The Crown of Thorns
1Pilate then took Jesus and scourged Him. 2And the soldiers twisted together a crown of thorns and put it on His head, and put a purple robe on Him; 3and they began to come up to Him and say, “Hail, King of the Jews!” and to give Him slaps in the face. 4Pilate came out again and *said to them, “Behold, I am bringing Him out to you so that you may know that I find no guilt in Him.” 5Jesus then came out, wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe. Pilate *said to them, “Behold, the Man!” 6So when the chief priests and the officers saw Him, they cried out saying, “Crucify, crucify!” Pilate *said to them, “Take Him yourselves and crucify Him, for I find no guilt in Him.” 7The Jews answered him, “We have a law, and by that law He ought to die because He made Himself out to be the Son of God.”
8Therefore when Pilate heard this statement, he was even more afraid; 9and he entered into the #I.e. governor’s official residencePraetorium again and *said to Jesus, “Where are You from?” But Jesus gave him no answer. 10So Pilate *said to Him, “You do not speak to me? Do You not know that I have authority to release You, and I have authority to crucify You?” 11Jesus answered, “You would have no authority over Me, unless it had been given you from above; for this reason he who delivered Me to you has the greater sin.” 12As a result of this Pilate made efforts to release Him, but the Jews cried out saying, “If you release this Man, you are no friend of Caesar; everyone who makes himself out to be a king opposes Caesar.”
13Therefore when Pilate heard these words, he brought Jesus out, and sat down on the judgment seat at a place called The Pavement, but in Hebrew, Gabbatha. 14Now it was the day of preparation for the Passover; it was about the #Perhaps 6 a.m.sixth hour. And he *said to the Jews, “Behold, your King!” 15So they cried out, “Away with Him, away with Him, crucify Him!” Pilate *said to them, “Shall I crucify your King?” The chief priests answered, “We have no king but Caesar.”
The Crucifixion
16So he then handed Him over to them to be crucified.
17They took Jesus, therefore, and He went out, bearing His own cross, to the place called the Place of a Skull, which is called in Hebrew, Golgotha. 18There they crucified Him, and with Him two other men, one on either side, and Jesus in between. 19Pilate also wrote an inscription and put it on the cross. It was written, “JESUS THE NAZARENE, THE KING OF THE JEWS.” 20Therefore many of the Jews read this inscription, for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city; and it was written in Hebrew, Latin and in Greek. 21So the chief priests of the Jews were saying to Pilate, “Do not write, ‘The King of the Jews’; but that He said, ‘I am King of the Jews.’ ” 22Pilate answered, “What I have written I have written.”
23Then the soldiers, when they had crucified Jesus, took His outer garments and made four parts, a part to every soldier and also the #Gr khiton, the garment worn next to the skintunic; now the tunic was seamless, woven in one piece. 24So they said to one another, “Let us not tear it, but cast lots for it, to decide whose it shall be”; this was to fulfill the Scripture: “They divided My outer garments among them, and for My clothing they cast lots.” 25Therefore the soldiers did these things.
But standing by the cross of Jesus were His mother, and His mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. 26When Jesus then saw His mother, and the disciple whom He loved standing nearby, He *said to His mother, “Woman, behold, your son!” 27Then He *said to the disciple, “Behold, your mother!” From that hour the disciple took her into his own household.
28After this, Jesus, knowing that all things had already been accomplished, to fulfill the Scripture, *said, “I am thirsty.” 29A jar full of sour wine was standing there; so they put a sponge full of the sour wine upon a branch of hyssop and brought it up to His mouth. 30Therefore when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, “It is finished!” And He bowed His head and gave up His spirit.
Care of the Body of Jesus
31Then the Jews, because it was the day of preparation, so that the bodies would not remain on the cross on the Sabbath (for that Sabbath was a high day), asked Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away. 32So the soldiers came, and broke the legs of the first man and of the other who was crucified with Him; 33but coming to Jesus, when they saw that He was already dead, they did not break His legs. 34But one of the soldiers pierced His side with a spear, and immediately blood and water came out. 35And he who has seen has testified, and his testimony is true; and he knows that he is telling the truth, so that you also may believe. 36For these things came to pass to fulfill the Scripture, “Not a bone of Him shall be broken.” 37And again another Scripture says, “They shall look on Him whom they pierced.”
38After these things Joseph of Arimathea, being a disciple of Jesus, but a secret one for fear of the Jews, asked Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus; and Pilate granted permission. So he came and took away His body. 39Nicodemus, who had first come to Him by night, also came, bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about a hundred pounds weight. 40So they took the body of Jesus and bound it in linen wrappings with the spices, as is the burial custom of the Jews. 41Now in the place where He was crucified there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb in which no one had yet been laid. 42Therefore because of the Jewish day of preparation, since the tomb was nearby, they laid Jesus there.

Pilate Attempts to Release Jesus
1 So then Pilate took Jesus and had him flogged.#*This verb has causative force in context; Pilate did not personally carry out the sentence 2And the soldiers wove a crown of thorns and placed it#*Here the direct object is supplied from context in the English translation on his head, and put a purple robe on him, 3and were coming up to him and saying, “Hail, king of the Jews!” and were giving him slaps in the face.
