Proverbs 6
6
Parental Counsel
1My son, if you have become surety for your neighbor,
Have given a pledge for a stranger,
2 If you have been snared with the words of your mouth,
Have been caught with the words of your mouth,
3Do this then, my son, and deliver yourself;
Since you have come into the hand of your neighbor,
Go, humble yourself, and importune your neighbor.
4Give no sleep to your eyes,
Nor slumber to your eyelids;
5Deliver yourself like a gazelle from the hunter’s hand
And like a bird from the hand of the fowler.
6Go to the ant, O sluggard,
Observe her ways and be wise,
7Which, having no chief,
Officer or ruler,
8Prepares her food in the summer
And gathers her provision in the harvest.
9How long will you lie down, O sluggard?
When will you arise from your sleep?
10“A little sleep, a little slumber,
A little folding of the hands to rest”—
11Your poverty will come in like a vagabond
And your need like an armed man.
12A worthless person, a wicked man,
Is the one who walks with a perverse mouth,
13Who winks with his eyes, who signals with his feet,
Who points with his fingers;
14Who with perversity in his heart continually devises evil,
Who spreads strife.
15Therefore his calamity will come suddenly;
Instantly he will be broken and there will be no healing.
16There are six things which the Lord hates,
Yes, seven which are an abomination to Him:
17Haughty eyes, a lying tongue,
And hands that shed innocent blood,
18A heart that devises wicked plans,
Feet that run rapidly to evil,
19A false witness who utters lies,
And one who spreads strife among brothers.
20My son, observe the commandment of your father
And do not forsake the teaching of your mother;
21Bind them continually on your heart;
Tie them around your neck.
22When you walk about, they will guide you;
When you sleep, they will watch over you;
And when you awake, they will talk to you.
23For the commandment is a lamp and the teaching is light;
And reproofs for discipline are the way of life
24To keep you from the evil woman,
From the smooth tongue of the adulteress.
25Do not desire her beauty in your heart,
Nor let her capture you with her eyelids.
26For on account of a harlot one is reduced to a loaf of bread,
And an adulteress hunts for the precious life.
27Can a man take fire in his bosom
And his clothes not be burned?
28Or can a man walk on hot coals
And his feet not be scorched?
29So is the one who goes in to his neighbor’s wife;
Whoever touches her will not go unpunished.
30Men do not despise a thief if he steals
To satisfy himself when he is hungry;
31But when he is found, he must repay sevenfold;
He must give all the substance of his house.
32The one who commits adultery with a woman is lacking sense;
He who would destroy himself does it.
33Wounds and disgrace he will find,
And his reproach will not be blotted out.
34For jealousy enrages a man,
And he will not spare in the day of vengeance.
35He will not accept any ransom,
Nor will he be satisfied though you give many gifts.

Warning Against Pledges
1#Pr 11:15; 17:18 My son, if you put up a security for your friend,
if you have shaken hands with a stranger,
2you are snared with the words of your mouth;
you are taken with the words of your mouth.
3Do this now, my son, and deliver yourself;
when you have come into the hand of your friend,
go and humble yourself;
plead with your friend.
4#Ps 132:4 Give no sleep to your eyes,
nor slumber to your eyelids.
5#Ps 91:3; 124:7 Deliver yourself as a doe from the hand of the hunter,
and as a bird from the hand of the fowler.
The Folly of Idleness
6#Pr 10:26; 20:4 Go to the ant, you sluggard!
Consider her ways and be wise.
7Which, having no guide,
overseer, or ruler,
8#Pr 10:5 provides her bread in the summer,
and gathers her food in the harvest.
9#Pr 24:33–34 How long will you sleep, O sluggard?
When will you arise out of your sleep?
10Yet a little sleep, a little slumber,
a little folding of the hands to sleep—
11#Pr 24:34 so will your poverty come upon you like a stalker,
and your need as an armed man.
The Wicked Man
12#Pr 4:24 A wayward person, a wicked man,
walks with a perverse mouth.
13#Ps 35:19; Pr 10:10 He winks with his eyes,
he signals with his feet,
he motions with his fingers;
14#Mic 2:1; Pr 6:18–19 perversity is in his heart,
he devises mischief continually, he sows discord.
15#2Ch 36:16; Jer 19:11 Therefore his calamity will come suddenly;
in a moment he will be broken without remedy.
16These six things the Lord hates,
yes, seven are an abomination to him:
17#Pr 12:22; Isa 1:15 a proud look,
a lying tongue,
and hands that shed innocent blood,
18#Ge 6:5; Pr 1:16 a heart that devises wicked imaginations,
feet that are swift in running to mischief,
19#Ps 27:12; Pr 6:14 a false witness who speaks lies,
and he who sows discord among brethren.
Warning Against Adultery
20#Eph 6:1 My son, keep your father’s commandment,
and do not forsake the instruction of your mother.
21#Pr 3:3 Bind them continually upon your heart,
and tie them around your neck.
22#Pr 2:11; 3:23–24 When you go, they will lead you;
when you sleep, they will keep you;
and when you awake, they will speak with you.
23#Ps 119:105; 19:8 For the commandment is a lamp, and the law is light;
and reproofs of instruction are the way of life,
24#Pr 2:16; 7:5 to keep you from the evil woman,
from the flattery of the tongue of a seductress.
25#2Ki 9:30; Mt 5:28 Do not lust after her beauty in your heart,
nor let her allure you with her eyelids.
26#Pr 29:3; 1Sa 2:36 For by means of a harlot a man is reduced to a piece of bread,
and the adulteress will prey upon his precious life.
27Can a man take fire in his bosom,
and his clothes not be burned?
28Can one walk upon hot coals,
and his feet not be burned?
29So he who goes in to his neighbor’s wife;
whoever touches her will not be innocent.
30Men do not despise a thief if he steals
to satisfy himself when he is hungry.
31But if he is found, he will restore sevenfold;
he will give all the substance of his house.
32#Pr 7:7; 7:22–23 But whoever commits adultery with a woman lacks understanding;
he who does it destroys his own soul.
33#Pr 5:9–11 A wound and dishonor will he get,
and his reproach will not be wiped away.
34#Pr 27:4; SS 8:6 For jealousy is the rage of a man;
therefore he will not spare in the day of vengeance.
35He will not regard any ransom,
nor will he rest content, though you give many gifts.
