Jewish Leaders Question Jesus
1One day Jesus was in the Temple, teaching the people and telling them the Good News. The leading priests, teachers of the law, and elders came up to talk with him, 2saying, “Tell us what authority you have to do these things? Who gave you this authority?”
3Jesus answered, “I will also ask you a question. Tell me: 4When John baptized people, was that authority from God or just from other people?”
5They argued about this, saying, “If we answer, ‘John’s baptism was from God,’ Jesus will say, ‘Then why did you not believe him?’ 6But if we say, ‘It was from other people,’ all the people will stone us to death, because they believe John was a prophet.” 7So they answered that they didn’t know where it came from.
8Jesus said to them, “Then I won’t tell you what authority I have to do these things.”
A Story About God’s Son
9Then Jesus told the people this story: “A man planted a vineyard and leased it to some farmers. Then he went away for a long time. 10When it was time for the grapes to be picked, he sent a servant to the farmers to get some of the grapes. But they beat the servant and sent him away empty-handed. 11Then he sent another servant. They beat this servant also, and showed no respect for him, and sent him away empty-handed. 12So the man sent a third servant. The farmers wounded him and threw him out. 13The owner of the vineyard said, ‘What will I do now? I will send my son whom I love. Maybe they will respect him.’ 14But when the farmers saw the son, they said to each other, ‘This son will inherit the vineyard. If we kill him, it will be ours.’ 15So the farmers threw the son out of the vineyard and killed him.
“What will the owner of this vineyard do to them? 16He will come and kill those farmers and will give the vineyard to other farmers.”
When the people heard this story, they said, “Let this never happen!”
17But Jesus looked at them and said, “Then what does this verse mean:
‘The stone that the builders rejected
became the cornerstone’? #Psalm 118:22
18Everyone who falls on that stone will be broken, and the person on whom it falls, that person will be crushed!”
19The teachers of the law and the leading priests wanted to arrest Jesus at once, because they knew the story was about them. But they were afraid of what the people would do.
Is It Right to Pay Taxes or Not?
20So they watched Jesus and sent some spies who acted as if they were sincere. They wanted to trap Jesus in saying something wrong so they could hand him over to the authority and power of the governor. 21So the spies asked Jesus, “Teacher, we know that what you say and teach is true. You pay no attention to who people are, and you always teach the truth about God’s way. 22Tell us, is it right for us to pay taxes to Caesar or not?”
23But Jesus, knowing they were trying to trick him, said, 24“Show me a coin. Whose image and name are on it?”
They said, “Caesar’s.”
25Jesus said to them, “Then give to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and give to God the things that are God’s.”
26So they were not able to trap Jesus in anything he said in the presence of the people. And being amazed at his answer, they became silent.
Some Sadducees Try to Trick Jesus
27Some Sadducees, who believed people would not rise from the dead, came to Jesus. 28They asked, “Teacher, Moses wrote that if a man’s brother dies and leaves a wife but no children, then that man must marry the widow and have children for his brother. 29Once there were seven brothers. The first brother married and died, but had no children. 30Then the second brother married the widow, and he died. 31And the third brother married the widow, and he died. The same thing happened with all seven brothers; they died and had no children. 32Finally, the woman died also. 33Since all seven brothers had married her, whose wife will she be when people rise from the dead?”
34Jesus said to them, “On earth, people marry and are given to someone to marry. 35But those who will be worthy to be raised from the dead and live again will not marry, nor will they be given to someone to marry. 36In that life they are like angels and cannot die. They are children of God, because they have been raised from the dead. 37Even Moses clearly showed that the dead are raised to life. When he wrote about the burning bush, he said that the Lord is ‘the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.’ 38God is the God of the living, not the dead, because all people are alive to him.”
39Some of the teachers of the law said, “Teacher, your answer was good.” 40No one was brave enough to ask him another question.
Is the Christ the Son of David?
41Then Jesus said, “Why do people say that the Christ is the Son of David? 42In the book of Psalms, David himself says:
‘The Lord said to my Lord,
“Sit by me at my right side,
43until I put your enemies under your control.” ’#Psalm 110:1
44David calls the Christ ‘Lord,’ so how can the Christ be his son?”
Jesus Accuses Some Leaders
45While all the people were listening, Jesus said to his followers, 46“Beware of the teachers of the law. They like to walk around wearing fancy clothes, and they love for people to greet them with respect in the marketplaces. They love to have the most important seats in the synagogues and at feasts. 47But they cheat widows and steal their houses and then try to make themselves look good by saying long prayers. They will receive a greater punishment.”

