Job 7
7
1“People have a hard task on earth,
and their days are like those of a laborer.
2They are like a slave wishing for the evening shadows,
like a laborer waiting to be paid.
3But I am given months that are empty,
and nights of misery have been given to me.
4When I lie down, I think, ‘How long until I get up?’
The night is long, and I toss until dawn.
5My body is covered with worms and scabs,
and my skin is broken and full of sores.
6“My days go by faster than a weaver’s tool,
and they come to an end without hope.
7Remember, God, that my life is only a breath.
My eyes will never see happy times again.
8Those who see me now will see me no more;
you will look for me, but I will be gone.
9As a cloud disappears and is gone,
people go to the grave and never return.
10They will never come back to their houses again,
and their places will not know them anymore.
11“So I will not stay quiet;
I will speak out in the suffering of my spirit.
I will complain because I am so unhappy.
12I am not the sea or the sea monster.
So why have you set a guard over me?
13Sometimes I think my bed will comfort me
or that my couch will stop my complaint.
14Then you frighten me with dreams
and terrify me with visions.
15My throat prefers to be choked;
my bones welcome death.
16I hate my life; I don’t want to live forever.
Leave me alone, because my days have no meaning.
17“Why do you make people so important
and give them so much attention?
18You examine them every morning
and test them every moment.
19Will you never look away from me
or leave me alone even long enough to swallow?
20If I have sinned, what have I done to you,
you watcher of humans?
Why have you made me your target?
Have I become a heavy load for you?
21Why don’t you pardon my wrongs
and forgive my sins?
I will soon lie down in the dust of death.
Then you will search for me, but I will be no more.”

Job 7
7
The human condition
1Isn’t slavery everyone’s condition on earth,
our days like those of a hired worker?
2Like a slave we pant for a shadow,
await our task like a hired worker.
3So I have inherited months of emptiness;
nights of toil have been measured out for me.
4If I lie down and think—When will I get up?—
night drags on,#7.4 Heb uncertain and restless thoughts fill me until dawn.
5My flesh is covered with worms and crusted earth;
my skin hardens and oozes.
6My days are swifter than a weaver’s shuttle;
they reach their end without hope.#7.6 Or thread
7Remember that my life is wind;
my eyes won’t see pleasure again.
8The eye that sees me now will no longer look on me;
your eyes will be on me, and I won’t exist.
9A cloud breaks apart and moves on—
like the one who descends to the grave#7.9 Heb Sheol and won’t rise,
10won’t return home again,
won’t be recognized in town anymore.
Job wants to be left alone
11But I won’t keep quiet;
I will speak in the adversity of my spirit,
groan in the bitterness of my life.
12Am I Sea#7.12 Heb Yam, a sea god or the Sea Monster#7.12 Heb Tannin, a sea dragon
that you place me under guard?
13If I say, “My couch will comfort me,”
my bed will diminish my murmuring.
14You scare me with dreams,
frighten me with visions.
15I would choose strangling
and death instead of my bones.
16I reject life;#7.16 Heb lacks life. I don’t want to live long;
leave me alone, for my days are empty.
A parody of Psalm 8
17What are human beings, that you exalt them,
that you take note of them,
18visit them each morning,
test them every moment?
19Why not look away from me;
let me alone until I swallow my spit?
20If I sinned, what did I do to you,
guardian of people?
Why have you made me your target
so that I’m a burden to myself?
21Why not forgive my sin,
overlook my iniquity?
Then I would lie down in the dust;
you would search hard for me,
and I would not exist.
