Mark 13

Things to Come
1As He was going out of the temple, one of His disciples *said to Him, “Teacher, behold #Lit how greatwhat wonderful stones and what wonderful buildings!” 2And Jesus said to him, “Do you see these great buildings? Not one stone will be left upon another which will not be torn down.”
3As He was sitting on the Mount of Olives opposite the temple, Peter and James and John and Andrew were questioning Him privately, 4“Tell us, when will these things be, and what will be the sign when all these things are going to be fulfilled?” 5And Jesus began to say to them, “See to it that no one misleads you. 6Many will come in My name, saying, ‘I am He!’ and will mislead many. 7When you hear of wars and rumors of wars, do not be frightened; those things must take place; but that is not yet the end. 8For nation will rise up against nation, and kingdom against kingdom; there will be earthquakes in various places; there will also be famines. These things are merely the beginning of birth pangs.
9 “But be on your guard; for they will deliver you to the courts, and you will be flogged in the synagogues, and you will stand before governors and kings for My sake, as a testimony to them. 10The gospel must first be preached to all the nations. 11When they arrest you and hand you over, do not worry beforehand about what you are to say, but say whatever is given you in that hour; for it is not you who speak, but it is the Holy Spirit. 12Brother will betray brother to death, and a father his child; and children will rise up against parents and have them put to death. 13You will be hated by all because of My name, but the one who endures to the end, he will be saved.
14 “But when you see the abomination of desolation standing where it should not be (let the reader understand), then those who are in Judea must flee to the mountains. 15The one who is on the housetop must not go down, or go in to get anything out of his house; 16and the one who is in the field must not turn back to get his coat. 17But woe to those who are pregnant and to those who are nursing babies in those days! 18But pray that it may not happen in the winter. 19For those days will be a time of tribulation such as has not occurred since the beginning of the creation which God created until now, and never will. 20Unless the Lord had shortened those days, no life would have been saved; but for the sake of the elect, whom He chose, He shortened the days. 21And then if anyone says to you, ‘Behold, here is the Christ’; or, ‘Behold, He is there’; do not believe him; 22for false Christs and false prophets will arise, and will show signs and wonders, in order to lead astray, if possible, the elect. 23But take heed; behold, I have told you everything in advance.
The Return of Christ
24 “But in those days, after that tribulation, the sun will be darkened and the moon will not give its light, 25and the stars will be falling from heaven, and the powers that are in the heavens will be shaken. 26Then they will see the Son of Man coming in clouds with great power and glory. 27And then He will send forth the angels, and will gather together His elect from the four winds, from the farthest end of the earth to the farthest end of heaven.
28 “Now learn the parable from the fig tree: when its branch has already become tender and puts forth its leaves, you know that summer is near. 29Even so, you too, when you see these things happening, recognize that He is near, right at the door. 30Truly I say to you, this #Or racegeneration will not pass away until all these things take place. 31Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will not pass away. 32But of that day or hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but the Father alone.
33 “Take heed, keep on the alert; for you do not know when the appointed time will come. 34It is like a man away on a journey, who upon leaving his house and putting his slaves in charge, assigning to each one his task, also commanded the doorkeeper to stay on the alert. 35Therefore, be on the alert—for you do not know when the master of the house is coming, whether in the evening, at midnight, or when the rooster crows, or in the morning— 36in case he should come suddenly and find you asleep. 37What I say to you I say to all, ‘Be on the alert!’ ”

And what will be the sign when all these things are about to take place? ”
5Then Jesus began by telling them: “Watch out that no one deceives you. 6Many will come in My name, # Jn 10:25; 14:13 saying, ‘I am He,’ # Ex 3:14; Ps 45:8; Jn 8:24 and they will deceive # 1Jn 4:6 many. 7When you hear of wars and rumors of wars, # Jr 51:46; Dn 11:44 don’t be alarmed; # 2Th 2:2 these things must take place, # Dn 2:28-29 but the end is not yet. 8For nation will rise up against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. # Is 19:2 There will be earthquakes in various places, and famines. # Other mss add and disturbances These are the beginning # Ac 26:4 of birth pains. # Gl 4:19
