Jesus Rises from the Dead
1The day after the Sabbath day was the first day of the week. At dawn on the first day, Mary Magdalene and another woman named Mary went to look at the tomb.
2At that time there was a strong earthquake. An angel of the Lord came down from heaven, went to the tomb, and rolled the stone away from the entrance. Then he sat on the stone. 3He was shining as bright as lightning, and his clothes were white as snow. 4The soldiers guarding the tomb shook with fear because of the angel, and they became like dead men.
5The angel said to the women, “Don’t be afraid. I know that you are looking for Jesus, who has been crucified. 6He is not here. He has risen from the dead as he said he would. Come and see the place where his body was. 7And go quickly and tell his followers, ‘Jesus has risen from the dead. He is going into Galilee ahead of you, and you will see him there.’ ” Then the angel said, “Now I have told you.”
8The women left the tomb quickly. They were afraid, but they were also very happy. They ran to tell Jesus’ followers what had happened. 9Suddenly, Jesus met them and said, “Greetings.” The women came up to him, took hold of his feet, and worshiped him. 10Then Jesus said to them, “Don’t be afraid. Go and tell my followers to go on to Galilee, and they will see me there.”
The Soldiers Report to the Leaders
11While the women went to tell Jesus’ followers, some of the soldiers who had been guarding the tomb went into the city to tell the leading priests everything that had happened. 12Then the priests met with the elders and made a plan. They paid the soldiers a large amount of money 13and said to them, “Tell the people that Jesus’ followers came during the night and stole the body while you were asleep. 14If the governor hears about this, we will satisfy him and save you from trouble.” 15So the soldiers kept the money and did as they were told. And that story is still spread among the people even today.
Jesus Talks to His Followers
16The eleven followers went to Galilee to the mountain where Jesus had told them to go. 17On the mountain they saw Jesus and worshiped him, but some of them did not believe it was really Jesus. 18Then Jesus came to them and said, “All power in heaven and on earth is given to me. 19So go and make followers of all people in the world. Baptize them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. 20Teach them to obey everything that I have taught you, and I will be with you always, even until the end of this age.”

The Resurrection of Jesus
1After the Sabbath ended, at the first light of dawn on the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary # 28:1 This was Mary, the mother of Jacob and Joseph. See Mark 16:1; Luke 24:10. went to take a look at the tomb. 2-4Suddenly, the earth shook violently beneath their feet as the angel of the Yahweh # 28:2–4 As translated from the Aramaic. descended from heaven. Lightning flashed around him and his robe was dazzling white! The guards were stunned and terrified—lying motionless like dead men. Then the angel walked up to the tomb, rolled away the stone, and sat on top of it!
5The women were breathless and terrified, until the angel said to them, “There’s no reason to be afraid. I know you’re here looking for Jesus, who was crucified. 6He isn’t here—he has risen victoriously, # 28:6 As translated from the Aramaic. just as he said! Come inside the tomb and see the place where our Lord was lying. # 28:6 As translated from the Aramaic and some Greek texts. 7Then run and tell his disciples that he has risen from the dead! I give you his message: ‘I am going ahead of you to Galilee and you will see me there.’ ” # 28:7 Or ‘He is going ahead of you to Galilee and you will see him there. Behold, I have told you!’ ”
8They rushed quickly to tell his disciples, and their hearts were filled with fear, awe, and great joy at the same time.
9Along the way, Jesus suddenly appeared in front of them and said, “Rejoice!” # 28:9 Or “Be rejoicing!” They were so overwhelmed by seeing him that they bowed down and grasped his feet in adoring worship.
10Then Jesus said to them, “Throw off all your fears. Go and tell my brothers # 28:10 What an incredible truth! Believers are now his brothers and sisters. See Heb. 2:11. to go to Galilee. They will find me there.”
The Guards Report What They Witnessed
11After the women left the tomb, a few of the guards went into Jerusalem and told the chief priests everything they had seen and heard. 12So the chief priests called a meeting with all the religious leaders and came up with a plan. They bribed the guards with a large sum of money 13and told them, “Tell everyone, ‘While we were asleep, his disciples came at night and stole his body!’ 14If Pilate finds out about this, don’t worry. We’ll make sure you don’t get blamed.” 15So they took the money and did as they were told. (That is why the story of the guards is still circulated among the Jews to this day.)
The Great Commission
16Meanwhile, the eleven disciples heard the wonderful news from the women and left for Galilee, to the mountain where Jesus had arranged to meet them. 17The moment they saw him, they worshiped him, but some still had lingering doubts.
18Then Jesus came close to them and said, “All authority of the universe has been given to me. # 28:18 There is a sentence found in the Aramaic that is missing in all but one Greek manuscript, which reads, “As my Father has sent me, so I send you.” 19Now wherever you go, make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. 20And teach them to faithfully follow # 28:20 The Aramaic is “keep” or “guard” (a fortress). all that I have commanded you. And never forget that I am with you every day, even to the completion of this age.” # 28:20 Or “I am with you all the appointed days” (Variorum Version).
