Luke 22

Judas Becomes an Enemy of Jesus
1It was almost time for the Feast of Unleavened Bread, called the Passover Feast. 2The leading priests and teachers of the law were trying to find a way to kill Jesus, because they were afraid of the people.
3Satan entered Judas Iscariot, one of Jesus’ twelve apostles. 4Judas went to the leading priests and some of the soldiers who guarded the Temple and talked to them about a way to hand Jesus over to them. 5They were pleased and agreed to give Judas money. 6He agreed and watched for the best time to hand Jesus over to them when he was away from the crowd.
Jesus Eats the Passover Meal
7The Day of Unleavened Bread came when the Passover lambs had to be sacrificed. 8Jesus said to Peter and John, “Go and prepare the Passover meal for us to eat.”
9They asked, “Where do you want us to prepare it?” 10Jesus said to them, “After you go into the city, a man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him into the house that he enters, 11and tell the owner of the house, ‘The Teacher says: “Where is the guest room in which I may eat the Passover meal with my followers?” ’ 12Then he will show you a large, furnished room upstairs. Prepare the Passover meal there.”
13So Peter and John left and found everything as Jesus had said. And they prepared the Passover meal.
The Lord’s Supper
14When the time came, Jesus and the apostles were sitting at the table. 15He said to them, “I wanted very much to eat this Passover meal with you before I suffer. 16I will not eat another Passover meal until it is given its true meaning in the kingdom of God.”
17Then Jesus took a cup, gave thanks, and said, “Take this cup and share it among yourselves. 18I will not drink again from the fruit of the vine until God’s kingdom comes.”
19Then Jesus took some bread, gave thanks, broke it, and gave it to the apostles, saying, “This is my body, which I am giving for you. Do this to remember me.” 20In the same way, after supper, Jesus took the cup and said, “This cup is the new agreement that God makes with his people. This new agreement begins with my blood which is poured out for you.
Who Will Turn Against Jesus?
21“But one of you will turn against me, and his hand is with mine on the table. 22What God has planned for the Son of Man will happen, but how terrible it will be for that one who turns against the Son of Man.”
23Then the apostles asked each other which one of them would do that.
Be Like a Servant
24The apostles also began to argue about which one of them was the most important. 25But Jesus said to them, “The kings of the non-Jewish people rule over them, and those who have authority over others like to be called ‘friends of the people.’ 26But you must not be like that. Instead, the greatest among you should be like the youngest, and the leader should be like the servant. 27Who is more important: the one sitting at the table or the one serving? You think the one at the table is more important, but I am like a servant among you.
28“You have stayed with me through my struggles. 29Just as my Father has given me a kingdom, I also give you a kingdom 30so you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom. And you will sit on thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.
Don’t Lose Your Faith!
31“Simon, Simon, Satan has asked to test all of you as a farmer sifts his wheat. 32I have prayed that you will not lose your faith! Help your brothers be stronger when you come back to me.”
33But Peter said to Jesus, “Lord, I am ready to go with you to prison and even to die with you!”
34But Jesus said, “Peter, before the rooster crows this day, you will say three times that you don’t know me.”
Be Ready for Trouble
35Then Jesus said to the apostles, “When I sent you out without a purse, a bag, or sandals, did you need anything?”
They said, “No.”
36He said to them, “But now if you have a purse or a bag, carry that with you. If you don’t have a sword, sell your coat and buy one. 37The Scripture says, ‘He was treated like a criminal,’ and I tell you this scripture must have its full meaning. It was written about me, and it is happening now.”
38His followers said, “Look, Lord, here are two swords.”
He said to them, “That is enough.”
Jesus Prays Alone
39Jesus left the city and went to the Mount of Olives, as he often did, and his followers went with him. 40When he reached the place, he said to them, “Pray for strength against temptation.”
41Then Jesus went about a stone’s throw away from them. He kneeled down and prayed, 42“Father, if you are willing, take away this cup of suffering. But do what you want, not what I want.” 43Then an angel from heaven appeared to him to strengthen him. 44Being full of pain, Jesus prayed even harder. His sweat was like drops of blood falling to the ground. 45When he finished praying, he went to his followers and found them asleep because of their sadness. 46Jesus said to them, “Why are you sleeping? Get up and pray for strength against temptation.”
Jesus Is Arrested
47While Jesus was speaking, a crowd came up, and Judas, one of the twelve apostles, was leading them. He came close to Jesus so he could kiss him.
48But Jesus said to him, “Judas, are you using the kiss to give the Son of Man to his enemies?”
49When those who were standing around him saw what was happening, they said, “Lord, should we strike them with our swords?” 50And one of them struck the servant of the high priest and cut off his right ear.
51Jesus said, “Stop! No more of this.” Then he touched the servant’s ear and healed him.
52Those who came to arrest Jesus were the leading priests, the soldiers who guarded the Temple, and the elders. Jesus said to them, “You came out here with swords and clubs as though I were a criminal. 53I was with you every day in the Temple, and you didn’t arrest me there. But this is your time—the time when darkness rules.”
