God used Paul to do some very special miracles. Some people took handkerchiefs and clothes that Paul had used and put them on the sick. When they did this, the sick were healed and evil spirits left them. But some people also were traveling around and making evil spirits go out of people. They tried to use the name of the Lord Jesus to force the evil spirits out. They would say, “By the same Jesus that Paul talks about, I order you to come out!” Seven sons of Sceva, a leading priest, were doing this. But one time an evil spirit said to them, “I know Jesus, and I know about Paul, but who are you?” Then the man who had the evil spirit jumped on them. Because he was so much stronger than all of them, they ran away from the house naked and hurt. All the people in Ephesus—Jews and Greeks—learned about this and were filled with fear and gave great honor to the Lord Jesus. Many of the believers began to confess openly and tell all the evil things they had done. Some of them who had used magic brought their magic books and burned them before everyone. Those books were worth about fifty thousand silver coins. So in a powerful way the word of the Lord kept spreading and growing.

No local church of Jesus Christ progresses beyond its leaders. When Paul made his farewell to the elders he had trained in the church in Ephesus in Acts 20, he presented the record of his ministry with them as an example of true spiritual leadership that faithfully built up the church. As Alistair Begg explains, the transparency, integrity, and urgency he modeled are an example to the church’s leaders today.

In this 5 day reading plan, Bible teachers, authors, and friends Jackie Hill Perry, Jasmine Holmes, and Melissa Kruger walk through Ephesians 1, examining the invaluable truths Paul’s letter holds for us today. Along the way, they’ll help us understand the riches of our inheritance as daughters of our heavenly Father, as well as what it means to walk in a manner worthy of our calling.
At its core, Acts prods us to be evangelistic. But God’s power to save a person and transform their life is God’s power, not ours. God will work through you despite your limitations. This 5-day plan continues a journey through the book of Acts, the Bible’s gripping sequel of Jesus at work in the life of his followers as he expands his kingdom to the ends of the earth. It’s a journey on what it means to be a Christian. It’s a story in which you have a role to play.
