Job 7
7
1“People have a hard task on earth,
and their days are like those of a laborer.
2They are like a slave wishing for the evening shadows,
like a laborer waiting to be paid.
3But I am given months that are empty,
and nights of misery have been given to me.
4When I lie down, I think, ‘How long until I get up?’
The night is long, and I toss until dawn.
5My body is covered with worms and scabs,
and my skin is broken and full of sores.
6“My days go by faster than a weaver’s tool,
and they come to an end without hope.
7Remember, God, that my life is only a breath.
My eyes will never see happy times again.
8Those who see me now will see me no more;
you will look for me, but I will be gone.
9As a cloud disappears and is gone,
people go to the grave and never return.
10They will never come back to their houses again,
and their places will not know them anymore.
11“So I will not stay quiet;
I will speak out in the suffering of my spirit.
I will complain because I am so unhappy.
12I am not the sea or the sea monster.
So why have you set a guard over me?
13Sometimes I think my bed will comfort me
or that my couch will stop my complaint.
14Then you frighten me with dreams
and terrify me with visions.
15My throat prefers to be choked;
my bones welcome death.
16I hate my life; I don’t want to live forever.
Leave me alone, because my days have no meaning.
17“Why do you make people so important
and give them so much attention?
18You examine them every morning
and test them every moment.
19Will you never look away from me
or leave me alone even long enough to swallow?
20If I have sinned, what have I done to you,
you watcher of humans?
Why have you made me your target?
Have I become a heavy load for you?
21Why don’t you pardon my wrongs
and forgive my sins?
I will soon lie down in the dust of death.
Then you will search for me, but I will be no more.”

Job’s Second Speech: A Response to Eliphaz
1“Does not a human being#Or a collective singular, “human beings” have hard service#Literally “hard service for a human being” on earth?
And are not his#Or a collective singular, “their” days like the days of a laborer?
2Like a slave he longs for the shadow,
and like a laborer he waits for his wages.
3So I had to inherit#Literally “I am allotted to me” months of worthlessness,
and nights of misery are apportioned to me.
4When I lie down, I say,#Hebrew “and I say” ‘When shall I rise?’
But#Hebrew “And” the night is long,
and I have my fill of tossing until dawn.
5My body is clothed with maggots and clods of dust;
my skin hardens, then#Hebrew “and” it gives way again.
6“My days are swifter than a weaver’s shuttle,
and they come to an end without hope.#Literally “with nothing hope”
7Remember that my life is a breath;
my eye will not return to see good.
8The eye of the one seeing me will not see me;
your eyes are upon me, but#Hebrew “and” I will be gone.#Literally “there is not me,” or “I am not”
9A cloud vanishes, and it goes away,
so he who goes down to Sheol will not come up.
10He does not return again to his house,
and his place does not recognize him again.
11“Even#Or “I on my part” I will not restrain my mouth;
I will speak in my spirit’s anguish;
I will complain in my inner self’s#Or “soul’s” bitterness.
12Am I the sea, or a sea monster,
that you set a guard over me?
13When I say, ‘My bed will comfort me,
and my couch#Or “bed” will ease my complaint,’
14then#Hebrew “and” you terrify me with dreams,#Or “the dreams”
and with visions you terrify#Or “dishearten,” or “frighten” me.
15So#Or “And” my inner self#Or “soul” will choose#Or “I will choose” strangling—
death more than my existence.#Literally “bones”
16I loathe my life; I would not live forever;
depart from me, for my days are a breath.
17“What is a human being that you make him great
and that you fix your mind on him,#Literally “you set on him your heart”
18so that#Hebrew “and” you visit him every morning,#Literally “for mornings,” or “at mornings”
you test him every moment?#Literally “for moments,” or “at moments”
19How long#Literally “Like what” will you not turn away from me?
Or not leave me alone until I swallow#Or “my swallowing” my spit?
20If I have sinned, what have I done to you, watcher of humanity?
Why have you made me as a target for yourself,
so that#Hebrew “and” I have become a burden to myself?#Some translations translate as “you” (e.g., ESV, NRSV, NIV, NET)
21And why do you not pardon my transgression
and take away my guilt?
For now I shall lie in the dust,
and you will seek me, but#Hebrew “and” I will be no more.”#Literally “there is not me,” or “I am not”
