Acts 14

Paul and Barnabas in Iconium
1In Iconium, Paul and Barnabas went as usual to the synagogue. They spoke so well that a great many Jews and Greeks believed. 2But some people who did not believe excited the others and turned them against the believers. 3Paul and Barnabas stayed in Iconium a long time and spoke bravely for the Lord. He showed that their message about his grace was true by giving them the power to work miracles and signs. 4But the city was divided. Some of the people agreed with the Jews, and others believed the apostles.
5Some who were not Jews, some Jews, and some of their rulers wanted to mistreat Paul and Barnabas and to stone them to death. 6When Paul and Barnabas learned about this, they ran away to Lystra and Derbe, cities in Lycaonia, and to the areas around those cities. 7They announced the Good News there, too.
Paul in Lystra and Derbe
8In Lystra there sat a man who had been born crippled; he had never walked. 9As this man was listening to Paul speak, Paul looked straight at him and saw that he believed God could heal him. 10So he cried out, “Stand up on your feet!” The man jumped up and began walking around. 11When the crowds saw what Paul did, they shouted in the Lycaonian language, “The gods have become like humans and have come down to us!” 12Then the people began to call Barnabas “Zeus” and Paul “Hermes,” because he was the main speaker. 13The priest in the temple of Zeus, which was near the city, brought some bulls and flowers to the city gates. He and the people wanted to offer a sacrifice to Paul and Barnabas. 14But when the apostles, Barnabas and Paul, heard about it, they tore their clothes. They ran in among the people, shouting, 15“Friends, why are you doing these things? We are only human beings like you. We are bringing you the Good News and are telling you to turn away from these worthless things and turn to the living God. He is the One who made the sky, the earth, the sea, and everything in them. 16In the past, God let all the nations do what they wanted. 17Yet he proved he is real by showing kindness, by giving you rain from heaven and crops at the right times, by giving you food and filling your hearts with joy.” 18Even with these words, they were barely able to keep the crowd from offering sacrifices to them.
19Then some evil people came from Antioch and Iconium and persuaded the people to turn against Paul. So they threw stones at him and dragged him out of town, thinking they had killed him. 20But the followers gathered around him, and he got up and went back into the town. The next day he and Barnabas left and went to the city of Derbe.
The Return to Antioch in Syria
21Paul and Barnabas told the Good News in Derbe, and many became followers. Paul and Barnabas returned to Lystra, Iconium, and Antioch, 22making the followers of Jesus stronger and helping them stay in the faith. They said, “We must suffer many things to enter God’s kingdom.” 23They chose elders for each church, by praying and fasting for a certain time. These elders had trusted the Lord, so Paul and Barnabas put them in the Lord’s care.
24Then they went through Pisidia and came to Pamphylia. 25When they had preached the message in Perga, they went down to Attalia. 26And from there they sailed away to Antioch where the believers had put them into God’s care and had sent them out to do this work. Now they had finished.
27When they arrived in Antioch, Paul and Barnabas gathered the church together. They told the church all about what God had done with them and how God had made it possible for those who were not Jewish to believe. 28And they stayed there a long time with the followers.

Paul and Barnabas in Iconium
1#Ac 18:4; 13:46At Iconium they entered the synagogue of the Jews together and so spoke that a great crowd of both Jews and Greeks believed. 2#Ac 13:50; 13:45But the unbelieving Jews stirred up the Gentiles and embittered their minds against the brothers. 3#Heb 2:4; Ac 20:32So they continued there a long time, speaking boldly for the Lord, who bore witness to His gracious word, granting signs and wonders to be done by their hands. 4#Ac 28:24; 14:14But the people of the city were divided. Some sided with the Jews, and others with the apostles. 5#Ac 14:19When an assault was planned by both Gentiles and Jews, with their leaders, to attack them and to stone them, 6#Mt 10:23; 2Ti 3:11they learned of it and fled to Lystra and Derbe, cities of Lycaonia, and to the surrounding region. 7#Ac 14:21And there they preached the gospel.
Paul and Barnabas in Lystra
8#Ac 3:2In Lystra there sat a man, crippled in his feet, who had never walked and was lame from birth. 9#Mt 9:28–29; Ac 3:4He heard Paul speaking, who looked intently at him and perceived that he had faith to be healed 10#Isa 35:6and said with a loud voice, “Stand upright on your feet.” And he jumped up and walked.
11#Ac 8:10; 28:6When the crowds saw what Paul had done, they lifted up their voices, saying in Lycaonian, “The gods have come down to us in the likeness of men!” 12#Ac 19:35Barnabas they called Zeus, and Paul they called Hermes, because he was the main speaker. 13#Da 2:46The priest of Zeus, who was in front of the city, brought bulls and garlands to the gates to offer sacrifices with the crowds.
14#Mt 26:65; Ac 14:4But when the apostles Barnabas and Paul heard this, they tore their clothes and rushed out into the crowd, crying out, 15#1Sa 12:21; Jer 14:22“Men, why are you doing this? We also are men, of like nature with you, preaching to you to turn from these vain things to the living God, who made the heaven and the earth and the sea, and everything that is in them, 16#Ac 17:30; Ps 81:12who in times past allowed all nations to walk in their own ways. 17#Dt 11:14; Job 5:10Yet He did not leave Himself without witness, for He did good and gave us rain from heaven and fruitful seasons, satisfying our hearts with food and gladness.” 18With these words they scarcely restrained the crowds from sacrificing to them.
19#Ac 13:45; 2Co 11:25Then some Jews from Antioch and Iconium came there and persuaded the crowds. They stoned Paul and dragged him out of the city, supposing he was dead. 20#Ac 14:6But as the disciples gathered around him, he rose up and went into the city. The next day he departed with Barnabas for Derbe.
The Return to Antioch in Syria
