Luke 6

Jesus Is Lord over the Sabbath
1One Sabbath day Jesus was walking through some fields of grain. His followers picked the heads of grain, rubbed them in their hands, and ate them. 2Some Pharisees said, “Why do you do what is not lawful on the Sabbath day?”
3Jesus answered, “Have you not read what David did when he and those with him were hungry? 4He went into God’s house and took and ate the holy bread, which is lawful only for priests to eat. And he gave some to the people who were with him.” 5Then Jesus said to the Pharisees, “The Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath day.”
Jesus Heals a Man’s Hand
6On another Sabbath day Jesus went into the synagogue and was teaching, and a man with a crippled right hand was there. 7The teachers of the law and the Pharisees were watching closely to see if Jesus would heal on the Sabbath day so they could accuse him. 8But he knew what they were thinking, and he said to the man with the crippled hand, “Stand up here in the middle of everyone.” The man got up and stood there. 9Then Jesus said to them, “I ask you, which is lawful on the Sabbath day: to do good or to do evil, to save a life or to destroy it?” 10Jesus looked around at all of them and said to the man, “Hold out your hand.” The man held out his hand, and it was healed.
11But the Pharisees and the teachers of the law were very angry and discussed with each other what they could do to Jesus.
Jesus Chooses His Apostles
12At that time Jesus went off to a mountain to pray, and he spent the night praying to God. 13The next morning, Jesus called his followers to him and chose twelve of them, whom he named apostles: 14Simon (Jesus named him Peter), his brother Andrew, James, John, Philip, Bartholomew, 15Matthew, Thomas, James son of Alphaeus, Simon (called the Zealot), 16Judas son of James, and Judas Iscariot, who later turned Jesus over to his enemies.
Jesus Teaches and Heals
17Jesus and the apostles came down from the mountain, and he stood on level ground. A large group of his followers was there, as well as many people from all around Judea, Jerusalem, and the seacoast cities of Tyre and Sidon. 18They all came to hear Jesus teach and to be healed of their sicknesses, and he healed those who were troubled by evil spirits. 19All the people were trying to touch Jesus, because power was coming from him and healing them all.
20Jesus looked at his followers and said,
“You people who are poor are blessed,
because the kingdom of God belongs to you.
21You people who are now hungry are blessed,
because you will be satisfied.
You people who are now crying are blessed,
because you will laugh with joy.
22“People will hate you, shut you out, insult you, and say you are evil because you follow the Son of Man. But when they do, you will be blessed. 23Be full of joy at that time, because you have a great reward in heaven. Their ancestors did the same things to the prophets.
24“But how terrible it will be for you who are rich,
because you have had your easy life.
25How terrible it will be for you who are full now,
because you will be hungry.
How terrible it will be for you who are laughing now,
because you will be sad and cry.
26“How terrible when everyone says only good things about you, because their ancestors said the same things about the false prophets.
Love Your Enemies
27“But I say to you who are listening, love your enemies. Do good to those who hate you, 28bless those who curse you, pray for those who are cruel to you. 29If anyone slaps you on one cheek, offer him the other cheek, too. If someone takes your coat, do not stop him from taking your shirt. 30Give to everyone who asks you, and when someone takes something that is yours, don’t ask for it back. 31Do to others what you would want them to do to you. 32If you love only the people who love you, what praise should you get? Even sinners love the people who love them. 33If you do good only to those who do good to you, what praise should you get? Even sinners do that! 34If you lend things to people, always hoping to get something back, what praise should you get? Even sinners lend to other sinners so that they can get back the same amount! 35But love your enemies, do good to them, and lend to them without hoping to get anything back. Then you will have a great reward, and you will be children of the Most High God, because he is kind even to people who are ungrateful and full of sin. 36Show mercy, just as your Father shows mercy.
Look at Yourselves
37“Don’t judge others, and you will not be judged. Don’t accuse others of being guilty, and you will not be accused of being guilty. Forgive, and you will be forgiven. 38Give, and you will receive. You will be given much. Pressed down, shaken together, and running over, it will spill into your lap. The way you give to others is the way God will give to you.”
39Jesus told them this story: “Can a blind person lead another blind person? No! Both of them will fall into a ditch. 40A student is not better than the teacher, but the student who has been fully trained will be like the teacher.
41“Why do you notice the little piece of dust in your friend’s eye, but you don’t notice the big piece of wood in your own eye? 42How can you say to your friend, ‘Friend, let me take that little piece of dust out of your eye’ when you cannot see that big piece of wood in your own eye! You hypocrite! First, take the wood out of your own eye. Then you will see clearly to take the dust out of your friend’s eye.
Two Kinds of Fruit
43“A good tree does not produce bad fruit, nor does a bad tree produce good fruit. 44Each tree is known by its own fruit. People don’t gather figs from thornbushes, and they don’t get grapes from bushes. 45Good people bring good things out of the good they stored in their hearts. But evil people bring evil things out of the evil they stored in their hearts. People speak the things that are in their hearts.
Two Kinds of People
46“Why do you call me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ but do not do what I say? 47I will show you what everyone is like who comes to me and hears my words and obeys. 48That person is like a man building a house who dug deep and laid the foundation on rock. When the floods came, the water tried to wash the house away, but it could not shake it, because the house was built well. 49But the one who hears my words and does not obey is like a man who built his house on the ground without a foundation. When the floods came, the house quickly fell and was completely destroyed.”

Luqas (Luke) 6
6
1And it came to be on a Sabbath#Some manuscripts read: On the second Sabbath after the first. that He went through grainfields, and His taught ones were plucking the heads of grain and were eating, rubbing them with the hands.
