Jehoshaphat Becomes King
1 His son Jehoshaphat replaced him as king and solidified his rule over Israel.#tn Heb “and strengthened himself over Israel.” 2 He placed troops in all of Judah’s fortified cities and posted garrisons#tn Or perhaps, “governors.” throughout the land of Judah and in the cities of Ephraim that his father Asa had seized.
3 The Lord was with Jehoshaphat because he followed in his ancestor#tn Heb “father.” David’s footsteps at the beginning of his reign.#tn Heb “for he walked in the ways of David his father [in] the beginning [times].” He did not seek the Baals, 4 but instead sought the God of his ancestors#tn Heb “fathers.” and obeyed#tn Heb “walked in.” his commands, unlike the Israelites.#tn Heb “and not like the behavior of Israel.” 5 The Lord made his kingdom secure;#tn Heb “established the kingdom in his hand.” all Judah brought tribute to Jehoshaphat, and he became very wealthy and greatly respected.#tn Heb “and he had wealth and honor in abundance.” 6 He was committed to following the Lord;#tn Heb “and his heart was high in the ways of the Lord.” Perhaps גָּבַהּ (gavah, “be high”) here means “be cheerful” (HALOT 171 s.v.) or “be encouraged” (BDB 147 s.v. 3.a). he even removed the high places and Asherah poles from Judah.
7 In the third year of his reign he sent his officials Ben-Hail, Obadiah, Zechariah, Nethanel, and Micaiah to teach in the cities of Judah. 8 They were accompanied by the Levites Shemaiah, Nethaniah, Zebadiah, Asahel, Shemiramoth, Jehonathan, Adonijah, Tobijah, and Tob-Adonijah, and by the priests Elishama and Jehoram. 9 They taught throughout Judah, taking with them the scroll of the law of the Lord. They traveled to all the cities of Judah and taught the people.
10 The Lord put fear into all the kingdoms surrounding Judah;#tn Heb “and the terror of the Lord was upon all the kingdoms of the lands which were surrounding Judah.” they did not make war with Jehoshaphat. 11 Some of the Philistines brought Jehoshaphat tribute, including a load of silver. The Arabs brought him 7,700 rams and 7,700 goats from their flocks.
12 Jehoshaphat’s power kept increasing. He built fortresses and storage cities throughout Judah. 13 He had many supplies stored in the cities of Judah and an army of skilled warriors stationed in Jerusalem.#tn Heb “and many supplies were his in the cities of Judah, and men of war, warriors of skill in Jerusalem.”map For location see Map5-B1; Map6-F3; Map7-E2; Map8-F2; Map10-B3; JP1-F4; JP2-F4; JP3-F4; JP4-F4. 14 These were their divisions by families:
There were a thousand officers from Judah.#tn Or perhaps “from Judah, commanders of the thousands.” Adnah the commander led 300,000 skilled warriors, 15 Jehochanan the commander led 280,000, 16 and Amasiah son of Zikri, who volunteered to serve the Lord, led 200,000 skilled warriors.
17 From Benjamin, Eliada, a skilled warrior, led 200,000 men who were equipped with bows and shields, 18 and Jehozabad led 180,000 trained warriors.
19 These were the ones who served the king, besides those whom the king placed in the fortified cities throughout Judah.

2 Chronicles 17

Jehoshaphat Reigns in Judah
1And Jehoshaphat his son reigned in his place, and he strengthened himself against Israel. 2And he put troops in all the fortified cities of Judah, and put garrisons in the land of Judah and in the cities of Ephraim that Asa his father had taken. 3And Yahweh was with Jehoshaphat, because he walked in the former ways of David his father and did not seek after the Baals, 4but he sought after the God of his ancestors#Or “fathers” and walked in his commandments and not according to the works of Israel. 5So Yahweh established the kingdom in his hand. And all Judah gave tribute to Jehoshaphat, and he had much wealth and honor. 6And his heart was courageous in the ways of Yahweh. Moreover, he removed the high places and the Asherahs from Judah.
7In the third year of his reign he sent his officials, Ben-Hail, Obadiah, Zechariah, Nethanel, and Micaiah, to teach in the cities of Judah; 8and with them the Levites Shemaiah, Nethaniah, Zebadiah, Asahel, Shemiramoth, Jehonathan, Adonijah, Tobijah, and Tob-Adonijah; and with them the priests Elisham and Joram. 9And they taught in Judah, and the scroll of the law of Yahweh was with them when they went around in all the cities of Judah, and they taught the people.
10And the fear of Yahweh was upon all the kingdoms of the lands surrounding Judah, and they did not make war against Jehoshaphat. 11And some of the Philistines brought a gift and silver to Jehoshaphat as tribute. The Arabians also brought him seven thousand seven hundred sheep and seven thousand seven hundred goats.
12And Jehoshaphat grew greater and greater,#Literally “was going and becoming great to the height” and he built fortresses and storage cities in Judah. 13And he had many supplies in the cities of Judah and mighty warriors for battle in Jerusalem. 14Now these were their enrollment by the house of their ancestors:#Or “fathers” of Judah, the commanders of thousands: Adnah, the commander, and with him were three hundred thousand mighty armed warriors; 15and at his side,#Or “hand” Jehohanan the commander, and with him were two hundred and eighty thousand; 16and at his side,#Or “hand” Amasiah the son of Zicri, who had made a freewill offering to Yahweh, and with him were two hundred thousand mighty armed warriors. 17And from Benjamin: Eliada, a powerful mighty warrior, and with him were two hundred thousand armed with bow and shield; 18and at his side,#Or “hand” Jehozabad, and with him were one hundred and eighty thousand armed for war. 19These were serving the king, besides those whom the king had placed in the fortified cities throughout all Judah.
