Judges 3:10-11

The book of Judges tells the story of Israel’s repeated cycle of turning away from God, facing the consequences, and being rescued by leaders called Judges. This reading plan highlights how God sets a standard, keeps his promises, and patiently calls his people back to him—again and again. Through it all, we see that God never gives up on his people and still desires a relationship with us today.

Gideon was appointed by God to deliver his people from enemies who plundered their land, but Gideon was full of doubt and fear. He did not consider himself a “mighty warrior” at all. Only by faith could he carry out his mission. Let his story encourage you to be a hero, too - not by your power, but by faith in a mighty God.

For all the victory and triumph in the book of Joshua, Judges paints a far more somber picture. The repetition, "Everyone did what was right in their own eyes" (Judges 17:6, 21:25) describes this dark period of Israel's history succinctly. Yet even in the midst of their rebellion, God was faithful to fulfill his covenantal promises to his people.