2And some of the Pharisees said to them, “Why are you doing what is not right to do on the Sabbath?”
3And יהושע answering them, said, “Have you not read what Dawiḏ did when he was hungry, he and those who were with him,
4how he went into the House of Elohim, took and ate the showbread, and also gave some to those with him, which is not right for any but the priests to eat?”
5And He said to them, “The Son of Aḏam is Master of the Sabbath.”#See Mat. 12:8
6And it also came to be on another Sabbath, that He entered into the congregation and taught, and there was a man whose right hand was withered.
7And the scribes and Pharisees were watching Him closely, whether He would heal on the Sabbath, for them to find an accusation against Him.
8And He knew their thoughts, and said to the man who had the withered hand, “Rise and stand in the midst.” And he rose up and stood.
9Then יהושע said to them, “I ask you, is it right to do good on the Sabbath, or to do evil, to save life or to destroy it?”
10And looking around at them all, He said to the man, “Stretch out your hand.” And he did so, and his hand was restored sound as the other.
11But they were filled with folly, and were speaking with one another what they should do to יהושע.
12And in those days it came to be that He went out to the mountain to pray, and was spending the night in prayer to Elohim.
13And when it became day, He called near His taught ones and chose from them twelve, whom He also named emissaries:
14Shim‛on whom He also named Kĕpha, and his brother Andri, Ya‛aqoḇ and Yoḥanan, Philip and Bartholomi,
15Mattithyahu and T’oma, Ya‛aqoḇ the son of Alphai and Shim‛on, the one called the Ardent One,
16Yehuḏah the son of Ya‛aqoḇ and Yehuḏah from Qerioth who also became the betrayer.
17And coming down with them He stood on a level place with a crowd of His taught ones and a great number of people from all Yehuḏah and Yerushalayim, and from the coast country of Tsor and Tsiḏon, who came to hear Him, and to be healed of their diseases,
18and those who were troubled with unclean spirits – and they were healed.
19And all the crowd were seeking to touch Him, for power went out from Him, and healing them all.
20And He, lifting up His eyes toward His taught ones, said, “Blessed are the poor,#See Isa. 11:4; James 2:5 because yours is the reign of Elohim.
21“Blessed are you who hunger now, because you shall be satisfied. Blessed are you who weep now, because you shall laugh.
22“Blessed are you when men shall hate you, and when they shall cut you off, and shall reproach you, and cast out your name as wicked, for the sake of the Son of Aḏam.
23“Rejoice in that day and leap for joy, for look, your reward is great in the heaven, for that is how their fathers treated the prophets.
24“But woe to you who are rich, because you are receiving your comfort.
25“Woe to you who have been filled, because you shall hunger. Woe to you who are laughing now, because you shall mourn and weep.
26“Woe to you when all men speak well of you, for thus their fathers did to the false prophets.
27“But I say to you who are hearing: Love your enemies, do good to those hating you.
28“Bless those cursing you, and pray for those insulting you.
29“And to him who hits you on the one cheek, offer the other also. And from him who takes away your outer garment, do not withhold the inner garment either.
30“And give to everyone who asks of you. And from him who takes away what is yours do not ask it back.
31“And as you wish men should do to you, you also do to them in the same way.
32“And if you love those loving you, what favour have you? For sinners, too, love those loving them.
33“And if you do good to those doing good to you, what favour have you? For even sinners do the same.
34“And if you lend to those from whom you expect to receive back, what favour have you? For even sinners lend to sinners to receive as much back.
35Rather, love your enemies, and do good, and lend, expecting none in return. And your reward shall be great, and you shall be sons of the Most High. Because He is kind to the thankless and wicked ones.#See Mat. 5:45; Acts 14:16, 17
36“Therefore be compassionate, as your Father also is compassionate.
37“And do not judge, and you shall not be judged at all. Condemn not, and you shall not be condemned at all. Forgive, and you shall be forgiven.
38Give, and it shall be given to you. A good measure, pressed down and shaken together and running over shall be put into your lap. For with the same measure with which you measure, it shall be measured back to you.
39And He spoke a parable to them, “Is a blind able to lead a blind? Shall they not both fall into a pit?
40“A taught one is not above his teacher, but everyone perfected shall be like his teacher.
41And why do you see the splinter in your brother’s eye, but are not aware of the plank in your own eye?”
42“Or how are you able to say to your brother, ‘Brother, let me take out the splinter that is in your eye,’ not seeing the plank in your own eye? Hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you shall see clearly to take out the splinter that is in your brother’s eye.
43“For a good tree does not yield rotten fruit, nor does a rotten tree yield good fruit.
44“For each tree is known by its own fruit. For they do not gather figs from thorns, nor do they gather grapes from a bramble bush.
45“The good man brings forth what is good out of the good treasure of his heart, and the wicked man brings forth what is wicked out of the wicked treasure of his heart. For out of the overflow of the heart his mouth speaks.
46“But why do you call Me ‘Master, Master,’ and do not do what I say?#See Luke 6:47-49; Mat. 7:24-28; Luke 8:21; John 3:36; James 2:17-24
47“Everyone who is coming to Me, and is hearing My words and is doing them, I shall show you whom he is like:
48“He is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid a foundation on the rock. And when a flood came, the stream burst against that house, but was unable to shake it, for it was founded on the rock.
49But the one hearing and not doing, is like a man who built a house on the earth without a foundation, against which the stream burst, and immediately it fell. And the ruin of that house was great.