Peter Says He Doesn’t Know Jesus
54They arrested Jesus, and led him away, and brought him into the house of the high priest. Peter followed far behind them. 55After the soldiers started a fire in the middle of the courtyard and sat together, Peter sat with them. 56A servant girl saw Peter sitting there in the firelight, and looking closely at him, she said, “This man was also with him.”
57But Peter said this was not true; he said, “Woman, I don’t know him.”
58A short time later, another person saw Peter and said, “You are also one of them.”
But Peter said, “Man, I am not!”
59About an hour later, another man insisted, “Certainly this man was with him, because he is from Galilee, too.”
60But Peter said, “Man, I don’t know what you are talking about!”
At once, while Peter was still speaking, a rooster crowed. 61Then the Lord turned and looked straight at Peter. And Peter remembered what the Lord had said: “Before the rooster crows this day, you will say three times that you don’t know me.” 62Then Peter went outside and cried painfully.
The People Make Fun of Jesus
63The men who were guarding Jesus began making fun of him and beating him.
64They blindfolded him and said, “Prove that you are a prophet, and tell us who hit you.” 65They said many cruel things to Jesus.
Jesus Before the Leaders
66When day came, the council of the elders of the people, both the leading priests and the teachers of the law, came together and led Jesus to their highest court. 67They said, “If you are the Christ, tell us.”
Jesus said to them, “If I tell you, you will not believe me. 68And if I ask you, you will not answer. 69But from now on, the Son of Man will sit at the right hand of the powerful God.”
70They all said, “Then are you the Son of God?”
Jesus said to them, “You say that I am.”
71They said, “Why do we need witnesses now? We ourselves heard him say this.”

A Plot To Kill Jesus
(Matthew 26.1-5,14,16; Mark 14.1,2,10,11; John 11.45-53)
1 #
Ex 12.1-27. The Festival of Thin Bread, also called Passover, was near. 2The chief priests and the teachers of the Law of Moses were looking for a way to get rid of Jesus, because they were afraid of what the people might do. 3Then Satan entered the heart of Judas Iscariot,#22.3 Iscariot: See the note at 6.16. who was one of the twelve apostles.
4Judas went to talk with the chief priests and the officers of the temple police about how he could help them arrest Jesus. 5They were very pleased and offered to pay Judas some money. 6He agreed and started looking for a good chance to betray Jesus when the crowds were not around.
Jesus Eats with His Disciples
(Matthew 26.17-25; Mark 14.12-21; John 13.21-30)
7The day had come for the Festival of Thin Bread, and it was time to kill the Passover lambs. 8So Jesus said to Peter and John, “Go and prepare the Passover meal for us to eat.”
9But they asked, “Where do you want us to prepare it?”
10Jesus told them, “As you go into the city, you will meet a man carrying a jar of water.#22.10 a man carrying a jar of water: A male slave carrying water would probably mean that the family was rich. Follow him into the house 11and say to the owner, ‘Our teacher wants to know where he can eat the Passover meal with his disciples.’ 12The owner will take you upstairs and show you a large room ready for you to use. Prepare the meal there.”
13Peter and John left. They found everything just as Jesus had told them, and they prepared the Passover meal.
The Lord's Supper
(Matthew 26.26-30; Mark 14.22-26; 1 Corinthians 11.23-25)
14When the time came for Jesus and the apostles to eat, 15he said to them, “I have very much wanted to eat this Passover meal with you before I suffer. 16I tell you I will not eat another Passover meal until it is finally eaten in God's kingdom.”
17Jesus took a cup of wine in his hands and gave thanks to God. Then he told the apostles, “Take this wine and share it with each other. 18I tell you that I will not drink any more wine until God's kingdom comes.”
19Jesus took some bread in his hands and gave thanks for it. He broke the bread and handed it to his apostles. Then he said, “This is my body, which is given for you. Eat this as a way of remembering me!”
20 #
Jr 31.31-34. After the meal he took another cup of wine in his hands. Then he said, “This is my blood. It is poured out for you, and with it God makes his new agreement. 21#Ps 41.9. The one who will betray me is here at the table with me! 22The Son of Man will die in the way that has been decided for him, but it will be terrible for the one who betrays him!”
23Then the apostles started arguing about who would ever do such a thing.
An Argument about Greatness
24 #
Mt 18.1; Mk 9.34; Lk 9.46. The apostles got into an argument about which one of them was the greatest. 25#Mt 20.25-27; Mk 10.42-44. So Jesus told them:
Foreign kings order their people around, and powerful rulers call themselves everyone's friends.#22.25 everyone's friends: This translates a Greek word that rulers sometimes used as a title for themselves or for special friends. 26#Mt 23.11; Mk 9.35. But don't be like them. The most important one of you should be like the least important, and your leader should be like a servant. 27#Jn 13.12-15. Who do people think is the greatest, a person who is served or one who serves? Isn't it the one who is served? But I have been with you as a servant.
28You have stayed with me in all my troubles. 29So I will give you the right to rule as kings, just as my Father has given me the right to rule as a king. 30#Mt 19.28. You will eat and drink with me in my kingdom, and you will each sit on a throne to judge the twelve tribes of Israel.
