a Saphir, and a Diamond: 12Also in the thirde rowe, a Turkeis, an Achate, and an Hematite: 13Likewise in the fourth rowe, a Chrysolite, an Onix, and a Iasper: closed and set in ouches of golde. 14So the stones were according to the names of the children of Israel, euen twelue after their names, grauen like signets euery one after his name according to the twelue tribes. 15After, they made vpon the brest plate cheines at the endes, of wrethen worke and pure golde. 16They made also two bosses of golde, and two golde rings, and put the two rings in the two corners of the brest plate. 17And they put ye two wrethe cheines of gold in the two rings, in the corners of the brest plate. 18Also the two other endes of the two wrethen chaines they fastened in the two bosses, and put the on the shoulders of the Ephod vpon the forefront of it. 19Likewise they made two rings of gold, and put them in the two other corners of the brest plate vpon the edge of it, which was on the inside of the Ephod. 20They made also two other golden rings, and put them on the two sides of the Ephod, beneath on the foreside of it, and ouer against his coupling aboue the broydered garde of the Ephod. 21Then they fastened the brest plate by his rings vnto the rings of the Ephod, with a lace of blewe silke, that it might bee fast vpon the broydered garde of the Ephod, and that the brest plate should not be loosed from the Ephod, as the Lord had commanded Moses. 22Moreouer, he made the robe of the Ephod of wouen worke, altogether of blewe silke. 23And the hole of the robe was in the middes of it, as the coller of an habergeon, with an edge about the coller, that it shoulde not rent. 24And they made vpon the skirts of the robe pomegranates, of blewe silke, and purple, and skarlet, and fine linen twined. 25They made also belles of pure gold and put the belles betweene the pomegranates vpon the skirtes of the robe rounde about betweene the pomegranates. 26A bel and a pomegranate, a bel and a pomegranate round about the skirts of the robe to minister in, as the Lord had commanded Moses. 27After, they made coates of fine linen, of wouen worke for Aaron and for his sonnes. 28And the miter of fine linen, and goodly bonnets of fine linen, and linen breeches of fine twined linen, 29And the girdle of fine twined linen, and of blew silke, and purple, and skarlet, euen of needle worke, as the Lord had commanded Moses. 30Finally they made the plate for the holy crowne of fine golde, and wrote vpon it a superscription like to the grauing of a signet, HOLINES TO THE Lord. 31And they tied vnto it a lace of blewe silke to fasten it on hie vpon the miter, as the Lord had commanded Moses. 32Thus was all the worke of the Tabernacle, euen of the Tabernacle of the Congregation finished: and the children of Israel did according to al that the Lord had commanded Moses: so dyd they. 33Afterwarde they brought the Tabernacle vnto Moses, the Tabernacle and al his instruments, his taches, his boards, his barres, and his pillars, and his sockets, 34And the couering of rammes skinnes died red, and the couerings of badgers skinnes, and the couering vaile. 35The Arke of the Testimony, and the barres thereof, and the Merciseate, 36The Table, with all the instruments thereof, and the shewebread, 37The pure Candlesticke, the lampes thereof, euen the lampes set in order, and all the instruments thereof, and the oyle for light: 38Also the golden Altar and the anoynting oyle, and the sweete incense, and the hanging of the Tabernacle doore, 39The brasen Altar with his grate of brasse, his barres and all his instruments, the Lauer and his foote. 40The curtaines of the court with his pillars, and his sockets, and the hanging to the court gate, and his cordes, and his pinnes, and all the instruments of the seruice of the Tabernacle, called the Tabernacle of the Congregation. 41Finally, the ministring garmentes to serue in the Sanctuarie, and the holy garmentes for Aaron the Priest, and his sonnes garmentes to minister in the Priestes office. 42According to euery poynt that the Lord had commanded Moses, so the children of Israel made all the worke. 43And Moses beheld al the worke, and behold, they had done it as the Lord had commanded: so had they done: and Moses blessed them.