4And Pilate came outside again and said to them, “Behold, I am bringing him outside to you, so that you will know that I find no basis for an accusation against him.” 5Then Jesus came outside wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe, and he said to them, “Behold the man!” 6So when they saw him, the chief priests and the officers shouted, saying, “Crucify! Crucify!” Pilate said to them, “You take him and crucify him!#*Here the direct object is supplied from context in the English translation For I do not find a basis for an accusation against him.” 7The Jews replied to him, “We have a law, and according to the law he ought to die, because he made himself out to be the Son of God!”
8So when Pilate heard this statement, he was even more afraid, 9and he entered into the governor’s residence again and said to Jesus, “Where are you from?” But Jesus did not give him an answer. 10So Pilate said to him, “Will you not speak to me? Do you not know that I have authority to release you, and I have authority to crucify you?” 11Jesus replied to him, “You would not have any authority over me unless it was given to you from above. For this reason the one who handed me over to you has greater sin.”
12From this point on Pilate was seeking to release him, but the Jews shouted, saying, “If you release this man, you are not a friend of Caesar! Everyone who makes himself out to be a king opposes Caesar!” 13So Pilate, when he#*Here “when” is supplied as a component of the participle (“heard”) which is understood as temporal heard these words, brought Jesus outside and sat down on the judgment seat, in the place called The Stone Pavement (but Gabbatha in Aramaic). 14(Now it was the day of preparation of the Passover; it was about the sixth hour.) And he said to the Jews, “Behold your king!”
15Then those shouted, “Away with him! Away with him! Crucify him!” Pilate said to them, “Shall I crucify your king?” The chief priests replied, “We do not have a king except Caesar!” 16So then he handed him over to them in order that he could be crucified.
Jesus Is Crucified
So they took Jesus, 17and carrying for himself the cross, he went out to the place called The Place of a Skull (which is called Golgotha in Aramaic), 18where they crucified him, and with him two others, one on each side,#Literally “from here and from here” and Jesus in the middle. 19And Pilate also wrote a notice and placed it#*Here the direct object is supplied from context in the English translation on the cross, and it was written: “Jesus the Nazarene, the king of the Jews.” 20So many of the Jews read this notice, because the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city. And it was written in Aramaic, in Latin, and in Greek. 21Then the chief priests of the Jews said to Pilate, “Do not write ‘The king of the Jews,’ but, ‘He said, I am king of the Jews.’ ” 22Pilate replied, “What I have written, I have written.”
23Then the soldiers, when they had crucified Jesus, took his clothing and made four shares—for each soldier a share—and the tunic. (Now the tunic was seamless, woven from the top in a single piece.)#Literally “through the whole” 24So they said to one another, “Let us not tear it apart, but cast lots for it, to see whose it will be,” so that the scripture would be fulfilled that says,
“They divided my garments among themselves,
and for my clothing they cast lots.”#A quotation from Ps 22:18
Thus the soldiers did these things.
25Now his mother and the sister of his mother, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene were standing near the cross of Jesus. 26So Jesus, seeing his#*Literally “the”; the Greek article is used here as a possessive pronoun mother and the disciple whom he loved standing there, said to his#*Literally “the”; the Greek article is used here as a possessive pronoun mother, “Woman, behold your son!” 27Then he said to the disciple, “Behold your mother!” And from that hour the disciple took her into his own home.
Jesus Dies on the Cross
28After this, Jesus, knowing that now at last everything was completed, in order that the scripture would be fulfilled, said, “I am thirsty.” 29A jar full of sour wine was standing there, so they put a sponge full of the sour wine on a branch of hyssop and#*Here “and” is supplied because the previous participle (“put”) has been translated as a finite verb brought it#*Here the direct object is supplied from context in the English translation to his mouth. 30Then when he had received the sour wine, Jesus said, “It is completed,”#Or (traditionally) “it is finished” and bowing his#*Literally “the”; the Greek article is used here as a possessive pronoun head, he gave up his#*Literally “the”; the Greek article is used here as a possessive pronoun spirit.
31Then the Jews, because it was the day of preparation, so that the bodies would not remain on the cross on the Sabbath (for that Sabbath was an important day), asked Pilate that their legs could be broken and they could be taken away. 32So the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first and of the other who had been crucified with him. 33But when they#*Here “when” is supplied as a component of the participle (“came”) which is understood as temporal came to Jesus, after they saw he was already dead, they did not break his legs. 34But one of the soldiers pierced his side with a spear, and blood and water came out immediately. 35And the one who has seen it#*Here the direct object is supplied from context in the English translation has testified, and his testimony is true, and that person knows that he is telling the truth, so that you also may believe. 36For these things happened in order that the scripture would be fulfilled: “Not a bone of his will be broken.”#A quotation from Exod 12:46, Num 9:12, and Ps 34:20 37And again another scripture says, “They will look on the one whom they have pierced.”#A quotation from Zech 12:10
Jesus Is Buried
38And after these things, Joseph who was from Arimathea, who was a disciple of Jesus (but a secret one for fear of the Jews), asked Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus. And Pilate allowed it,#*Here the direct object is supplied from context in the English translation so he came and took away his body. 39And Nicodemus—the one who had come to him formerly at night—also came, bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes weighing about a hundred pounds.#The Greek term refers to a Roman pound, 327.45 grams (approximately 12 ounces) 40So they took the body of Jesus and wrapped it in strips of linen cloth with the fragrant spices, as is the Jews’ custom to prepare for burial. 41Now there was a garden at the place where he was crucified, and in the garden a new tomb in which no one was yet buried. 42So there, on account of the day of preparation of the Jews, because the tomb was close by, they buried Jesus.
