Zechariah 12
12
A Trembling City
1The burden of the word of the LORD for Israel, saith the LORD, which stretcheth forth the heavens, and layeth the foundation of the earth, and formeth the spirit of man within him.
2Behold, I will make Jerusalem a cup of trembling unto all the people round about, when they shall be in the siege both against Judah and against Jerusalem. 3And in that day will I make Jerusalem a burdensome stone for all people: all that burden themselves with it shall be cut in pieces, though all the people of the earth be gathered together against it. 4In that day, saith the LORD, I will smite every horse with astonishment, and his rider with madness: and I will open mine eyes upon the house of Judah, and will smite every horse of the people with blindness. 5And the governors of Judah shall say in their heart, The inhabitants of Jerusalem shall be my strength in the LORD of hosts their God.
6In that day will I make the governors of Judah like an hearth of fire among the wood, and like a torch of fire in a sheaf; and they shall devour all the people round about, on the right hand and on the left: and Jerusalem shall be inhabited again in her own place, even in Jerusalem. 7The LORD also shall save the tents of Judah first, that the glory of the house of David and the glory of the inhabitants of Jerusalem do not magnify themselves against Judah.
8In that day shall the LORD defend the inhabitants of Jerusalem; and he that is feeble among them at that day shall be as David; and the house of David shall be as God, as the angel of the LORD before them. 9And it shall come to pass in that day, that I will seek to destroy all the nations that come against Jerusalem.
A Day of Mourning
10And I will pour upon the house of David, and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the spirit of grace and of supplications: and they shall look upon me whom they have pierced, and they shall mourn for him, as one mourneth for his only son, and shall be in bitterness for him, as one that is in bitterness for his firstborn. 11In that day shall there be a great mourning in Jerusalem, as the mourning of Hadadrimmon in the valley of Megiddon. 12And the land shall mourn, every family apart; the family of the house of David apart, and their wives apart; the family of the house of Nathan apart, and their wives apart; 13the family of the house of Levi apart, and their wives apart; the family of Shimei apart, and their wives apart; 14all the families that remain, every family apart, and their wives apart.

The Lord Will Give Salvation

The oracle of the word of the Lord concerning Israel: Thus declares the Lord, #See Isa. 42:5who stretched out the heavens and #Isa. 48:13founded the earth and #See Isa. 42:5formed the spirit of man within him: 2“Behold, I am about to make Jerusalem #Isa. 51:17, 22, 23a cup of staggering to #[ch. 14:2] all the surrounding peoples. The siege of Jerusalem #[ch. 14:14]will also be against Judah. 3#ch. 13:1, 2, 4; 14:4, 6, 8; Isa. 2:11On that day I will make Jerusalem a heavy stone for all the peoples. #[Matt. 21:44; Luke 20:18] All who lift it will surely hurt themselves. And #[See ver. 2 above]all the nations of the earth will gather against it. 4#[See ver. 3 above] On that day, declares the Lord, #[Ps. 76:6] I will strike every horse #[Deut. 28:28]with panic, and its rider #[Deut. 28:28]with madness. But for the sake of the house of Judah I will keep my eyes open, when I strike every horse of the peoples #[Deut. 28:28]with blindness. 5Then the clans of Judah shall say to themselves, ‘The inhabitants of Jerusalem have strength through the Lord of hosts, their God.’

3 above] “On that day I will make the clans of Judah #[Jer. 5:14; Obad. 18] like a blazing pot in the midst of wood, like a flaming torch among sheaves. And #ch. 9:15they shall devour to the right and to the left all the surrounding peoples, while #ch. 2:4; 14:10, 11Jerusalem shall again be inhabited in its place, in Jerusalem.
7“And the Lord will give salvation to the tents of Judah first, that the glory of the house of David and the glory of the inhabitants of Jerusalem may not surpass that of Judah. 8#[See ver. 3 above] On that day #ch. 9:15the Lord will protect the inhabitants of Jerusalem, so that #[Isa. 60:22] the feeblest among them on that day shall be like David, and the house of David shall be like God, #[1 Sam. 29:9; 2 Sam. 14:17, 20; 19:27]like the angel of the Lord, going before them. 9#[See ver. 3 above] And on that day #[ch. 14:3]I will seek to destroy all the nations that come against Jerusalem.
Him Whom They Have Pierced
10“And #[Jer. 31:9] I will pour out on the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem a spirit of grace and #[Jer. 31:9] pleas for mercy, so that, #Cited John 19:37; [Rev. 1:7] when they look on me, on him whom they have pierced, #Jer. 50:4they shall mourn for him, #Jer. 6:26; Amos 8:10as one mourns for an only child, and weep bitterly over him, as one weeps over a firstborn. 11#[See ver. 3 above] On that day #[Acts 2:37] the mourning in Jerusalem will be as great #[2 Chr. 35:24]as the mourning for Hadad-rimmon in the plain of Megiddo. 12The land shall mourn, #[ch. 7:3] each family#12:12 Or clan; throughout verses 12–14 by itself: the family of the house of David by itself, and their wives by themselves; the family of the house of #2 Sam. 5:14; Luke 3:31Nathan by itself, and their wives by themselves; 13the family of the house of Levi by itself, and their wives by themselves; the family of #Num. 3:18the Shimeites by itself, and their wives by themselves; 14and all the families that are left, each by itself, and their wives by themselves.
