King David was living in his palace, and the LORD had given him peace from all his enemies around him. Then David said to Nathan the prophet, “Look, I am living in a palace made of cedar wood, but the Ark of God is in a tent!” Nathan said to the king, “Go and do what you really want to do, because the LORD is with you.” But that night the LORD spoke his word to Nathan, “Go and tell my servant David, ‘This is what the LORD says: Will you build a house for me to live in? From the time I brought the Israelites out of Egypt until now I have not lived in a house. I have been moving around all this time with a tent as my home. As I have moved with the Israelites, I have never said to the tribes, whom I commanded to take care of my people Israel, “Why haven’t you built me a house of cedar?” ’ “You must tell my servant David, ‘This is what the LORD All-Powerful says: I took you from the pasture and from tending the sheep and made you leader of my people Israel. I have been with you everywhere you have gone and have defeated your enemies for you. I will make you as famous as any of the great people on the earth. Also I will choose a place for my people Israel, and I will plant them so they can live in their own homes. They will not be bothered anymore. Wicked people will no longer bother them as they have in the past when I chose judges for my people Israel. But I will give you peace from all your enemies. I also tell you that I will make your descendants kings of Israel after you. “ ‘When you die and join your ancestors, I will make one of your sons the next king, and I will set up his kingdom. He will build a house for me, and I will let his kingdom rule always. I will be his father, and he will be my son. When he sins, I will use other people to punish him. They will be my whips. I took away my love from Saul, whom I removed before you, but I will never stop loving your son.

Advent invites us to journey through the darkness to discover the light, the incarnate Word of God who "shines in the darkness" (John 1:5). This plan focuses upon the weekly themes of Advent—hope, peace, joy, and love—and serves as a guide through each week of the season. It is taken from our book, Dawn, with reflections for every day of Advent available within the Dwell Bible App.

Grow your expectation of Jesus’ arrival with this 6-day devotional. Advent is both about Jesus’ first coming in Bethlehem and his second coming, which we await. In the weeks leading up to Christmas, remember his first advent and prepare for his second by pondering both events. This reading plan is centered around the themes of preparation, anticipation, joy, and incarnation.
Advent begins four Sundays before Christmas Day. During this time, the Church universal is invited to become more intentional: 1) to look back in thankfulness for Jesus’ birth; and 2) to look forward in the hope of full restoration when He comes again. These reflections are designed to help you engage and embrace this season.
God’s rescue plan for his people has always centered on Jesus, our Immanuel – “God with us.” In this devotional, we’ll walk through Scriptures from Genesis in Revelation to explore this plan in action and be reminded of the role we get to play in it. God has gone to great lengths to be “with us,” and he is still using his people to reveal himself to the whole world today!
