The City of God

Look to the Lord

1The burden of the word of the LORD in the land of Hadrach, and Damascus shall be the rest thereof: when the eyes of man, as of all the tribes of Israel, shall be toward the LORD. 2And Hamath also shall border thereby; Tyrus, and Zidon, though it be very wise. 3And Tyrus did build herself a strong hold, and heaped up silver as the dust, and fine gold as the mire of the streets. 4Behold, the Lord will cast her out, and he will smite her power in the sea; and she shall be devoured with fire.

5Ashkelon shall see it, and fear; Gaza also shall see it, and be very sorrowful, and Ekron; for her expectation shall be ashamed; and the king shall perish from Gaza, and Ashkelon shall not be inhabited. 6And a bastard shall dwell in Ashdod, and I will cut off the pride of the Philistines. 7And I will take away his blood out of his mouth, and his abominations from between his teeth: but he that remaineth, even he, shall be for our God, and he shall be as a governor in Judah, and Ekron as a Jebusite.

8And I will encamp about mine house because of the army, because of him that passeth by, and because of him that returneth: and no oppressor shall pass through them any more: for now have I seen with mine eyes.

The King of Peace

9Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion; shout, O daughter of Jerusalem: behold, thy King cometh unto thee: he is just, and having salvation; lowly, and riding upon an ass, and upon a colt the foal of an ass. 10And I will cut off the chariot from Ephraim, and the horse from Jerusalem, and the battle bow shall be cut off: and he shall speak peace unto the heathen: and his dominion shall be from sea even to sea, and from the river even to the ends of the earth.

11As for thee also, by the blood of thy covenant I have sent forth thy prisoners out of the pit wherein is no water. 12Turn you to the strong hold, ye prisoners of hope: even to day do I declare that I will render double unto thee; 13when I have bent Judah for me, filled the bow with Ephraim, and raised up thy sons, O Zion, against thy sons, O Greece, and made thee as the sword of a mighty man. 14And the LORD shall be seen over them, and his arrow shall go forth as the lightning: and the Lord GOD shall blow the trumpet, and shall go with whirlwinds of the south.

He Will Save His People

15The LORD of hosts shall defend them; and they shall devour, and subdue with sling stones; and they shall drink, and make a noise as through wine; and they shall be filled like bowls, and as the corners of the altar. 16And the LORD their God shall save them in that day as the flock of his people: for they shall be as the stones of a crown, lifted up as an ensign upon his land. 17For how great is his goodness, and how great is his beauty! corn shall make the young men cheerful, and new wine the maids.

Judgment on Israel’s Enemies

1The oracle of the word of the Lord is against the land of Hadrach

and #See Isa. 17:1Damascus is its resting place.

For the Lord has an eye on mankind

and on all the tribes of Israel,#9:1 Or For the eye of mankind, especially of all the tribes of Israel, is toward the Lord

2 # Jer. 49:23; See 1 Kgs. 8:65 and on Hamath also, which borders on it,

# Josh. 19:28, 29; Isa. 23:1, 2 Tyre and #Josh. 19:28, 29; Isa. 23:1, 2Sidon, though #See Ezek. 28:3-5they are very wise.

3Tyre has built herself #[Josh. 19:29] a rampart

and #Ezek. 28:4, 5heaped up silver like dust,

and fine gold like the mud of the streets.

4But behold, the Lord will strip her of her possessions

and strike down #Ezek. 26:17her power on the sea,

and #Ezek. 28:18she shall be devoured by fire.

5 # See Zeph. 2:4 Ashkelon shall see it, and be afraid;

Gaza too, and shall writhe in anguish;

Ekron also, because its hopes are confounded.

The king shall perish from Gaza;

Ashkelon shall be uninhabited;

6 # [ Deut. 23:2 ] a mixed people#9:6 Or a foreign people; Hebrew a bastard shall dwell in Ashdod,

and I will cut off the pride of Philistia.

7I will take away #See Lev. 3:17its blood from its mouth,

and #[Isa. 66:17] its abominations from between its teeth;

# [ Isa. 14:1 ] it too shall be a remnant for our God;

it shall be like #ch. 12:5, 6a clan in Judah,

and Ekron shall be like the Jebusites.

8Then #[ch. 2:5] I will encamp at my house as a guard,

# ch. 7:14 so that none shall march to and fro;

# ch. 10:4; [ Isa. 60:17 ] no oppressor shall again march over them,

# [ch. 12:4 ] for now I see with my own eyes.

The Coming King of Zion

9 # See Zeph. 3:14 Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion!

Shout aloud, O daughter of Jerusalem!

righteous and having salvation is he,

# [ Matt. 11:29 ] humble and mounted on a donkey,

on a colt, the foal of a donkey.

and #See Mic. 5:10the war horse from Jerusalem;

and the battle bow shall be cut off,

and #See Mic. 5:5he shall speak peace to the nations;

and from #See Ex. 23:31the River#9:10 That is, the Euphrates to the ends of the earth.

11As for you also, because of #Ex. 24:8the blood of my covenant with you,

# Isa. 42:7; 51:14; 61:1 I will set your prisoners free from #[Gen. 37:24; Jer. 38:6]the waterless pit.

12Return to your stronghold, O #[Jer. 31:17] prisoners of hope;

today I declare that #Isa. 61:7I will restore to you double.

13For #[ch. 10:3, 4] I have bent Judah as my bow;

I have made Ephraim its arrow.

I will stir up your sons, O Zion,

against your sons, #Gen. 10:2; Ezek. 27:13O Greece,

and wield you like a warrior’s sword.

The Lord Will Save His People

14Then the Lord will appear over them,

and #See 2 Sam. 22:15his arrow will go forth like lightning;

# [ Isa. 27:13 ] the Lord God will sound the trumpet

and will march forth in #Isa. 21:1the whirlwinds #[ch. 6:6]of the south.

15The Lord of hosts #ch. 12:8; [ch. 10:5] will protect them,

and #ch. 12:6they shall devour, #[ch. 10:5] and tread down the sling stones,

and #ch. 10:7they shall drink and roar as if drunk with wine,

and be full like a bowl,

drenched #[Lev. 4:18, 25]like the corners of the altar.

16On that day the Lord their God will save them,

as #Ps. 100:3the flock of his people;

for #Isa. 62:3; [Mal. 3:17]like the jewels of a crown

they shall shine on his land.

17 # [ Isa. 62:3, 4 ] For how great is his goodness, and how great his beauty!

# [ Isa. 62:8, 9; Jer. 31:12 ] Grain shall make the young men flourish,

and new wine the young women.
