Psalms 143
143
A Prayer Not to Be Killed
A psalm of David.
1Lord, hear my prayer;
listen to my cry for mercy.
Answer me
because you are loyal and good.
2Don’t judge me, your servant,
because no one alive is right before you.
3My enemies are chasing me;
they crushed me to the ground.
They made me live in darkness
like those long dead.
4I am afraid;
my courage is gone.
5I remember what happened long ago;
I consider everything you have done.
I think about all you have made.
6I lift my hands to you in prayer.
As a dry land needs rain, I thirst for you.Selah
7Lord, answer me quickly,
because I am getting weak.
Don’t turn away from me,
or I will be like those who are dead.
8Tell me in the morning about your love,
because I trust you.
Show me what I should do,
because my prayers go up to you.
9Lord, save me from my enemies;
I hide in you.
10Teach me to do what you want,
because you are my God.
Let your good Spirit
lead me on level ground.
11Lord, let me live
so people will praise you.
In your goodness
save me from my troubles.
12In your love defeat my enemies.
Destroy all those who trouble me,
because I am your servant.

Psalms 143
143
Psalm 143
A psalm of David.
1Listen to my prayer, LORD!
Because of your faithfulness, hear my requests for mercy!
Because of your righteousness, answer me!
2Please don’t bring your servant to judgment,
because no living thing is righteous before you.
3The enemy is chasing me,#143.3 Or my soul; also in 143:6, 8, 11-12
crushing my life in the dirt,
forcing me to live in the dark
like those who’ve been dead forever.
4My spirit is weak inside me—
inside, my mind is numb.
5I remember the days long past;
I meditate on all your deeds;
I contemplate your handiwork.
6I stretch out my hands to you;
my whole being is like dry dirt, thirsting for you.#143.6 Heb lacks thirsting. Selah
7Answer me, LORD—and quickly! My breath is fading.
Don’t hide your face from me
or I’ll be like those going down to the pit!
8Tell me all about your faithful love come morning time,
because I trust you.
Show me the way I should go,
because I offer my life up to you.
9Deliver me from my enemies, LORD!
I seek protection from you.#143.9 Heb uncertain; MT to you I have hidden
10Teach me to do what pleases you,
because you are my God.
Guide me by your good spirit
into good land.
11Make me live again, LORD, for your name’s sake.
Bring me out of distress because of your righteousness.
12Wipe out my enemies because of your faithful love.
Destroy everyone who attacks me,
because I am your servant.