Jesus' Disciples Will Be Tested
(Matthew 26.31-35; Mark 14.27-31; John 13.36-38)
31Jesus said, “Simon, listen to me! Satan has demanded the right to test each one of you, as a farmer does when he separates wheat from the husks.#22.31 separates wheat from the husks: See the note at 3.17. 32But Simon, I have prayed that your faith will be strong. And when you have come back to me, help the others.”
33Peter said, “Lord, I am ready to go with you to jail and even to die with you.”
34Jesus replied, “Peter, I tell you that before a rooster crows tomorrow morning, you will say three times that you don't know me.”
Moneybags, Traveling Bags, and Swords
35 #
Mt 10.9,10; Mk 6.8,9; Lk 9.3; 10.4. Jesus asked his disciples, “When I sent you out without a moneybag or a traveling bag or sandals, did you need anything?”
“No!” they answered.
36Jesus told them, “But now, if you have a moneybag, take it with you. Also take a traveling bag, and if you don't have a sword,#22.36 moneybag … traveling bag … sword: These were things that someone would take on a dangerous journey. Jesus was telling his disciples to be ready for anything that might happen. They seem to have understood what he meant (see 22.49-51). sell some of your clothes and buy one. 37#Is 53.12. Do this because the Scriptures say, ‘He was considered a criminal.’ This was written about me, and it will soon come true.”
38The disciples said, “Lord, here are two swords!”
“Enough of that!” Jesus replied.
Jesus Prays
(Matthew 26.36-46; Mark 14.32-42)
39Jesus went out to the Mount of Olives, as he often did, and his disciples went with him. 40When they got there, he told them, “Pray that you won't be tested.”
41Jesus walked on a little way before he knelt down and prayed, 42“Father, if you will, please don't make me suffer by drinking from this cup.#22.42 drinking from this cup: In the Scriptures “to drink from a cup” sometimes means to suffer. But do what you want, and not what I want.”
43Then an angel from heaven came to help him. 44Jesus was in great pain and prayed so sincerely that his sweat fell to the ground like drops of blood.#22.43,44 Then an angel … like drops of blood: Verses 43,44 are not in some manuscripts.
45Jesus got up from praying and went over to his disciples. They were asleep and worn out from being so sad. 46He said to them, “Why are you asleep? Wake up and pray that you won't be tested.”
Jesus Is Arrested
(Matthew 26.47-56; Mark 14.43-50; John 18.3-11)
47While Jesus was still speaking, a crowd came up. It was led by Judas, one of the twelve apostles. He went over to Jesus and greeted him with a kiss.#22.47 greeted him with a kiss: It was the custom for people to greet each other with a kiss on the cheek.
48Jesus asked Judas, “Are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss?”
49When Jesus' disciples saw what was about to happen, they asked, “Lord, should we attack them with a sword?” 50One of the disciples even struck at the high priest's servant with his sword and cut off the servant's right ear.
51“Enough of that!” Jesus said. Then he touched the servant's ear and healed it.
52Jesus spoke to the chief priests, the temple police, and the leaders who had come to arrest him. He said, “Why do you come out with swords and clubs and treat me like a criminal? 53#Lk 19.47; 21.37. I was with you every day in the temple, and you didn't arrest me. But this is your time, and darkness#22.53 darkness: Darkness stands for the power of the devil. is in control.”
Peter Says He Doesn't Know Jesus
(Matthew 26.57,58,67-75; Mark 14.53,54,66-72; John 18.12-18,25-27)
54Jesus was arrested and led away to the house of the high priest, while Peter followed at a distance. 55Some people built a fire in the middle of the courtyard and were sitting around it. Peter sat there with them, 56and a servant girl saw him. Then after she had looked at him carefully, she said, “This man was with Jesus!”
57Peter said, “Woman, I don't even know that man!”
58A little later someone else saw Peter and said, “You are one of them!”
“No, I'm not!” Peter replied.
59About an hour later another man insisted, “This man must have been with Jesus. They both come from Galilee.”
60Peter replied, “I don't know what you are talking about!” Right then, while Peter was still speaking, a rooster crowed.
61The Lord turned and looked at Peter. And Peter remembered that the Lord had said, “Before a rooster crows tomorrow morning, you will say three times that you don't know me.” 62Then Peter went out and cried bitterly.
63The men who were guarding Jesus made fun of him and beat him. 64They put a blindfold on him and said, “Tell us who struck you!” 65They kept on insulting Jesus in many other ways.
Jesus Is Questioned by the Council
(Matthew 26.59-66; Mark 14.55-64; John 18.19-24)
66At daybreak the nation's leaders, the chief priests, and the teachers of the Law of Moses got together and brought Jesus before their council. 67They said, “Tell us! Are you the Messiah?”
Jesus replied, “If I said so, you wouldn't believe me. 68And if I asked you a question, you wouldn't answer. 69But from now on, the Son of Man will be seated at the right side of God All-Powerful.”
70Then they asked, “Are you the Son of God?”#22.70 Son of God: This was one of the titles used for the kings of Israel.
Jesus answered, “You say I am!”#22.70 You say I am: Or “That's what you say.”
71They replied, “Why do we need more witnesses? He said it himself!”