A Question about Jesus' Authority
(Matthew 21.23-27; Mark 11.27-33)
1One day, Jesus was teaching in the temple and telling the good news. So the chief priests, the teachers, and the nation's leaders 2asked him, “What right do you have to do these things? Who gave you this authority?”
3Jesus replied, “I want to ask you a question. 4Who gave John the right to baptize? Was it God in heaven or merely some human being?”
5They talked this over and said to each other, “We can't say God gave John this right. Jesus will ask us why we didn't believe John. 6And we can't say it was merely some human who gave John the right to baptize. The crowd will stone us to death, because they think John was a prophet.”
7So they told Jesus, “We don't know who gave John the right to baptize.”
8Jesus replied, “Then I won't tell you who gave me the right to do what I do.”
Renters of a Vineyard
(Matthew 21.33-46; Mark 12.1-12)
9 #
Is 5.1. Jesus told the people this story:
A man once planted a vineyard and rented it out. Then he left the country for a long time. 10When it was time to harvest the crop, he sent a servant to ask the renters for his share of the grapes. But they beat up the servant and sent him away without anything. 11So the owner sent another servant. The renters also beat him up. They insulted him terribly and sent him away without a thing. 12The owner sent a third servant. He was also beaten terribly and thrown out of the vineyard.
13The owner then said to himself, “What am I going to do? I know what. I'll send my son, the one I love so much. They will surely respect him!”
14When the renters saw the owner's son, they said to one another, “Someday he will own the vineyard. Let's kill him! Then we can have it all for ourselves.” 15So they threw him out of the vineyard and killed him.
Jesus asked, “What do you think the owner of the vineyard will do? 16I'll tell you what. He will come and kill those renters and let someone else have his vineyard.”
When the people heard this, they said, “This must never happen!”

Ps 118.22. But Jesus looked straight at them and said, “Then what do the Scriptures mean when they say, ‘The stone the builders tossed aside is now the most important stone of all’? 18Anyone who stumbles over this stone will get hurt, and anyone it falls on will be smashed to pieces.”
19The chief priests and the teachers of the Law of Moses knew that Jesus was talking about them when he was telling this story. They wanted to arrest him right then, but they were afraid of the people.
Paying Taxes
(Matthew 22.15-22; Mark 12.13-17)
20Jesus' enemies kept watching him closely, because they wanted to hand him over to the Roman governor. So they sent some men who pretended to be good. But they were really spies trying to catch Jesus saying something wrong. 21The spies said to him, “Teacher, we know you teach the truth about what God wants people to do. And you treat everyone with the same respect, no matter who they are. 22Tell us, should we pay taxes to the Emperor or not?”
23Jesus knew they were trying to trick him. So he told them, 24“Show me a coin.” Then he asked, “Whose picture and name are on it?”
“The Emperor's,” they answered.
25Then he told them, “Give the Emperor what belongs to him and give God what belongs to God.” 26Jesus' enemies could not catch him saying anything wrong there in front of the people. They were amazed at his answer and kept quiet.
Life in the Future World
(Matthew 22.23-33; Mark 12.18-27)

Ac 23.8. The Sadducees did not believe that people would rise to life after death. So some of them came to Jesus 28#Dt 25.5,6. and said:
Teacher, Moses wrote that if a married man dies and has no children, his brother should marry the widow. Their first son would then be thought of as the son of the dead brother.
29There were once seven brothers. The first one married, but died without having any children. 30The second one married his brother's widow, and he also died without having any children. 31The same thing happened to the third one. Finally, all seven brothers married this woman and died without having any children. 32At last the woman died. 33When God raises people from death, whose wife will this woman be? All seven brothers had married her.
34Jesus answered:
The people in this world get married. 35But in the future world no one who is worthy to rise from death will either marry 36or die. They will be like the angels and will be God's children, because they have been raised to life.

Ex 3.6. In the story about the burning bush, Moses clearly shows that people will live again. He said, “The Lord is the God worshiped by Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.”#20.37 The Lord is the God worshiped by Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob: Jesus argues that if God is worshiped by these three, they must be alive, because he is the God of the living. 38So the Lord isn't the God of the dead, but of the living. This means that everyone is alive as far as God is concerned.
39Some of the teachers of the Law of Moses said, “Teacher, you have given a good answer!” 40From then on, no one dared to ask Jesus any questions.
About David's Son
(Matthew 22.41-46; Mark 12.35-37)
41Jesus asked, “Why do people say that the Messiah will be the son of King David?#20.41 the son of King David: See the note at 18.38. 42#Ps 110.1. In the book of Psalms, David himself says,
‘The Lord said to my Lord,
Sit at my right side#20.42 right side: The place of power and honor.
43until I make your enemies
into a footstool for you.’
44David spoke of the Messiah as his Lord, so how can the Messiah be his son?”
Jesus and the Teachers of the Law of Moses
(Matthew 23.1-36; Mark 12.38-40; Luke 11.37-54)
45While everyone was listening to Jesus, he said to his disciples:
46Guard against the teachers of the Law of Moses! They love to walk around in long robes, and they like to be greeted in the market. They want the front seats in the synagogues and the best seats at banquets. 47But they cheat widows out of their homes and then pray long prayers just to show off. These teachers will be punished most of all.