Persecutions Predicted
9“But you, be on your guard! They will hand you over to sanhedrins, # Local Jewish courts or local councils # Mt 10:17 and you will be flogged # Lk 22:63; Ac 5:40; 16:19-23,37 in the synagogues. # Jms 2:2 You will stand before governors and kings # Ac 24:10-27; 25:1-12,23-27 because of Me, # Rm 8:36 as a witness # Mk 6:11; 1Tm 2:6 to them. # Php 1:12 10And the good news # Or the gospel # Mk 1:1; Php 1:5 must first be proclaimed to all nations. 11So when they arrest you and hand you over, don’t worry beforehand what you will say. For it isn’t you speaking, but the Holy Spirit. 12Then brother will betray # Jn 13:21 brother to death, # Is 19:2; Mc 7:6 and a father his child. Children will rise up against parents and put them to death. 13And you will be hated by everyone because of My name. # Mt 10:22; Lk 6:22; Jn 15:18-21 But the one who endures to the end will be delivered. # Or saved # 1Co 4:12; 2Th 1:4; 2Tm 2:12; Jms 1:12
The Great Tribulation
14“When you see the abomination that causes desolation # Dn 9:27; 11:31; 12:11 # Dn 9:27 standing where it should not” (let the reader understand # These are, most likely, Mark’s words to his readers.), “then those in Judea # Lk 1:5 must flee to the mountains! 15A man on the housetop must not come down or go in to get anything out of his house. # Lk 17:22-36 16And a man in the field must not go back to get his clothes. # Lk 19:36 17Woe # Rv 9:12 to pregnant women and nursing mothers in those days! 18Pray # Mt 5:44; Ac 12:12 it # Other mss read pray that your escape won’t happen in winter. 19For those will be days of tribulation, # 1Co 1:4 the kind that hasn’t been from the beginning # Ac 26:4 of the world, # Lit creation # Jn 1:3; Rv 3:14 which God created, until now and never will be again! 20Unless the Lord # Col 4:1; Jd 5 limited those days, # Is 60:21-22 no one would survive. # Lit days, all flesh would not survive But He limited those days because of the elect, # Mt 24:22 whom He chose. # Eph 1:4
21“Then if anyone tells you, ‘Look, here is the Messiah! # Mt 1:17; Eph 5:2 Look — there! ’ do not believe it! 22For false messiahs # Or false christs and false prophets will rise up and will perform signs and wonders # Ex 7:3; Dn 6:27; Jn 4:48; Ac 4:30; Rm 15:19; 2Th 2:9; Heb 2:4 to lead astray, if possible, the elect. 23And you must watch! I have told you everything in advance.
The Coming of the Son of Man
24“But in those days, after that tribulation: # 2Co 1:4
The sun will be darkened,
and the moon will not shed its light;
25the stars # Rv 1:16 will be falling from the sky,
and the celestial powers will be shaken. # Is 13:10; 34:4; Jl 2:10,31; 3:15
26Then they will see the Son of Man # Mk 2:10 coming # Mk 8:38; 1Th 4:16 in clouds # Dn 7:13-14 with great power # Lk 6:19 and glory. # Mk 10:37; Lk 9:32 27He will send out the angels # Mt 13:49; Ac 5:19; Rv 14:6 and gather His elect # Mt 22:14,22 from the four winds, from the end of the earth to the end of the sky. # Zch 2:6
The Parable of the Fig Tree
28“Learn # Jn 7:15 this parable # Mk 12:1 from the fig # Jn 1:48 tree: As soon as its branch becomes tender and sprouts leaves, you know that summer is near. # Rv 1:1 29In the same way, when you see these things happening, know # Or you know that He # Or it ; = summer is near — at the door! 30I assure you: # Ps 72:19; Rv 22:21 This generation will certainly not pass away until all these things take place. 31Heaven and earth # Lk 10:21 will pass away, # 2Pt 3:10 but My words will never pass away. # Ps 102:25-27; Is 40:6-8; 51:6; Mt 5:18; Lk 16:17
No One Knows the Day or Hour
32“Now concerning that day # Mt 25:13 or hour no one knows — neither the angels # Mt 13:49 in heaven nor the Son # Jn 5:19; Heb 1:2 — except the Father. # Mt 5:16; 11:27; Jn 8:42 33Watch! Be alert! # Other mss add and pray For you don’t know when the time # Lk 20:20 is coming. # Ac 1:7; 1Th 5:1-2; 1Pt 5:6 34It is like # Lk 12:35-40 a man on a journey, who left his house, gave authority to his slaves, # Mt 10:24 gave each one his work, and commanded the doorkeeper to be alert. 35Therefore be alert, # Rv 16:15 since you don’t know when the master # Col 3:22 of the house is coming — whether in the evening or at midnight or at the crowing of the rooster or early in the morning. 36Otherwise, he might come suddenly and find you sleeping. # Pr 6:4 37And what I say to you, I say to everyone: Be alert! ”
